RING OF HONOR LOSES TOP DRAWING VENUE AFTER ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY'S REXPLEX SHUTS DOWN OPERATIONS
by Mike Johnson @ 6:00:00 AM on 3/6/2005

The Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey has shut down operations, forcing Ring of Honor to have to find a new venue to replace their top drawing market including a scheduled 4/2 event which was set to feature a "Top of American Super Junior tournament" in conjunction with the Inoki Dojo.

When contacted via email as to why the venue was closed on Saturday during its scheduled operating hours, Diego Benitez, a representative for the Rexplex responded, "Unfortunately we had some financial problems and the court decided to close us down. We might open a new one on a different location in a couple of months. We apologize for any inconvenience this may (sic) caused." A followup with Benitez confirmed that all future dates in the venue, including the ROH event, were off.

As of yesterday, no one from the Rexplex had notified ROH management of the situation.

Ring of Honor debuted in the Rexplex in July 2003 with their Death Before Dishonor event, drawing around 1,000 fans. The venue became the promotion's hottest market, peaking in March 2003 with 1,700 fans in attendance for an event the day before Wrestlemania XX. The promotion had dates set with the venue until the end of 2005, but will now need to find a replacement venue for those dates.

PWInsider.com has sent Ring of Honor management a request for comment on the situation and will update once we receive word back from ROH's braintrust.

RING OF HONOR OWNER COMMENTS ON REXPLEX SITUATION
by Mike Johnson @ 1:30:00 PM on 3/6/2005

Ring of Honor owner Cary Silkin posted the following message on ROH's message board in regard to the PWInsider.com report of the Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey shutting down without notice:

In regards to the situation involving the April 2 ROH show at the Rexplex in Elizabeth just for the record we still have not been contacted about the status of the building in any way.

The bottom line is Ring of Honor will have a show on April 2 in and will have it as close to the Elizabeth area as possible. All tickets will be valid for the show and if you would not be able to attend an alternate location and have tickets you can get a refund.

We will keep you posted on the situation. See ya at the shows,

Cary

I guess 2005 just hasn't been RoH's year so far.

2004 was pretty rough too, if I remember correctly.

Funny thing is the last ROH I went to was At Our Best at the Rexplex last March........there was about 1200 at the show. At this last show in Philly......they were mentioning that the attendance was around the 600 mark.

The Last Dayton show was a near sellout. I'd easily say around 700+ The empty seats equaled around maybe a dozen.

That's a true bummer.

This is not as bad as the whole RF ordeal from last year though. They can find other places to perform.
