Gino and The Brain - March 10, 2010 10:37 AM (GMT)
I'm gonna do my first ever review by reviewing all the big title matches from the Greatest Superstars of Wrestlemania DVD that went on sale at Wal-Mart a while back. There won't be any match ratings in this review, but you will get my opinions. So, here we go.
Wrestlemania 7
WWF Championship match!
Sgt. Slaughter © vs. Hulk Hogan
This match was the main event from Wrestlemania 7, which was given the tagline, "Superstars & Stripes forever". It was an American Patriotism-themed Wrestlemania PPV for the WWF, and the Main Event build up was done perfectly. Hulk Hogan was the All-American Hero challenging the American Traitor, Sgt. Slaughter. for the WWF Title. It was noted from the champion, Slaughter that he was "playing with a whole new set of rules". The match begins with Hogan on the offense, and proving that he was gonna do anything in his power to walk away with the gold. Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, & Regis Philphin did a great job of calling the match, as the action went on. General Adnan tried to interfere, but Hogan would have none of it, and made sure that he wouldn't get in his way. Hogan tried attacking from the top turnbuckle, but Slaughter and Adnan always turned the table. Slaughter tries various illegal tactics to try and get himself DQ'ed, but luckily for everyone else, the referee allowed alot of leeway. Slaughter tries to win with a boston crabs, but Hogan will never give up. It's not in his vocabulary. Multiple near falls ensue from both sides, but the match continues on, because both men are determined to walk away victorious. Near the end of the match, Slaughter whacks Hogan in the head with a steel chair, and Hogan is now busted wide open. As Sarge puts Hogan in the Camel Clutch, Heenan says, "Well, you better call the best surgeons that L.A. has to offer, because this man's finished, right now". But, Hogan is far from finished. With the power of Hulkamanaia empowering him, Hogan finally fights his way out of the clutch, only to get floored by getting run into the corner. Sarge drapes the Iraqui flag over Hogan, and covers him. But, only gets a two count. Hogan is now hulking up. His face is bloodied from the chairshot from the champion. Hogan finally fires back with three punches, fires Sarge into the ropes, big boot, and then, the legdrop off the ropes, and Hogan pins Sarge to regain the title for the third time in his career. A first time ever, back then. Hogan celebrates his title victory with old glory, as the PPV goes off the air.
My opinion:I love this match. Total nostalgia for me everytime I watch this match. Awesome.
Winner:and NEW WWF Champion, Hulk Hogan!
Ok, I'll get to the next match tomorrow. In the meantime, feedback is welcome.

Wrestlemania 21
World Heavyweight Championship match!
Triple H © vs. Batista
Before this match began, Motorhead ushered HHH to the ring with Ric Flair at his side. They played Hunter's theme, as usual. Batista is still pretty over, and the fans are fully still behind him. The match is on. HHH tries to match power with his challenger in the early going of the match. But later, he decides to match skill with him, and is succeeding in that department. Flair interferes on several different occassions to help HHH retain his title. This match was a fight all the way with HHH dictating most of the pace. They take their fight to the outside where HHH and Flair do some more cheating to try and put Batista away. Later on in the match, as HHH tries to punish Batista some more, Batista slingshots Hunter into the steel post, and HHH is now busted wide open. He is bleeding like crazy. Batista then proceeds to beat and bash the unholy hell out of HHH, both in and out of the ring. Ric Flair still tries to intervene, but still fails. HHH nails Batista in the head with his title belt, and tries to finish him off with the dreaded pedigree. But, Batista powers his way out of it. Later on, Batista lays out the bloody champion, and then, he floors him with the Batista Bomb. He covers and gets the title victory. As Batista celebrates his title victory, a bloody HHH is carried out by Ric Flair, as Batista's star has been made at Wrestlemania.
I liked this match, because it made Batista look so badass on wrestling's grandest stage, and it solidified his main event status.
Winner:and NEW World Heavyweight Champion, Dave Batista!

These are fun. I like how they're coming from a mark-ish point of view, or pure fandom. Stuff like "Batista's star has been made" or "the power of Hulkamania empowering him" just makes it enjoyable.

