Title: Today's The Day Sammartino Won The WWWF Title
prof_plague - May 17, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
I just wanted to point out that today is a very special day in Wrestling History. Today is the day Bruno Sammatino won the WWWF title in 1963 by defeating Buddy Rogers with a bearhug. Sammartino would hold the title until January 18, 1971 when he was defeated by "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff.

Ah, very noteworthy. Reminds me that I have the Sammartino/Koloff match on my computer (very low quality, but oh well).
And a bear hug? Bah, I don't care if it was 1963, I hate the bear hug.

A lot of the matches around there are low-quality, even when it was new.
Hey-hey-hey. Don't knock a bearhug, especially if it's from someone like Sammartino.

I meant the video is low quality, not the match :D The match is just fine.

Is it true that the crowd goes silent when Koloff gets the win, or is that a myth like "Hogan slammed the 900 pound Andre the Giant."?

The audio is terrible so I cannot make out the crowd's reaction too much, but the announcer does state "you can hear a pin drop here in Madison Square Garden."

Bah! I knew you meant the video! How dare you even think that of the golden age of wrestling!

From what I've heard it's true. If you think about...the biggest top face champion ever with an either year reign, loses to the top heel, I wouldn't be surprised.
Also to note: Sammartino was also the first 2-time WWWF Champion.

I also wanted to add something else.
Sammartino beat Rodgers in 48 seconds.
Other random trivia about Sammartino:
Holds record for 211 appearances at Madison Square Garden, selling out the venue 187 times
Holds attendance record in Australia for selling out venues 21 nights in a row
Did 20 tours in Japan with over 400 matches
In December 2000, a statue was dedicated in his honor in hometown of Pizzoferrato, Italy
Now there's a champion.
