To go along with my UFC downloads I got some old school WWF. I've seen several of these matches before but I'm still excited to watch them Here's what I'll be watching over the next few days:
1988 Royal Rumble
1989 Royal Rumble
1994 Royal Rumble
1996 Royal Rumble
Texas Tornado vs. Mr. Perfect - Perfect wins the IC Title back
Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect - Summerslam
Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair - right before Flair wins his first WWF Title
Shawn Michaels vs. Jeff Jarrett - In Your House 2
Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel - one of Diesel's last WWF matches
Ultimate Warrior vs. Undertaker - Rampage 91 tape
Ultimate Warrior vs. Andre the Giant
Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage - Main Event from 88/89
The Bret Hart/Mr. Perfect match is such a different experience knowing how fucked up Perfect's back was. I wonder how many painkillers he took for this match.
I love that match. Still one of my top 10 matches of all time. I remember so much about that match. But I still don't know what the hell Coach was doing there.
"Coach" was a replacement manager for Bobby Heenan, who had retired due to the strain on his long-injured back and neck, and to transition completely to broadcasting.
However... when Ric Flair was signed, Flair couldn't show up on WWF TV the moment he was signed, so they paired Heenan with Flair temporarily until a replacement was found and to promote him, since Bobby was at the time, the #1 manager in the WWF before retiring from it. One notable managerial appearence of Heenan for Flair was an MSG match vs. Roddy Piper in October '91. Shortly after, ironically enough, Curt Hennig, the man who had a manager replacement for Heenan, replaces Heenan himself to be Flairs "exuective Consultant."
Right. But why the hell was his name "Coach". And why didn't he do anything.
He blew a whistle... and that's basically it. His name was Coach because he...uh.. coached Mr. Perfect?
OK I got nothing here. (sucks lollipop)
