Title: WCW Saturday Night 1996 Reviews
Description: January to December 1996

Timmy8271 - March 15, 2009 03:46 AM (GMT)
So I totally forgot about this site till I got a email from one of the mods about it. Seems this section is mostly dead except for the weekly news threads so I thought I would post some reviews of the 39 disc set I recently got for about $35. Here we go:

1-6-96

Tony and Dusty are on commentary and are constatnly pluggin the Clash of Champions from vegas(Hogan/Savage vs Flair/Giant in the main event)

Eddie Guerrero vs The Gambler:
- Match is joined in progress but it really gets interesting when Gambler fucks up a move and Eddie gets pissed. Eddie destroys him with a brutal brainbuster and then a "jackknife" or as we know it: The Frogsplash.

Disco Inferno vs Black Bart
- This pretty much sucked. Yes it's the same Black Bart from World Class wrestling fame. Disco wins with Neckbreaker

Meng vs Mike Davis:
- Another not very good squash match.Tony and Dusty kept hard selling the Clash of the champions that is was "For Free and not like our competition that's rumbling for a price". Meng wins with the death grip.

Johnny B Badd vs David Taylor for the TV title
- Good match with both guys going at it on the mat. I forgot that Mero used to be actually good. Taylor rules it with the uppercuts and the bridges. Finish was great with Taylor flipping into the ring and Badd just knocking him out.

Alex Wright vs Chris Kanyon
- Man Kanyon's offense is great at times. Wright held his own but Kanyon held this together. Best thing about it is it wasn't really a Squash match like I thought it would be. Wright wins with a german suplex

Hugh Morris w/Meng vs Mark Starr
- Too bad Starr is not as good as Kanyon. Hugh wins with the No Laughing Matter and almost lands on Mark's face.

-The Horsemen(Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman) vs the American Males
: Good back and forth match with Pillman getting the win with a roll up. Tony and Dusty keep hapring on Pillman's "Loose Cannon" gimmick and how it's causing problems with the Horsemen vs Dungeon of Doom.

Main Event: Lex Luger vs the Cobra
- I don't know why they didn't end with Horsemen/Males but this was the final match. I don't think I have to tell ya how it ended as you should already know. Alright it ended with the Torture Rack.

Show ends with a Hogan/Savage interview about the Clash. The show also featured a Flair/Giant interview and part one of the Mike Ditka interview about Mongo(WILL DITKA JOIN WCW? Find out next week)

JimBob Skeeter - March 15, 2009 11:41 AM (GMT)
39 discs? Holy crap. How long of a time frame do they cover, and is it all just Saturday night shows? I just had a total flashback.

Erick Von Erich - March 15, 2009 08:39 PM (GMT)
Wow..I remember that Mongo/Ditka crap. They promoted the hell out of it on Nitro for weeks.

Good thing the Gambler knew when to walk away and knew when to run.

Curious if the "Mike Davis" was the same guy from CWF/Global and other various smaller promotion of the late 80's and early 90's. I think he was 1/2 of the "Rock n' Roll RPMs". WCW would employ a lot of stiffs like that at this time (like Black Bart and Steve Doll).

And hey...glad you're back, Timmy!

Timmy8271 - March 16, 2009 02:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah it's just the Saturday Night shows: Here's the review for the 1-13-96 episode:

- Babyface vs Babyface starts with some good mat work with Armbars and head scissors. Armstrong(who Dusty calls Scott Amrstrong) punches Wright in the corner to do the first "bad guy" move. Armstrong hits a nice doctor bomb for 2. He gets cocky and gets rolled up for the 1 2 3.
Winner: Alex Wright

Commercial for the Clash/Nitro travel package.

2. Scott Armstrong vs Eddie Guerrero:
- Early in the match, Armstrong goes after the back with a Mexican surfboard and Camel Clutch. Eddie tries to come back by going after the leg but Armstrong gets control back. Scott makes a mistake with a cocky pin and Eddie hits the brainbuster and Frogsplash for the win.
- Eddie Guerrero

Promo with VK Wallstreet about his match vs Mr. JL later on.

