Title: 2007 Colorado Rockies Replay

Mad Dog - June 20, 2009 01:26 PM (GMT)
I'm still working on the 1960 MLB complete replay but I've been wanting to do this one for a few months. I find the 2007 Colorado Rockies to be a very interesting team. Amazing hitting and a so-so pitching staff that caught fire at the right time and seemed to transcend their talent level until they got to the World Series. Let's see if I can duplicate their successes in this Strat-O-Matic replay.

Eric Byrnes had 2 base hits as the Arizona club defeated the Colorado
Rockies by a score of 3 to 0 at Coors Field.

The game started off with Arizona taking the lead in the first when they
tallied 2 runs on 2 hits.  That early run support was enough for Brandon
Webb(1-0) and Arizona.  Arizona managed 9 in their victory.

Webb was helped out by Jose Valverde who recorded his 1st save.  Aaron
Cook(0-1) was the loser.  He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings.

Disappointing Opening Day for the Rockies there. They get some hits but can't get any runs on the board.

Aaron Cook had a nice outing as he pitched 6 innings and only gave up 4 hits, 2 earned runs and managed to strike out 5 batters. He took the loss unfortunately. Latroy Hawkins struggled during the game as he gave up 3 hits and an earned run in .2 innings of work.

Garrett Atkins had a nice start to the season as he went 3 for 4 and had a double to boot.

Hopefully the Rockies perform better in the second game.

Chris Iannetta had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Colorado Rockies defeated
the Arizona team 12 to 7 at Coors Field.

Colorado brought 6 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 5
base hits.  The highlight belonged to Iannetta who electrified Coors Field
when he tripled bringing in two baserunners.  Colorado rapped out 15 hits for
the night.

Jeff Francis(1-0) went 6 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. Livan
Hernandez(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 6 runs and 6 hits in 1
and 1/3 innings.

The Rockies get revenge in game 2 as the offense comes alive.

Jeff Francis (1-0) got great run support as he struggled behind the plate. He pitched 6 innings, gave up 13 hits, allowed 5 earned runs and struck out 5. He escaped with a win though. LaTroy Hawkins' struggles continues as he pitched an inning and gave up a run off of 2 hits. Not a good start for the relief pitcher.

Todd Helton hit a huge 3 run shot to put the game away for the Rockies. He went 1 of 5 with a HR and 3 RBI. Chris Iannetta went 2 of 5 with a triple and 2 RBI.

1-1 for the Rockies and 2nd place in the West. So far they've been a rough team to manage. The offense is dynamite and the defense is above average but the pitching is just not very good.

This is interesting, as even though I was front-row and ringside for most of that season, they defied all logic with their World Series run. As late as July, they looked like (maybe) a mediocre .500 team.

Heck, I think it was mid-May and they blew a 5 run 7th inning lead to the frickin' ROYALS, at home. It was either Francis or Cook, who had gone 7 innings with only a few hits and tossing a shutout... but pitching coach Bob Apodaca took him out when the dreaded Mark Grudzielanek came to the plate. They were worried about the precious Pitch Count. Manny Corpas came on to blow the game and I wrote off their season, believing it was the worst managerial move I had ever witnessed.

In August, they lost 3 of 4, at home, to the Pirates. I was ticked, because even though I'm a big Pirates fan, I wanted the Rockies to win, simply because they could've used the wins more than the Pirates. To the Pirates, it may have been the difference between 69 or 66 losses...big deal. But to the Rockies it would've made a huge difference.

The Tigers and Rays have had recent "miracle runs", but at least they had emerged as contenders, early in the season. The Rockies' 2007 season was completely unexplainable.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I can get them to the World Series. The game is weighted in their favor but the pitching staff is just not very good. I'm going to be biting my nails all season long trying to keep their heads above waters in a lot of run heavy games.

It seems they got so hot and on a roll that their talent level didn't matter anymore. Plus it seems like they just pitched well enough to get by most of the time. The bullpen isn't terrible and Cook and Francis seem like they can put some quality starts in.

Strike this for now. The game ate my authorization code so I lost the season and my 1960 season. Suck...
