Westword lists: Top 10 Most Blatant and Alleged Song Heist

Fun read. Covers a wide variety of music, including some famous cases (Bowie vs. Vanilla Ice) and some not-so-famous (Killing Joke vs. Nirvana).

The one that I think is blatant is "Elvira" recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys, and "Searchin'" by The Coasters. "Elvira" seems like a complete rip-off,IMHO.

I always thought it was Queen that Vanilla Ice ripped off, did not realize
David Bowie was part of that song too

I went to your link:

I never thought of Ghost Busters being a ripoff soundwise of I want a New Drug

Never heard of Killing joke, but yes listening to it Come As you Are by Nirvana definitely sounds like that

Just for shits and giggles, I love that Metallica pretty much said in the album booklet for Master of Puppets that they ripped off Rush. The opening/main riff for "Tom Sawyer" is nearly identical in the heavy riff during "Welcome Home Sanitarium."

Jorge Posada, who for so long was the catcher of the New York Yankees, got to catch again. He was, as he put it repeatedly, "the emergency catcher." But on this night [9/10/11], he was also a fine catcher, catching for the New York Yankees.

Surprised the OP link didn't include Godsmack and Alice In Chains, fuck Godsmack even took the bands name from an Alice In Chains song.

Godsmack has never been shy about their love for Alice in Chains, so that's why people don't mind them too much. So in that regard, they rip them off as much as several 80's bands ripped off Black Sabbath. Or as much as Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave ripped off Led Zeppelin. Both of those connections are pretty well-known, so it's kinda' cool how this article digs a little deeper (well...except for the Vanilla Ice bit).

Lit Up by Buckcherry, the part where it goes I love the Cocaine, sounds like Rod Stewart's Hot Legs

Funny, but that same song's also known for completing ripping off the guitar riff from KISS's "Shock Me".

There's a difference between being influenced and ripping them off, Godsmack even got their name from an Alice In Chains song and Sully tries way too hard to be Layne Staley.

Sure, they rip 'em off. But they've always been forthcoming about it. I remember hearing an interview with them in 1999 (when they first "broke" on radio) and the members said "yeah, we took our name from an Alice in Chains song". I'm not a fan or trying to defend Godsmack, but at least they're honest about it. It's a hindrance to them, though. They'll probably never be as big as AIC, because they'll always seem like AIC Wannabes.

It's not like Papa Roach, who ripped off Iron Maiden's "Genghis Khan", note-for-note and try to pass it off as something original. Or Buckcherry for that matter.