Wrestlemania 10
WWF Championship match!
Yokozuna © vs. Bret Hart
This match was the second of two WWF Title matches on this given evening, and it was the main event of Wrestlemania 10. Both champion and challenger wrestled a match prior to this bout, earlier in the event. Yokozuna retained his title earlier against Lex Luger, and Bret Hart lost to his brother, Owen Hart. It seemed that the champion still had enough physical advantage over the challenger, as Bret injured his knee against Owen, and Yokozuna was all too quick to make good of an opprotunity. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was the special guest referee for this match, as Piper returned after a 2 year absence. Jim Cornette tried to interfere by pulling Piper out of the ring during a count. But, Piper decked him, and let the match continue. Bret was still the underdog in this match, because of his condition. But, The Hitman still wouldn't give up. He won't say die, as Madison Square Garden is firmly behind the challenger. Several near falls were made, but still couldn't determine a winner, yet. Bret Hart continued to fight the overwhelming odds, as the size and mass of Yokozuna proved to be a still advantage over the title contender. Near the end of the match, Bret goes for a high risk move, but Yoko catches him, and floors him with a belly to belly suplex. Yokozuna signals that it's time to end it, as he drags a beaten down Bret Hart over to the corner for the Banzai Drop. Yokozuna goes upstairs, and just as it seemed like it was all over for The Hitman, Bret moved out of the way as Yokozuna lost his balance and fell off the turnbuckle, and crashed down onto the canvas. Bret then moved in for the kill by covering the champion, and Piper counts to three, and awards the match and the title to The Hitman. Fireworks and cheers fill MSG as a battle-torn Bret Hart celebrates his title victory with several WWF Superstars who fill up the ring, and hoist Bret up, and the celebration continues, whereas Bret Hart blasts the WWF off into the next decade as the new champion.
I loved this match, as well. One of my all-time favorite Bret Hart matches, as Bret put alot of workrate into this one. Bret became a sure-fire legend after this one.
Winner:and NEW WWF Champion, Bret "The Hitman" Hart!

Wrestlemania 21
WWE Championship match!
Bradshaw © vs. John Cena
This match was known as Cena's coming out party, as well as Bradshaw's swansong as a world champ. Bradshaw comes out to a motorcade entrance, and Cena is definately the crowd favorite. The match begins, and the match in a nutshell was a seesaw match with both men getting a good amount of offense and defense. Bradshaw tries to put Cena away early several times, but the challenger refuses to go down very easily. Bradshaw uses various wear down and rest holds, taking pages out of Orton's playbook, to wear Cena down. But, Cena continues to fight back. Near the closing moments of the match, we see Cena go, "you can't see me", and then we see the 5-knuckle shuffle. But, Bradshaw mounts a little comeback, and goes for the clothesline from hell. But, Cena ducks it, and hoists Bradshaw up on his shoulders for the F-U. Bradshaw is down and out, as Cena covers him, and the ref counts to three. John Cena wins the title, and celebrates his win with the WWE Universe, as the Cena era has begun.
I loved this match, simply because it permenantly ended Bradshaw's abortion of a main event push.
Winner:and NEW WWE Champion, John Cena!

Wrestlemania 22
World Heavyweight Championship - triple threat match!
Kurt Angle © vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton
Call it what you want. Triple Threat. 3-way dance. 3 men, 1 goal. The World Heavyweight Title. The underdog, Rey Mysterio was billed as the heavy favorite. He dedicated this match to his late friend and Hall of Famer, Eddie Guerrero, who died tragically on November 13th, 2005 of heart failure. With all the stakes up for grabs, all 3 men took each other to the limit to become World Champion. Rey wants to fullfill his dream, and do it for Eddie. Orton wants it, because he feels it is his destiney. Angle wants to retain his title, and override what happened at Wrestlemania 19 with himself and Brock Lesnar. Rey uses all of the high-flying moves in his arsenal, Orton uses his ground attack, and tries breaking every single rule in the book, while Angle uses his mat wrestling skill to try and retain his title on the grandest stage. Near falls happen several times by everyone, and this match was real close. But, in the end, it was Rey Mysterio getting the win with the 619 and the West Coast Pop on Rany Orton, and Rey pinned Orton to win the gold. Alot of people were somewhat suprised that the champion didn't get pinned, like tradition went along. But nonetheless, Rey Mysterio celebrates his title victory with his fans and along with the Guerrero Family, as they continue to pay tribute to the late Eddie Guerrero.
I pretty much knew that Rey was gonna win, seeing how everything was booked. But, I guess was decent.
Winner:and NEW World Heavyweight Champion, Rey Mysterio!

