Title: Smackdown Thoughts
Description: I never see any...
jamiegeist - May 6, 2005 08:51 AM (GMT)
Holy crap, this show FUCKIN ruled.
This thing killed RAW. It had one down point, Matt Morgan, which isn't totally offensive, just boring.
The Rey-Eddie opening is great, as I was totally into that angle last week. Eddie playing this cold maniacal heel is looking awesome. Rey is playing his role great, and I honestly believe he is no longer a "cruiserweight." He is a bonafide superstar.
Booker T vs. OJ non-title was a fine match, and I found Booker to be bearable for the first time in a long time. He hasn't seem to have the fire lately. OJ got very little offense however, which doesn't make sense in a losing effort to Booker T.
MNM v Scotty 2 Hotty & Shannon Moore was a fine tag match as well, with Scotty looking pretty impressive till he went for that retardation of a move. Even the crowd pop has pretty much died away. Moore didn't get in for much here, and disapeared quickly as well. He was looking very Hardy-ish, so maybe that had something to do with it. I love MNM's characters, and their skills look pretty good so far too. Obviously they need opponents. I think the draft will fix this one way or another.
The JBL-Cena promo was good only because I'm very into JBL's character at this point. Cena bores me to tears, but hopefully they go garbage with this I Quit match and make it somewhat entertaining.
Angle Invitational thing is really starting to bore me. I don't care about Angle putting his medals up against jobbers. It is bad enough I have to watch Morgan and Masters squash people - I dont want a real talent in the ring doing this crap. The bright side is that this Angle-Booker feud looks like it could be fun. When I first heard of it, I cringed, because of my aforementioned problems with the Book, but both of them showed a nice intensity that could translate well to the ring. Sharmell will work as a manager, but she needs to do more than look like some Compton prostitute.
Carlito v Hardcore Holly. WOOO!! Carlito lives! And beats Holly's stanky old ass. I can't believe that old codger gets decent crowd pops still. Blows my damn mind. Again, a passable match, with Carlito getting the win how he should. They even foreshadow (what a concept) to next week with Carlito announcing Big Show on the Cabana.
Cena's "Bad Bad Man". Hmmm. The video is horrible. Why it centers on some 80's thing, and tons of shooting and war-like activites is beyond me. Mini-movies are over, if they want to be treated seriously. The song on the other end, is pretty good in the verses, and kinda shitty in the chorus. I wish the chorus were better, cause I was feeling the verses a bit. Be nice to know who the hell the other performers were on the track though.
Rey vs Chavo in a streetfight was an incredible match. Star ratings ruffle feathers, but I feel this was on par with Michaels/Benjamin from Monday. Rey did some great things he never breaks out, the weapons were used inventively, and the near falls were great. When Chavo hit that face-first powerbomb out of the Tilt-a-Whirl/Head-Scissors counter, I thought it was over. MNM's involvement was great too. Chavo is exteremly underrated as a worker, and not just as a cruiser. He tells a great story in the ring.
The post match angle is what really had me wanting to log on here and share. This show was solid from beginning to end, and had a real flow and feel to it centering around Eddie/Rey. Eddie's solid turn (finally) was brilliantly done. That was the coolest mask rip I've ever done, exposing a huge chunk of Rey's face without actually showing us. A great blade by Rey as well, capped off by a frickin delayed brainbuster ON THE STEPS? Is this fuckin Mexico?! That was awesome. I want this match, BAD.
So, I guess thats my Smackdown thoughts. My new favorite show.
Big F'N Swigg - May 6, 2005 12:34 PM (GMT)
It figures my DVR wouldn't record this one. Damn O.C.
dynamite kido - May 6, 2005 01:11 PM (GMT)
Well, I would actually agree on this for once. Smackdown was WAY better this week IMO than RAW was. It was extremely entertaining with a great Rey/Chavo main event. I enjoyed pretty much every segment last night..........
Mad Dog - May 6, 2005 02:30 PM (GMT)
I didn't quite get Mysterio's attack on MNM.
jamiegeist - May 6, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
I think it was just his pent up frustration from earlier in the night, and a part of him still wanting retribution for the uncalled for beatdown after the match last week. Just showing that he wasn't taking any shit tonight.
dynamite kido - May 6, 2005 09:01 PM (GMT)
They made Rey snap.....aka a way to have the roster take Rey a bit more seriously and having it look credible in the process.
Scrooge McSuck - May 7, 2005 03:16 AM (GMT)
Instead of making Rey-Rey look like a bitch, they had him fight back. Felt very 80's NWA style, where the heels destroy a babyface, then a few weeks later, he just goes nuts even though he's beat up/injured.
dynamite kido - May 7, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
Good comparision with the 80's NWA Style Scrooge.....
I really did enjoy the character change this week for Rey. He's one of the most over people on their roster that can really bring it in the ring. It's only a good thing for Smackdown that he seems to be in line for a puch over the next few months.
whitemilesdavis - May 8, 2005 02:18 AM (GMT)
This show just solidified Eddie's greatness to me. That is how you do a heel turn. Did you hear that crowd? Dead silent. But not a bored kind of silent, an uncomfortable kind of silent. They felt like they had witnessed a murder. That was good TV.