Clash of the Champions Control Center: Runs down the card:

Mexican Heavyweight title: Konnan vs Psicosis

- Bagwell and Kanyon start with Bagwell taking advange and the males hitting a double dropkick. Dusty marks out for Tony saying "Men at work taking a coffee break" and says "The American Males didn't run today because it was a holiday". God bless Dusty Commentary. Mark starr finally makes a comeback with a cheap shot and some kicks to bagwell. They then go after Riggs leg. Tony starts talking about Madusa's return and "throwing away the title that means nothing". Great finish as Men at work go after Riggs and Mark Starr turns around to a Bagwell cross bodyblock.
Winners- American males

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage interview: Talk about the Giant and Savage's match vs Flair.

Savage gets out of it and hits his elbow. Hogan comes out and Anderson comes out and hits Macho with a foreign object and Flair wins the match. The ref sees the object and reverses the decision.
Winner: Randy Savage by DQ

Savage and Hogan are interviewed after the match. Hogan calls Tony "Tony Shivonte. Says he's sick of the Dungeon of Doom and the Horsemen coming out and says he'll destroy Meng on Nitro. Savage is out of it and asks who's he fighting?

Good show with only a few crappy matches. It was WCW's "Fan appreciation" month so they put on some good matches. Best match was Armstrong/Wright or Armstrong/Guerrero.

JimBob Skeeter - March 16, 2009 02:13 AM (GMT)
Col. Parker and Sherri getting married. VK Wallstreet. I love this shit. I also remember Hogan saying "Shivaonte" a LOT, too.

Timmy8271 - March 19, 2009 03:21 AM (GMT)

Next Review: The Clash of Champions.

JimBob Skeeter - March 19, 2009 12:52 PM (GMT)
Why don't more heels do what Pillman did? I absolutely loved that shit where their opponent was basically knocked out,but they'd uput themon top of themselves and kickout at two. WE HAVE A NEW US CHAM.........awwwwwwwwww.

Erick Von Erich - March 19, 2009 03:30 PM (GMT)
The crowd chanting "rock n' roll" for Todd Morton is pretty damn funny. Like the time I went to Nitro, Kevin Nash jokingly mentioned "The Dog" (Al Green) and the crowd started barking.

And hey... _I_ care about Mongo and the Bears. And Pepe the Puppy, too.

Timmy8271 - March 27, 2009 03:43 AM (GMT)

Winner: Ric Flair

Interview with Flair: More talk about Hogan and Savage.

Thoughts: The final 2 matches saved this from being a total borefest. Too much talk about Hogan and Savage. I can't wait till we get to the Outsiders coming in to freshen it up a little bit.

Timmy8271 - April 19, 2009 04:08 AM (GMT)

Winner Johnny B badd

Johnny B Badd interview: It's funny during half of these interviews Mean Gene is wearing a bowtie and the other half he's wearing a full tie. DDP lost 6 million of Kim's money and Johnny is looking for revenge. Kim is not too fond of this match and she doesn't want to leave Johnny.

WCW Hotline report: What WWF superstar is coming to wcw? What former WWF guy from Hawaii is going back to WWF and had a stop over in WCW?(Crush?)

2/17/96 After the Superbrawl

Clips of Liz turning on the Macho man during the cage match and Flair celebration during Nitro.

1. The State Patrol vs American Males:
If you didn't know the State Patrol is James Earl Wright and Buddy Lee Parker.
This was surprising as I didn't expect much from it but it was decent. Match ends with a Double Dropick on Wright. I wouldn't call it a squash match as the Patrol had some nice moves.
Winner: American Males

2. Belfast Brusier vs Brad Armstrong:
Oh yeah this has potential, two great talents. Before the match, we have a Insert Regal interview from backstage who talks about his rivalry. The announcers put Armstrong over huge talking about his legacy on Saturday night. Some nice back and forth action but I can't get past the great mullets from both men. Just as the match was getting really good the Blue Bloods come in for the DQ and Finlay takes care of them both.
Winner by DQ Brad Armstrong

3. Men at Work vs The Armstrong Brothers:
- Steve and Scott represent the Armstrong brothers here. Funny thing before the match with Men at work not coming out and trying to have a Coffee break. Both these tag teams are Saturday Night regulars and work well with each other. Towards the end of the match they do some good double team moves but Men at work get the win with a Northern Light Suplex by Starr.
Winner: Men at Work

In the weekly lets bury guys in WWF we see clips of Hogan beating Vader.

