Title: Favorite NES Games

Scrooge McSuck - April 18, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
I would've made this a poll, but that would make it more like "Which game listed was your favorite(s)". There have been hundreds of games released for the NES, so it would be hard to narrow that list down to 15. Anyway, the topic is easy to understand... what are some of your favorite games for the NES, and a brief explanation why.

Here's my list...

Super Mario Brothers 3 - Probably one of (if not the) best Mario games of all time, with a lot of improvements over the original, including some awesome new characters, backgrounds, and all around clean animation.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! - The most entertaining boxing game of all time, in my opinion. The stereotypes are fun (the wussy french, a Kaiser german, a dancing spaniard), the game is easy to play, and it's a game you can play over and over and never get tired of it.

Bump N' Jump - A racing style game where you must avoid collisions against dangerous walls and obstacles, and avoid running out of fuel. Very challenging, but fun, and has been one of my favorite games for the last 15 years.

The Goonies II - The video game sequel to the movie (which is one of my favorites), it plays like a roaming adventure game, but not RPG. Imagine a cheesy version of the Legend of Zelda, and you get the point. Very challenging too.

Legend of Zelda - One of the shortest Zelda games, but good luck finding Ganons dungeon without cheating. The son of a bitch bastard had me looking for hours one time.

Castlevania - There's a topic already about this, but just a fun (and very challenging) game.

Contra- I don't know how to describe it, since it plays like a shoot 'em up side scroller (see: TMNT 2 for style), but also has different POV fighting as well.

Honorary Mentions:
Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers (my favorite game as a kid)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: the Arcade Game
WWF Wrestlemania Challenge
Friday The 13th

Mad Dog - April 18, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)

Mega Man 1-6
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior III
Dragon Warrior IV
Tecmo Super Bowl
Double Dragon II
Crystalis
Maniac Mansion
Pro Wrestling
Castlevania
Castlevania III

My favorites have been mentioned, with one notable exception.

BLASTER MASTER.

Mad Dog - April 18, 2005 11:28 PM (GMT)
Blaster Master was a little below the all time favorites for me. It was one of those games I beat and never really came back to.

Scrooge McSuck - April 18, 2005 11:54 PM (GMT)
I've never played it, period. What was Maniac Manson about? Sounds like a game I would enjoy.

Mad Dog - April 18, 2005 11:58 PM (GMT)
It was a puzzle game mostly. That's where I got a lot of house sprites and the Drew sprite from.

Scrooge McSuck - April 19, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
Ah... no wonder why I didn't regonize some of those things.

Here's a few games that I think are quite good, and worth a download for those who havenb't played yet...

Gilligans Island (roaming timer game)
The Flintstones (either of the 2)
Ducktales

Mad Dog - April 19, 2005 12:03 AM (GMT)
I can beat Ducktales in like 30 minutes.

Scrooge McSuck - April 19, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
It's still a fun game, and animated quite nicely for the NES. I can beat plenty of games in an hour (Contra I beat today in 47 minutes), but NES isn't like current games, which seem to go on forever.

jamiegeist - April 19, 2005 08:33 PM (GMT)
Tecmo Super Bowl.

No competition.

S.T. Strickler - April 19, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Ninja Gaiden 2
Mega Man 3
Legend of Zelda
Tecmo Super Bowl
Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse

SamoaRowe - April 20, 2005 08:33 PM (GMT)
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
River City Ransom
Baseball
Kickle Cubicle
TMNT
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project
Mega Man 3
Mega Man 4
Kirby's Adventure
The Legend of Zelda

and more... that's what comes to mind now.

Scrooge McSuck - April 20, 2005 08:51 PM (GMT)
I hated the original TMNT... mainly because it's fucking unbeatable. It took me 10 years to get past Level 3 (the city one), and then I get to the Technodrome... and it's just fucking hard, even when you have those awesome weapons (people call them Scrolls, but they have another name).

SamoaRowe - April 21, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
I'm just a mark for that level in TMNT where you have to save the dam. As my girlfriend said, it's the only time where Raphael and Micheangelo are useful.

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I usually had one of them die on my in that seaweed. Donatello was the only useful turtle in that game.

The level where you're jumping from roof top to roof top is highly irritating as well as it takes forever.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 01:05 AM (GMT)
Donatello is definitely the ace in the hole, but Leonardo is much more useful than the walking dung pile in Raphael and Michaelangelo. They have a horrible reach, and their weapons are patheticly weaker. They are the sacrifical lambs for the damn dam level (which is quite easy, actually).

TMNT 2 and TMNT 3 (to an extent) blow TMNT 1 away, mainly because of the complete opposite style game play, and I've always been a mark for side scrolling arcade-style action.

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
I didn't like 3 as much. The game basically forces you to use the special attacks due to enemy build up and then you often find yourself too weak to fight the bosses.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 01:24 AM (GMT)
It's definitely a lot tougher, but not impossible to beat. I've only played the game a few times, and got as far as Tokka, who is quite difficult thanks to his special attacks. I think that's the next to last level, but I'm not too sure.

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 01:27 AM (GMT)
I beat it a long time ago. Played it recently and like I said found I was often forced to resort to special attacks which drained my life. I think I got to the 4th or 5th level before it was game over.

SamoaRowe - April 21, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
I forget what the code is exactly, but there is a special code you can enter at the beginning menu of TMNT 3 that let's you warp ahead to any level or boss in the game. I had it memorized at one point... I'll have to try and find it online somewhere.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 01:36 AM (GMT)
Probably on GameFAQs.com... just don't venture to the message boards. God damn, are there some people dumber than me in those. Is it that hard to spell words correctly like "you" or the correct versions of "to", "too", and "two"?

SamoaRowe - April 21, 2005 01:39 AM (GMT)
Here it is:

Cheat mode:
Press Up(2), Down(2), Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start at the title screen before the demonstration starts. Note: For two player mode press Up(2), Down(2), Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Select, Start. Level select, extra lives, and sound test options will now be available.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 01:41 AM (GMT)
I was surfing through my NES ROM's, and forgot all about the Double Dragon series, the games that got me into side scrolling beat 'em ups in the first place.

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 01:43 AM (GMT)
That's the Konami code.

That's the Konami code.

Oh yeah? I only knew it because this kid who lived near me shared the code with me. He was a real dumbass though because I told some other friends about the code and he got all pissed off because "it was our secret."

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 01:51 AM (GMT)
Like the codes were hard to get... (picks up Nintendo Power) Whoo! Codes!

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 02:00 AM (GMT)
That code gets you something in 9 out of 10 Konami games for NES.

Big F'N Swigg - April 21, 2005 02:10 AM (GMT)
NES Golf
Pro Wrestling
Surf N Skate
Skate or Die

There was also a Volleyball game, but I can't remember the name

Mad Dog - April 21, 2005 02:17 AM (GMT)
I used to love the original T&C Surf game. The gorilla was my favorite.

Huh. I did not know that. ::rushes to NES collection to see what else I have from Konami::

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2005 02:31 AM (GMT)
Probably the majority of your collection is Konami. I would check which ROMs I have downloaded, but there's about 80, so that would take quite a while. I don't think it works for Castlevania, though.

Mad Dog - April 24, 2005 02:50 PM (GMT)
Contra works under the same code. You get 30 lives. TMNT 2 and 3 work under the code. I don't think I ever used it for any other games.

Mad Dog - April 24, 2005 02:51 PM (GMT)
Here's a little history for you:

Scrooge McSuck - April 24, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
... I could've cheated in TMNT 3 and didn't know about it!? God Damn...

Mad Dog - April 26, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
I haven't seen a cartrige version of it since shortly after the game came out.