99.9% of the crowd heat on SD is canned heat though. You can NEVER really tell how the crowds reacting as I'm sure they inflate it. But it probably did get a fairly good response live.....
prof_plague - May 8, 2005 05:42 PM (GMT)
Sure enough, I've been watching SD, but miss this one!
Carlito returns! Hooray! I'm hoping Heart Throbs get sent to SD, I would like to a good tag feud between those two teams. Screw Raw. Let them keep their make-shift tag teams and every show revolve around the Heavyweight title.
Mad Dog - May 8, 2005 06:30 PM (GMT)
So does anyone think they could actually put the WWF Title on Mysterio?

I think it could be something that works.......I just don't see it happening.
Mad Dog - May 8, 2005 09:59 PM (GMT)
I don't think he'll even get a run with the U.S. Title. They can't decide to push or bury Mysterio. That's been the last few years.
Scrooge McSuck - May 8, 2005 11:11 PM (GMT)
I like Rey, but honestly, I don't buy someone that is 5'3" and 165 pounds as a World Champion. It's not because he's not a good wrestler or because he's not over (he's both a good wrestler and quite over), but the size difference is hell in a land full of muscle head losers. Rey COULD be a fill-in Main Eventer, but never a serious contender.
dynamite kido - May 9, 2005 03:32 AM (GMT)
If people can buy Eddie as champion they should be able to buy Rey. I mean, the guy IS in the company and all.

They said the same for Benoit and Jericho.
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 04:02 AM (GMT)
That's just personal opinion. I'm not going to tell someone how to feel on another wrestler.
prof_plague - May 9, 2005 04:06 AM (GMT)
I think Rey is a good contender, but not a champ (not right now that is). But then again, that's just because now that the title is on Cena, I'd prefer it to remain on Cena for a while. Not necessarily on whether or not I want him a champ, but I'd prefer to see the title keep some honour and not change hands for sometime.
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 04:10 AM (GMT)
You do realize, Eddie held the title for 6 months, then JBL held it for 9 months? That's not being tossed around, is it, or are you basing this on ROH where Samoa Joe held it for 2 years (despite them only holding 1-2 shows a month).

I'm notr saying it was being tossed around. It could easily be tossed around. With Eddie holding it for 6 months and JBL holding it for 9 months is a good start. Not that title has lost a lot of prestige or anything, but it easily could.
Side note: As cool as I would be, not everyone can be a Samoa Joe, Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, or Bob Backlund.
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 04:18 AM (GMT)
Also, before that, Lesnar was champion for 6 months. :) So, in an estimated 21 months, the title changed hands on average 1 time every 7 months.
Not bad... :)
Edit: I know it was probably unnoticed, but how DARE you put Samoa Joe's name first?!

Yeah, and 7 months isn't that bad.
Yes, I noticed I put Joe first, but that's because you referenced him.
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 05:47 AM (GMT)
That's what I meant... since I used him as an example, you probably had his name fresher in your mind.
SamoaRowe - May 9, 2005 02:51 PM (GMT)
Eddie was not champion for six months. He held the title in later February and lost the belt in later June. It's about a four month reign. That isn't too shabby, I would've loved to see him hold it for at least six months.
prof_plague - May 9, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
February 15 to June 27.
Bah! I knew 6 months didn't sound right. That would be too good to be true.
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
Whoops, I got my dates crossed. I stand corrected. :P

It's okay, it happens to the best of us. I think you were right about Lesnar reigning for six months though (if not six, it was over 5 1/2 at the least).
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 09:20 PM (GMT)
He won the title in the middle of September of 2003, and lost it in the middle of February 2004... yeah, 5+ months sounds right.
prof_plague - May 9, 2005 09:24 PM (GMT)
I think Brock was from Sept. 18 to Feb. 15. Does that sound right?
Scrooge McSuck - May 9, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
I thought it was the 13th or 14th of September, but it's only a 5 day difference and you're probably right.

Yeah, there is some gray area since Brock won the title on an episode of Smackdown, and Smackdown isn't aired live.
