Title: Pink Floyd
Description: Essential or no?

The Last Free Voice - March 29, 2005 03:42 PM (GMT)
Okay people, here comes a question that's been bugging me, Is Pink Floyd an essential band? I mean, I like Another Brick In The Wall, but outside of that, the other songs I've heard by them didn't really leave an impression (hence my inability to remember names). So, Is Pink Floyd a Must listen band?

whitemilesdavis - March 29, 2005 03:44 PM (GMT)
I would say no, unless you're into tripping.

SamoaRowe - March 29, 2005 06:15 PM (GMT)
I'm not into tripping, but I definitly consider Pink Floyd to be essential. Go listen to their albums "Animals" "Wish You Were Here" "The Final Cut" and "Dark Side of the Moon."

I'd recomend more but it's been too long since I listened to their earlier albums for me to really make a case.

I have a few songs downloaded, but never felt the urge to go out and buy their music. Comfortably Numb is an alright song, as is Wish You Were Here.

Those are both good ones.

The big thing about Pink Floyd is that their work shines as a whole (for example there is no killer track on "Animals" but as an album it is fantastic). "Comfortably Numb" is probably the best track on "The Wall" and I always did have a soft spot for "Wish You Were Here."

They certainly have some listenable songs, but overall, their sound is just to spacey for me to enjoy in large quantities.

Even if you only ever listen to one of their albums, listen to at least Dark Side of the Moon. It's fantastic! I have to admit...I've only really listened to Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, but they're great, simply put.

THEY ARE ESSENTIAL. This is also, NOT because I'm a stoner. I've enjoyed their music way before I ever dabbled in pot.

Pick up as much of their stuff as you can. Or just buy Echoes....it's a greatest hits compilation.

TehDoct0r - March 29, 2005 10:35 PM (GMT)
I personally don't like Echoes, as I think they had a whole "concept album" feel going on. I like their stuff in the context of the albums a little more.

Wish You Were Here is a fantastic stand alone song though.

They definetly have to be your bag, but I love them and think they have made some of the best music of the classic rock era. Interesting stuff.

I agree with you, but I don't know if LFV has that much dough to drop all at once to pick up all their stuff. I just figured Echoes gives him an idea of what each album is like....you know like samples.

Alas, I have some dough, but not enough for all the CD's I want to buy, so Echo's it is. Is Another Brick... on it? I like that song.

yep. But if you wanted to truly understand how Floyd is.....I would personally recommend The Wall as your first listen. Then move on to their other stuff......Darkside I would check out after The Wall though.

Right. From what I've read they were kinda nuts? Or stoned all the time? And lots of concept albums?

dynamite kido - March 30, 2005 01:52 AM (GMT)
True, but if you do get Darkside of the Moon....play it over the Wizard of Oz. It's pretty cool.....

The Last Free Voice - March 30, 2005 01:59 AM (GMT)
I thought that was just an urban legend...

Werd. That's quite true.

The Wizard of Oz thing freaked me out the first time I experienced it. You have to get it exactly right to have the full effect. Every cd and cd player have a little different loading time, but my works right if you hit play right as the MGM lion roars for the second time in the beginning. If you like ganja, definetly do this a bowl or so in.

What he said.....

I've still been meaning to set up Dark Side of the Moon with Wizard of Oz...

...so the second MGM lion roar, eh? Looks like I now have evening plans ;)
