Title: Beyond The Mat
Description: 5 Years Later

Today is the Five Year Anniversary of the theatrical release of "Beyond The Mat." So, I was just wondering, what does everyone think about the documentary? And has anything really changed since 2000 (or 1999 when the film was made)? Besides the obvious: WWF becomes WWE and WWF buys out WCW and ECW.

Jake Roberts looks even worse, Mick Foley is retired, and Terry Funk is still kicking despite "retiring" three or four times since then.

He claims his match on January 29 was his last match and his official retirement. In some ways I doubt him, but he is 61 now. I think he'll still do appearances and the occassional match though.

I love the movie. I think it is probably the best insider documentary ever made, just above Wrestling With Shadows.

What has changed since the filming? Everything really. Wrestling has gone from top of the entertainment heap to crap that noone watches. A documentary made right now would be much less interesting. There aren't people who elicit such a strong response from the fans, and modern wrestlers don't seem to have the passion of the guys on that movie.

I still can't remember if I saw that. I think I did, but a long time ago.

Business has gone waaaaaaay down since the movie.

Rock is no longer in the WWE and is a movie star.

Foley retired.

Funk retired and came back a few times.

Jake the Snake continued to abuse drugs and be a bad father.

Bret Hart retired.

Foley returned for a couple of matches.

Michael Modest still doesn't have a WWE contract.

There was a guy who seemed poised to make it big 5-6 years ago, but I gotta say, what I've seen from him lately sucks.

Honestly, Beyond the Mat is the only time I've ever seen him wrestler (I think... unless I'm forgetting some). He looked really good in the movie, it's a shame to hear he's past his prime.

I just hope he still doesn't live in that shit apartment above that training facility anymore.

Have you ever seen any of his NOAH work? It's pretty blah.

A little here and there, along with his American indy work, and of course, MLW. I don't know if he got injured or what, but he is just no fun to watch.