Interview with Jimmy Hart and Loch Ness: He says he's here for one reason: To end Hulkamania

4. DDP vs Mike Winner
- Before the match, DDP gets his Vest and ring jacket taken away cause he couldn't pay for it. He lost everything to Johnny B badd at SuperBrawl. DDP reminds me of Flair in he lets his jobber opponents get a lot of offense in. Winner is ok but he loses pretty quick to the Diamond Cutter.
Winner: DDP

5. Blue Bloods(Eaton and Taylor) w/Regal vs Sting and Lex Luger
- Now it's going to get interesting as the Tag champs take on the Blue Bloods. Taylor starts off by putting Sting in some submissions. Taylor is really underrated and it's a shame he doesn't have Regal's Charisma cause he could have made it big. Thing break down pretty quickly and after some botches Sting beats Eaton with the Scorpion Deathlock.

A recap of Superbrawl featuring Brian Pillman leaving, Flair/Savage and Hogan/Giant with the debut of Loch Ness

Interview with Savage and Hogan behind a cage. They talk about Nitro.

7. Public Enemy vs Larry Santo and Buck Quartermaine
- Pretty boring match and the less said the better.

- Poor Todd Morton never stood a chance. Sullivan knees him right in the nuts with the Tree of Woe.

Clips of Flair beating Vader from Starcade 93. WCW really hated Vader around this time.

Mean Gene with a Hotline report about Brian Pillman leaving.

9. Alex Wright vs Dusty Wolfe
- Nothing much with Alex winning with a German Suplex.

10. Nasty Boys vs Flair and Arn Anderson
- OK match with Anderson winning thanks to Liz and Woman with a ddt.

Final thoughts: Started out good but too many Squash matches. Finlay/Armstrong was really good and worth watching.

Erick Von Erich - July 20, 2009 05:47 PM (GMT)
Who was that guy wrestling Joey Maggs? He sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't believe we've ever heard of him before.

I remember the "Men at Work". By any chance, were they announced as hailing from "The Land Down Under"?

Timmy8271 - July 22, 2009 06:55 AM (GMT)
Nah they hailed from "The Construction site" or something like that.

2-24-96

Intro showing clips from Nitro of Flair beating Savage and the Horsemen/Dungeon of Doom attacking Hogan but someone comes in to try and save Hogan. Who is it?

Clips from last week's Saturday night of DDP getting his Jacket and robe repoed.

Interview with Johnny B badd and Kimberly about DDP. Johnny is happy about DDP losing everything but Kim isn't.

1. Johnny B Badd vs The man that shall remain nameless that rhymes with Bris Kenoit
- This must have been one of Johnny's last WCW matches. Before the match we see a cheesy WCW Hotline commercial with Gene and bobby chasing everyone. Benoit just totally dominates this match early and even does a Liontamer. Badd finally comes back with a double Axe handle but accidently does a top rope Sunset Flip to ref Nic Patrick and gets DQ'd. Nice ending to a pretty good match.

Intro: Clips of Nitro of Giant/Flair. Spoiler alert: Giant wins the title

Marcus Bagwell comes out and says Sting wishes Luger luck.

1. The Barbarian vs Chris Benoit

Special Look at Konnan

- All night long the announcer have been saying Luger is stuck in Traffic. Bagwell comes out and says Lex isn't here. Bagwell takes his place and gets destroyed. Luger comes out and makes the save.

Lex Luger interview: he wants another chance.

