Title: MTV...
Description: Where's the Music?!

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 12:35 AM (GMT)
OK, for the last few days, I've been channel surfing a lot, and EVERY time I turn on MTV, there's no music (GASP!), and a bunch of stupid shit that makes no sense.

Where's the god damn Music?! Even VH1 doesn't even show music, except for 2 A-fuckin-M.

If you want music, you have to watch MTVhits

Mad Dog - May 3, 2005 12:40 AM (GMT)
I can actually feel myself getting dumber when MTV's on. Sad to see them dumbing down the teenagers of today with this crap.

Though there recent attempt at voting registration was hilarious as they were parading around a bunch of celebrities who are unregistered voters telling kids to vote and then feeding kids a bunch of bullshit issues.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
MTV right now... a bunch of idiots playind DODGEBALL on Road Rules or whatever.

So, what does MTV stand for now? Moronic TeleVision?

Mad Dog - May 3, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
The best part about MTV was the Dire Straights song.

And I just made myself look really old.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 12:56 AM (GMT)
And to prove how dumb MTV is, right after "Dodgeball", a commercial airs with a bunch of idiot teens who don't know when the fucking HOLOCAUST was.

God damn this generation sucks.

Mad Dog - May 3, 2005 12:58 AM (GMT)
Do they still have the 20 minute commercials on MTV?

The 1st season of Celebrity Deathmatch was the last thing I really watched on MTV. Though I watched some of their Presidential stuff to laugh at all the teeny boppers asking Kerry and Bush the most inane and retarded questions I've ever heard.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 02:10 AM (GMT)
Well, what else are you going to ask a monkey and a reject Jim Henson puppet?

MTV largely ignoring music is nothing new. It's been like that for at least six or seven years by now :( Every year their programming seems to become more and more off topic. How do shows like Jackass, Andy Dick, Tough Enough, Sunday Night Heat, or Undressed have anything to do with music? Not much of anything.

And VHI has shifted it's focus to pop culture in general, not just music. That makes the lack of videos a bit more understandable, though when VH1 does play videos, it's the same six or seven on repeat.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
Sunday Night Heat has been off MTV for quite a long time, Rowe. :P But I agree, what does PUNK'd have to do with music?

Nothing at all...........but I will say that it has been hilarious listening to Howard Stern ripping Kutcher a new asshole over the last couple days.

True, but I was discussing the past 6-7 years of MTV, not just the present.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 06:37 PM (GMT)
Didn't they leave MTV 3 years ago? That's not recent, but you get the point... MTV actually had music videos 3 years ago during the day. Not a whole lot of time, but to be honest, half of them generally suck anyway so it was no big loss.

Even if the music DOES suck, shouldn't they still be showing videos since the entire purpose of the station in 1981 was to show, ::Gasp:: music videos!

SamoaRowe - May 3, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
Music videos weren't even that common three years ago on MTV. Even their countdown show (TRL) seemed to make the videos an after-thought (only showing a portion of the video, with interuptions from teeny boppers and boys who think Limp Bizkit is the the hardest band ever).

Or call 50 Cent a lyrical genius, which causes me to smash my head on my desk over and over

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
I haven't really watched MTV in forever, but I remember a few years ago seeing TRL show entire videos back then. A few months ago I was looking for an Eminem video (Like Toy Soldiers), and they only aired about 90 seconds of a 4 1/2 minute video.

TRL has been doing that since 1999. I know this for a handful of reasons:

1) I just got cable during my freshman year in high school and I was curious to see what was on. I would typically catch TRL after school and it quickly became my favorite show to mock.

2) Only a year or two later I was hanging out with some girls who watched the show religiously.

And now since it's 2005, TRL has been in the shit stage for six years. I do have vague memories of when it was just Total Request even further back (I'd watch it sometimes at relative's houses).

IMO, Fuse is only one or two notches above MTV.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2005 09:18 PM (GMT)
I don't even get Fuse, so it's out of the question... unless I got it recently and never noticed. I won't even touch BET

The Last Free Voice - May 3, 2005 11:58 PM (GMT)
Fuse does play too much emo/pop punk stuff, but at least it plays decent stuff.

Mad Dog - May 4, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
Fuse WAS good when it was Muchmusic. It's been very downhill for them as a station since changing names.

The Last Free Voice - May 4, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
Can't say. never saw MuchMusic. But they play bands I like, so I can't really complain.

Big F'N Swigg - May 4, 2005 12:38 AM (GMT)
It's sad that you have to practically watch MTV3 to see a music video. Unless it's 7 in the morning, then you can watch Ciara and Lil' Jon videos.

I prefer Fuse, though it's following in MTV's footsteps

When did L'il John become so big? Before 6 months ago, the only L'il John I knew was in Robin Hood, and Baloo played him in the animated version.

I think that Usher song "Yeah" broke him into the big time. People really dug him yelling "yeah" and "what" and "okay."

Scrooge McSuck - May 4, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
Wasn't that Dave Chappelle making fun of Lil John? I thought John only said "what" and "ok" in very dull manners. Chappelle just made it crazy.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

OHKAAAAAAY!

WHAT?!!?

Nope, Lil Jon puts LOTS of effort into his one word contributions to that song. Believe me, I work at Best Buy so for most of last year I heard that song about 30 times a day, at work.

At last, someone understands my pain.

At least I don't hear "Toxic" 50 times a shift like I used to.

Scrooge McSuck - May 4, 2005 01:52 PM (GMT)
Let me send you that Limp Bizkit CD "Results May Vary", and you'll feel my pain.

dynamite kido - May 4, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
I used to work in a grocery store when I was in high school. Try listening to fucking easy listening your entire shift. There's only so many times you can listen to "Believe It Or Not" by Joey Scarbury before you wanna go on a maniacal rampage at work.

I guess we'll see how many of us here are old by the people that get that fucking musical reference.....

whitemilesdavis - May 4, 2005 06:11 PM (GMT)
The one that always stuck for me when I worked at Big LOts was
"...between the moon and New York City. The best that you can do, is fall in love."

I never knew what that song was, but I swore if I found out...I'd track down and kill the author.

Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) - Christopher Cross

Yes, it's from the movie Arthur and it makes me want to kill myself as it was another song I had to listen to repeatedly.

whitemilesdavis - May 4, 2005 06:26 PM (GMT)
Is Believe it Or NOT the song that goes like:

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could fell so free...

Theme to Great American Hero...right?

Yep....that's it. Honestly though, I used to watch that show all the time with my dad as a little kid. I HATE that song though.........

whitemilesdavis - May 4, 2005 06:30 PM (GMT)
I didn't watch the show much.. but that song was wretched. And someone better let Cristopher Cross know his days are numbered, unless he's aleradt dead in which case I'll dig him up, go through the Weird Science process to reanimate him...then kill him again.

You're probably going to need some Oingo Boingo to help you with that.....

Lets see if you get THAT reference....
