Title: Chris Candido Dead at 33

jamiegeist - April 29, 2005 05:40 AM (GMT)
Unbelievably, Chris Candido has passed away at the age of 33 just days removed from breaking his leg, having surgery, and working the Impact tapings in a managerial role. Early reports are of a staph infection, but that may just be rumor.

Candido has always been a great entertainer in the ring, whether in WWE, ECW, or even his recent stint in TNA. If growing up means all the good wrestlers dying off one by one, then I'm not sure I want to do it.

RIP Chris Candito. And so close to the ECW reunion shows. I really wanted a Triple Threat reunion as well.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
I'm stunned as he was at the Impact tapings and perfectly fine.

I got nothing right now.

Nearly 12 years ago now, I saw a debut vignette for a guy and his hot girlfriend, Skip And Sunny, the Body Donnas. Even then I knew it was stupid gimmick, but he looked like he was having fun with it, and I enjoyed watching Chris in the ring.

Flash forward a few years and my cousin is telling me about a small time promotion in the US called ECW, and Bodydonna Skip has returned, along with Shane Douglas and Bam Bam Bigelow. And they're pretty cool. And they're called the Triple Threat, and that's a really cool name for a faction. And he's the tag champion with Lance Storm, and they hate each other, and MAN I DUG THAT. It was such a cool angle, and it hooked me. And then the guy got his ear ripped off ad he stil showed up for work. Now that's dedication.

Flash forward a few years and we get basic cable on TV, and with it, Nitro, to go with Raw. Spring 2000, hardly the best time in WCW's pathetic history. Candido comes out as "Hard Knox", and immediatly launches into a routine about having to wrestle Drank Gotch and Carl Gracie (?) in Japan, in a shootfight. Man I loved that.

I loved Chris Candido. I loved his dedication in the ring, and how he fought to overcome his demons. And how he was given a second chance, by TNA, a compnay who's stock went up a little in my eyes when they gave him a job, where he turned around and wanted to help young talent get over.

33 Years Old. Doesn't seem fair.

Goodbye Chris Candito, may the angels treat you well

Holy crap. Unbelievable. I had no clue he was only 33. He literally could have had 15 more solid years in the business.

dynamite kido - April 29, 2005 12:43 PM (GMT)
W-O-W. I am SHOCKED. This is horrible as it finally seemed that Chris's luck had turned for the better since starting with TNA.

RIP Chris Candido

SamoaRowe - April 29, 2005 01:10 PM (GMT)
Damn, I was not expecting to wake up to this sort of news :(

R.I.P. Chris, thanks for the memories.

TehDoct0r - April 29, 2005 01:51 PM (GMT)
Staph infections are a bitch. My uncle had both his legs amputated from that stuff.

RIP Candido.

whitemilesdavis - April 29, 2005 02:06 PM (GMT)
Knowing Chris's past it's hard not to assume the worst.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2005 02:07 PM (GMT)
HOLY SHIT.

Totally out of nowhere.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2005 02:07 PM (GMT)
I wonder if Nash is freaking out because he has a similar infection.

SamoaRowe - April 29, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
It makes me think about how a few weeks ago I was talking with my old drama advisor (who is an oldschool wrestling fan) and we were discussing how Chris Candido was making a comeback and was doing extremely well on TNA.

And Kevin Nash has had so many surgeries over the years, he's probably not that scared, even if this tragedy just happened.

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2005 04:35 PM (GMT)
God Damn this is a bitch. I'm not going to pretend to be one of those overly annoying people who act like they know the person, but in 1995, he was one of the very few highspots in the midcard that can work a match above "boring" level.

SamoaRowe - April 29, 2005 05:47 PM (GMT)
I caught a Candido match on Impact last month too. It was neat because I had forgotten he was working for TNA so I marked out a bit and then he put on a good little match (I forget who his opponent was, maybe Chris Sabin) and Candido was as entertaining as ever. I was most impressed by the fact that he was working for TNA at all and looked as if he had finally kicked his bad habits.

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2005 05:55 PM (GMT)
The last Candido match I saw was against A.J. Styles (I think it was Styles) a few months ago. At least he went out in my eyes on a good performance.

dynamite kido - April 29, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
The guy sure as hell earned my respect for his passion and love for wrestling. He battled his demons and returned to the ring with the passion that he seemed to loose years ago. That to me is a consumate professional. Plus, I remember seeing this match from the IWA-MS Strong Style tournament that was a total comedy match. Now, during this match you can really see how much fun Candido was having out there and honestly even though it wasn't all about workrate or anything........it was one of the more entertaining matches I've seen in sometime. The reason why the match is so cool though is that you can really see that the guys are having a fun time putting the match on. I'm just glad that Chris was able to perform a match like that before he passed........

Yeah :(

I think it's sort of ironic that Candido was only in that Lockdown match as a replacement for Kid Kash.

I'm not trying to blame Kash in anyway, I just think it's ironic.

:(

I'm glad to say, I was wrong, and it appears it was definitely a blood clot or staph infection. Seems he really did beat his addiction. That kind of makes it even sadder that he and Tammy had just gotten their lives together and had such a bright, long future ahead of them.

prof_plague - April 29, 2005 07:13 PM (GMT)
I'm honestly surprised by how we died. I was thinking he would have died from an overdose, or from long-term use, or along those lines.

Honestly, the most I've seen from Candido is when he was a BodyDonna Skip. I haven't seen any of us TNA stuff.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
His TNA work was brilliant to be honest. I loved his roll as a mentor the Naturals. Plus his comeback match was a very good match with AJ Styles.

If I can somehowingly find those, I would like to watch them.

I wish I had been taping Impact :(

Mad Dog - April 29, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)
Impact was really weird this week as he was a huge part of the main event. They did mention his passing at the end but the last thing you basically see of him on tv is celebrating with the belts.

I was honestly moved by iMPACT ending the way it did. It was a nice touch. His team wins the belts, and he celebrates with them. The moment of silence at the end made me really sad, though.

I hate to bring this up but I'm guessing Tammy might be close behind.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2005 10:20 PM (GMT)
Depressing stuff.

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2005 10:22 PM (GMT)
I really don't want to say this, but in a time like this, people do stupid things, and Tammy might take too many pills.

Real F'n Show - April 29, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
Wow. Just wow. One Sunday you're watching him on PPV, and later that week he's passed away. RIP.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
I guess reports going around are that Sonny Siaki is taking it very well. I really hope he doesn't kill himself.

Big F'N Swigg - April 30, 2005 01:39 AM (GMT)
I just realized that Siaki is the one who almost killed Alan Funk (Kwee-wee). Interesting

I had been away from my computer since Wednesday so I didn't hear of his passing. A friend of mine informed me on Saturday at a wrestling event I was scheduled to ref on. It's still a big shock to me.

I am in college studying massage therapy. I hear all the time in several of my classes that if someone has a blood clot, not to massage them anywhere till it gets taken care of. Massage would increase blood flow and dislodge the clot into the blood stream. Course natural blood flow will send it straight to the heart where it becomes a killer. I hear about it all the time but never have heard of it till my friend told me on Saturday. My heart goes out to his family during this time.