Final thoughts. Good show overall with some nice matches.

Erick Von Erich - September 1, 2009 10:09 PM (GMT)
I remember kinda' liking the stupid "Luger always has excuses and is unreliable" angle. They had an angle on Nitro where they showed Luger camped out in front of an arena (complete with a blanket and reading a book), so he wouldn't miss his shot against the Giant. Wonderfully goofy crap.

Of course, like most things in WCW in the 90's: "the angle went nowhere".

JimBob Skeeter - September 2, 2009 01:08 PM (GMT)
That WAS a pretty good angle, if not one of the best ones that Luger was ever in, (which isn't saying a whole lot, besides the Lex Express.)

These are three 1 hour shows for the next 3 episode so I thought I would add all 3 in one post instead of making 3 different posts.

Intro with clips from Nitro of Flair attacking the Giant and Sting making the save.

1. Hardwork Bobby Walker vs Lex Luger
- Luger didn't show up again for his match vs Giant yet he shows up here? Match doesn't even last 20 seconds as Luger attacks from behind and puts on the Torture rack. This knocks out Walker from the Battle Bowl competition.

Clips from after Nitro of Sting yelling at Luger. Luger says he will sleep outside the arena so he's not late.

Interview with Gary Juster about the reinstatement of DDP. After this a video is played of DDP's makeover.

2, Fire and Ice vs The Steiner Brothers
- BIG MAN WRESTLING. About what you expect, Lots of suplexes and clotheslines. Match ends when all 4 brawl around the ring and the ref calls it off.

Hotline report: 2 WWF superstars are coming to WCW(Gee I wonder who that is?)

3. Earl Robert Eaton vs Eddie Guerrero
- Short but good match. After the match Regal and Taylor come out and yell at Eaton.

Clips of a charity event with Shaq, Hulk Hogan and Sugar Rey Leonard. Features a Sugar Ray vs Shaq foxy boxing match.

4. Public Enemy vs The Gambler and Steve Doll
- Squash match with Rocco winning with the Drive by. Steve Doll gets a double ddt on the outside.

Slamboree control Center: Giant/Sting, Konnan/Liger Steiner/Booty vs Pitman/Steiner, Regal/Taylor vs Duggan/Wallstreet, PE vs Benoit/Sullivan, Flair/Savage vs Guerrero/Anderson, Hawk/Luger vs Booker T/Animal, Barbarian/DDP vs Meng/Morrus, Boogie Nights vs Slater/Eaton, Bubba/Stevie Ray vs Fire Ice.

Video of the Savage/Flair feud

5. VK Wallstreet vs Sting
- OK match. Wallstreet is pretty boring but sting held up his side. Sting wins with the deathlock.

Sting and Luger interview: Sting is sick of the excuses.

Final thoughts: OK show. Eaton/Guerrero was the best match. Lots of talk about Luger.

5-17-96

Clips from Nitro of Luger vs Giant. Giant chokeslams Luger through Flair's table.

1. Sting vs Meng
- Short match as Barbarian accidentally big boots Meng and sting pins him for the win.

Sting interview: He apologizes to Lex Luger. Luger will be tied to Jimmy Hart in the Giant/Sting match.

Giant video

2. Steve Doll vs Jushin Thunder Liger
- Talk about a weird match. Doll actually got some offense in but Liger's splash was just too much.

Clips of Sting beating up Cactus Jack

Hotline report: A huge star might be leaving his current organization and appearing at Slamboree.

3. Chris Benoit and Kevin Sullivan vs Rick Fargo and Mike Hayner
- This is brutal for the poor jobbers. Benoit drops Fargo on his head with a Dragon Suplex and gets the win the the Crossface.

4. Billy Kidman vs DDP
- DDP is making his return to wcw here. He looks like he's lost some weight. Maybe it's the new outfit I don't know. Poor Kidman didn't have a chance as DDP just destroys him. Shark and Big Bubba are sitting in the crowd for no particular reason. DDP wins.