Wrestlemania 18
Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship match!
Chris Jericho © vs. Triple H
This match was billed up as one nearly a year in the making, as HHH tore his quad during a tag team match. An injury that put him on the shelf for nearly a year. HHH had surgery, and fought back in order to come back in January of 2002, and win that year's Royal Rumble to earn a title shot at Wrestlemania 18. Chris Jericho became the very first Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion after beating both The Rock and Steve Austin in the same night to finally unify both the WWF & WCW World Titles together. HHH had just split away from his wife, Stephanie in a wedding vow ceremony gone bad. Stephanie then alligned herself with Jericho against HHH on the way towards the grand stage. When the match began, Jericho went straight for Hunter's leg with several submission holds, including the figure four around the ringpost, and even the Walls of Jericho. Their fight went both in and out of the ring, and even busted up one of the announce tables at ringside. HHH still refused to give up despite being in unbelievable pain. Near the end of the match, Stephanie got pedigreed by HHH for interjecting herself into the match. Jericho tried to pedigree Hunter, but got slingshotted into the turnbuckle, where jumped off, and landed right into a kick from HHH, and then, he got pedigreed. HHH pins Jericho, and wins the title. A storybook ending to HHH's big comeback after his career-threatening injury. HHH celebrated his title victory, as the night concluded.
This match was a basic tale of overcoming all odds to achieve your dreams. That is all.
Winner:and NEW Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, "The Game" Triple H!

Wrestlemania 15
WWF Championship match!
The Rock © vs. Steve Austin
This match came at the height of the Austin/McMahon feud, and with alot of build up. Before the match, with the original special guest referee sent to the hospital, Mankind. Vince McMahon appoints himself to be the referee. But, the comissioner, HBK foils Vince's plan by saying that he is the only guy that can appoint a referee for Wrestlemania. The match gets underway, and most of the match is like a bar room brawl with the fight going all over the place. They battle all over the outside, near the entrance, and all over ringside. The break tables, and they break rules. But, the problem was, there were no rules, because this match was no holds barred. The title was on the line in this epic encounter between two arch rivals at Wrestlemania. The first referee was taken out by a Rock Bottom. A second referee was taken out by a chairshot. Rock floored Austin with the Rock Bottom, but only got a two count. Austin laid Rock out with a Stunner, but only got a two count. The third referee got knocked out by Vince McMahon, who came down to ringside, and got involved in the match. Rock and Vince double-team Austin, until Mankind finally returns, and evens up the odds by sending Vince outta there. Rock goes for the Corporate Elbow, but misses. Stunner attempt, but Rock blocks it into a Rock Bottom attempt. Austin counters into a Stone Cold Stunner. The Rock is down and out. Austin covers, and Mankind counts to three. Austin wins the title for the third time in his career at Wrestlemania, which was for the second year in a row. Many recall when Austin beat HBK for the title, one year earlier. Austin celebrates his title victory with a few cold ones, as the crowd goes wild. Vince gets in Austin face on the outside, but gets attacked for his troubles. He gets sent into the ring, where he gets a Stunner, and Austin closes the show in glory.
This match was one of the many highlights of the Attitude Era, because it featured two of the biggest names of that era, point blank. This match was great.
Winner:and NEW WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin!

Pot-review comments:
When the DVD ended, the narrarator said that Wrestlemania elevated everyone that competed on that grand stage, because it was in their nature. This was true, stars and legends were made at Wrestlemania. The guys that won it big time, like Hogan, Bret, Batista, Cena, Mysterio, Austin, & HHH made their mark in the wrestling business, because they made their marks at Wrestlemania. The formentioned are either in the WWE Hall of Fame, or they're future Hall of Famers. Their legacys are etched in stone.
