Description: Pronunciation

So how is Gagne pronounced?

I've heard it 3 ways -

Gag-ney

Gahn-yay

Gahn-yuh

I've always used the third one. Which one is correct?

Mad Dog - April 26, 2005 02:44 PM (GMT)
Gahn-yay I believe. Though I'm going by how people pronounce Eric Gagne's name.

dynamite kido - April 26, 2005 02:48 PM (GMT)
I always promounced it like the third one WMD.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 26, 2005 07:16 PM (GMT)
Gahn-yay, definitely

Stuttsy - April 26, 2005 07:33 PM (GMT)

AWA shows always pronounced it Gahn-yuh, so I am going by that.

Scrooge McSuck - April 26, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
Hulk Hogan pronounces it "Gahn-yah" when describing him, so I'll go with that one.

Hogan also said he slammed the 1200 lb Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania III with over 200,000 fans in attendance.

Your logic?

Gahn-yay, as it's a form of the french verb gagner, which means "to win"

prof_plague - April 29, 2005 10:17 PM (GMT)
Gag-nay.

Funny, I thought you were more of a master debater.

Well, when I go fishing, I usually work the best with little worms and hooking them on something round; so I consider myself more of a great master baiter.

But seriously, I actually am a linguistics major.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
So why would it be pronounced that way? Linguistically, I mean.

whitemilesdavis - May 1, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
Surely there's no such thing as a linguistics major...and if there is, you need a different major.

Actually, there is in grad school. It's under the umbrella of Anthropology.

Side note: The /n/ should probably nasalized.

My wife's best friend is studying to be an anthropologist, and I've considered it myself.

prof_plague - May 2, 2005 05:18 AM (GMT)
As much as I'd like to debate how meaningful (or meaningless) my major is, this doesn't seem as much ontop. I'll post something in General Discussion.