Clips of Dean Malenko winning the Cruserweight title from Ohtani on WCW Worldwide.

5. Jim Duggan vs Barbarian
- Oh this is going to be MOTY type material here. Yeah this was pretty bad. Barbarian wins when Duggan bring in the hardwood.

Final thoughts. Bad show with Doll/Liger being the best match

- Man Booty Man sucks so bad. He wins with the High knee.

Clips of DDP getting his title shot taken away from him after winning Battle Bowl.

3. Men at Work vs Harlem Heat
- Men at work are now Mike Winer and Mark Starr. They get beat in timely fashion when booker lands right on Starr's face with the Harlem hangover. That had to hurt.

Hotline report: Retirement of the Greatest wrestler ever known?

4. Sting vs Steven regal
- Good match although short. They would have a better match at the Great American bash. Sting wins

Great American Bash control center: Already booked: Giant/Luger for the title, Flair/Arn vs Greene/Mongo, Sullivan/Benoit, Malenko vs the debuting Rey Jr.

5. Barbarian vs Randy Savage:
- This is the match that was booked but Savage was banned from TV. This leads to one of my favorite WCW angles. Savage comes out from the crowd and wants Barbarian. Mean Gene and a member of the WCW commitee come out and say Savage is suspended. Savage snaps and slaps the guy. He then gives him the Elbow Drop. The cops come in and Savage attacks them and leaves. Outstanding angle. Pissed off savage is the best ever.

Final thoughts: That last angle saved this show from being pretty boring. Savage is awesome. Plus i'm pretty sure this was the week Hall showed up and WCW changed forever.

Intro with clips of the Mongo/Kevin Greene workout video

1. TV title match: Lex Luger vs Dick Slater

Jimmy Hart and Giant interview: Talks about all the people Giant beat and how he will beat Luger at GAB.

Hulk Hogan music Video: The Champion

2. The Booty Man vs Mark Kyle
- Seriously, the match only consisted of a high knee. I think Booty Man's entrance was longer.

3. Ric Flair and Arn Anderson vs The Armstrongs
- Before the match, a video of the Horsemen vs Mcmichael feud is shown. This was an ok Squash match with Armstrongs getting a little offense but the Horsemen win with a Arn Spinebuster.

5. Pat Tanaka and Kurosawa vs American Males
- Good match as I always like the Males and the Japanese team made it competitive. The males win with a double dropkick.

Video on LOD

6. Alex Wright vs Konnan
- For the US title. Another good match with Konnan doing his wacky submissions and he gets the win with a rollup.

Clips of Sting beating Steve Austin

7. The Gambler vs Prince Iakuea
- Prince's "debut" match. Pretty boring match with Prince winning with a springboard body press.

Macho Man tries to get in the building and wrestle. Macho then attacks the Camera Man.

8. DDP vs The Cobra
- OK match with Cobra looking like he might win but DDP hits the Diamond Cutter and it's over. After the Match DDP is interviewed and is angry about losing his title shot.

This week in WCW Motorsports

9. Blue Bloods vs Fire and Ice
- Very hard hitting. Fire and Ice look good with the power moves and the blue bloods were more traditional. Ice wins with the big splash on Eaton.

Hotline Report: Superstars coming to WCW

10. Sting vs Johnny Grunge
- PE looks like they are in pajamas(Grey shorts and shirt) OK match thanks to Sting. PE screws up the finish especially Rocco.

Overall: Pretty boring show with some good matches but felt like it went forever.

- Last about a minute with Regal winning with a nice Double underhook suplex. Regal is interviewed about his match vs Sting at the GAB.

Macho rallys up Mongo and Greene.

8. Nasty Boys vs Men at Work
- Nastry boys aren't very good. They almost kill poor Mark Starr with clumsy moves. Knobbs wins with a splash.

9. Hugh Morrus vs Sting
- Pretty good back and forth match. Sting wins with the Deathlock. Sting is interviewed after the match about his match with Regal.

Overall: This was basically a advertisement for the Bash. The matches meant nothing but some of them were good.
