TNA News TNA News: Dusty Rhodes out as booker of TNA, committee to take over for now By Wade Keller, Torch editor May 10, 2005, 5:36 pm
Email this article
Printer friendly page Dusty Rhodes resigned as head booker of TNA today. At a meeting today with Dixie Carter, Bill Banks, Scott D'Amore, and Jeremy Borash, Rhodes was asked to be part of a writing committee. Rhodes wasn't interested. He is in good standing with the company and will remain as an on-air Director of Authority.
Rhodes was hired last year to replace Jeff Jarrett and Dutch Mantell as the TV writer. He immediately rubbed some wrestlers the wrong way when he talked about his belief that older, established, name-brand stars were more important than building young stars. He did, though, espouse promoting the X Division wrestlers better by developing their personalities. There was debate within TNA whether he managed to do that.
Kevin Nash spoke out against Rhodes's booking in a "Torch Talk" interview published six weeks ago, pointing out what he felt were flaws in his booking. Since then, Rhodes has felt he was a marked man, and like Dutch Mantell, began just going along with whatever he felt his superiors wanted. He had spoken out against the all-cage format publicly, saying it was something he was against but went with because Jerry Jarrett and Dixie Carter wanted it.
Buyrates and TV ratings during Rhodes's term as booker were not strong, with decreases in both categories.
Kevin Nash is in China filming a movie for another month, but had expressed interest in having a creative booking role with the company when he returned. There is no indication that is the plan, though. |
Give Nash the book, at least for a while. Or bring Russo back
Scrooge McSuck - May 10, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
If Nash isn't wrestling, than I wouldn't see the harm in giving him a chance. But if he remains active... didn't anyone learn from WCW's problems in late 1998 through 2000?

Sounds like a terrible. Well, looks like Nash could be up there with Flair now, holding World titles in the three biggest companies.
dynamite kido - May 10, 2005 11:49 PM (GMT)
If they bring back Russo, I'm done with it.
Nash wouldn't be that bad if he's done wrestling.
D.A.V.E. - May 11, 2005 12:04 AM (GMT)
Russo won't be back because he'll demand full creative control. On a more realistic note, Shane Douglas is skyrocketing through the ranks backstage in the company (Interviewer - Road Agent - Head of Talent Relations), it really wouldn't surprise me if he was asked to meet with the Carters and asked "What would you do", and leave a few hours later with the gig
dynamite kido - May 11, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
Well we'll get treated to TNA being booked by a committee........that should be fucking grand.
SamoaRowe - May 11, 2005 04:15 AM (GMT)
I'm not going to celebrate Dusty being gone until I see what happens on the show from here... TNA being booked by a comittee might make me want him back :P

Why is Dusty being so hated here? Where is the love? What else did he do besides try to push him son? I guess I just don't really follow TNA too well.
Scrooge McSuck - May 11, 2005 05:50 AM (GMT)
Rhodes in general or TNA Rhodes? Rhodes in General.. how much time do you have?

TNA Rhodes.
Scrooge McSuck - May 11, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
1. Why is a 60 year old fat ass having 2 hot chicks wetting their panties over him?
2. Why must he push over-the-hill wrestlers in the Main Events?
3. Why must we suffer ANOTHER go-nowhere push of Dustin Rhodes when not named "Goldust"?
SamoaRowe - May 11, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
Not to mention a pay-per-view consisting completely of cage matches.
whitemilesdavis - May 11, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Unforunately for TNA, Dusty was not the problem, and this will not help. I tell ya, they are really starting to look desperate.
dynamite kido - May 11, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
Their problem has been the same since day one. Instead of doing their best to put out the best possible product, they instead used the company to force Jarrett down everyone's throats as a star.
Congrats......you have failed.
whitemilesdavis - May 11, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
As a matter of fact, they have made JJ seem like less of a star. I have to admit, I thought he was marginally effective in WCW, but now that he has been given sole opportunity to carry a company...he just can't cut it.

Exactly. If he couldn't become a big star in WCW (You know, a company that is on cable TV and was recognized as a name in the wrestling world) what made them think that he could do it in a startup company with hardly any name value (considering the NWA has hardly any name value anymore outside of Japan) and his star power could carry it?
whitemilesdavis - May 11, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
I don't think anyone thought that outside of Jeff himself. Did you ever read those letters Jerry had written to explain why he was taking less of a role in TNA? He didn't think Jeff should be carrying it either.
Big F'N Swigg - May 11, 2005 04:49 PM (GMT)
This could be good, depending on who the committee consists of. I would hope that they would have Douglas and Raven involved. It could possibly give us several different types of storylines going on at one time.

What do you mean? JJ vs. DDP vs. Arquette was clearly a ***** match and well booked.

I generally love sarcastic humor, but please... that match is an insult to wrestling.

Jeff was booked on top from day one. I read those letters, but Jerry forgets those letters quickly as he apparently lobbied against Jeff losing the title more recently (I believe it was when Monty looked to be the next up for the title) and now it's been a constant power struggle between Carters/Dusty and the Jarrett's. So who the hell knows what's REALLY going on there.......besides stupidity.

My favourite Jarrett story is, about since months ago, he started making LOUD noises about working in Japan, either NJ or Noah, assuming his "big name" would be a selling point.
Jeff obviously hasn't left Florida

Where the hell was that reported? JeffJarrett.com??

No, the real sites. Apparantly he started bugging guys like Daniels (who are tight with New Japan) about getting work, assuming his name value and the NWA Title would get him some, and they wern't interested.
It was a while back, so I might be a little hazy, but I swaer it's legit, and not Jarrett bashing

I believe you, but that is seriously one of the most retarded things I've ever heard.
whitemilesdavis - May 12, 2005 04:02 PM (GMT)
I seem to remember him going on about how the NWA title was the real world title and he would be defending it around the world.

I'm sorrry, just....Jesus
Jarrett go crazy| QUOTE |
One TNA insider says that everything Jeff Jarrett does is with one eye on his dream of being the lead babyface in TNA some day, and being accepted and admired by fans in that role... When TNA wrestlers do radio or Internet interviews now, recordings are sent to Jeff Jarrett so he can monitor what's said about the company (and him).

What... the... fuck? That's just...
D.A.V.E. - June 13, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
I was wondering what happened to Matt Bentley and Lance Hoyt......
But as for the first part...yeah.
SamoaRowe - June 13, 2006 03:51 PM (GMT)
Jarrett will never be the top face in TNA. He can't expect to annoy fans for four years straight and then suddenly go down as a beloved legend.
D.A.V.E. - June 19, 2006 12:09 PM (GMT)
Looking at last night, hows that working out for Jarrett?
