Christopher Daniels on Between the Ropes Recap

By Richard Trionfo

This week on Between the Ropes, Fritz, Dickerman, and Vito DeNucci were joined by ‘The Fallen Angel’ Christopher Daniels to talk about his Iron Man match against A.J. Styles at Against All Odds this Sunday, his involvement in the Six Sides of Steel match at Turning Point, working in the X Division, and many other issues.

The interview began with discussion about his match on Sunday against A.J. Styles. Christopher was asked about the expectations, and he says the two people who have the highest expectations for this match are him and A.J. It adds to things that it is on a pay per view. He does not think that he has ever had as much pressure put on him since he has been involved in tag matches before on the monthly pay per views. Now he is going to be able to show if he belongs on the top of the card.

Chris was asked about his first match against A.J. at the NWA 53rd Anniversary show. Chris was asked about where A.J. ranks among the wrestlers he has faced around the world. Chris says that he thinks he can have a good first match with anybody. With A.J. there has been chemistry from the beginning because A.J. makes him work smart and try to do something different. He thinks A.J. might be the most innovative wrestler in the world, and if not on top, he is in the top five. The important thing is being able to make your opponent shine in the match. If your opponent helps to put you over in the match, then that makes you put forth your best. Chris says that he has really wanted to work a program with A.J. and is looking forward to working with him.

Talk moved on to the Six Sides of Steel match at Turning Point. He was asked about how he felt going into that match. He said his anticipation backstage was off the charts and he wanted the match to get there. Once he got on the ramp, all frustration went away. There are so many things that could go wrong, but the match happened the way they wanted it to go. He thought the crowd reacted the way they expected, and probably better. Chris says that he thought the match and the storyline made the crowd know that something big was going to happen. That match was the culmination of a six to eight month storyline, and it was the perfect ending for a good story. Chris was asked about Elix’s spot from the top of the cage. Chris said that Elix talked to him about doing that move the first time they wrestled America’s Most Wanted in a cage. Chris said that when he saw Elix get on the top of the cage and start walking along the top, it seemed like time stood still. He says that it is still astonishing to see Elix hit that move every time he watches it. Chris does not think that move will be duplicated or topped.

Chris was asked about the environment in the TNA locker room and whether the veterans interact with the younger wrestlers. Chris says that there have not been too many instances where the X Division wrestlers go to the wrestlers like Hall and Nash because there are so many agents who work with the X Division like Terry Taylor, Shane Douglas, and Jerry Lynn. By working with those agents, some of the X Division wrestlers are starting to tell a story and work holds to become more rounded workers. Chris says that some wrestlers come to him and ask for advice. He says the young guys are willing to learn and they talk to the veterans in the locker room. A lot of the guys are open to constructive criticism. Chris says that he even goes to the people like Terry Taylor, Shane Douglas, and Jerry Lynn for advice because he is still learning.

Chris was asked about being a part of TNA as it grows. Things have changed since they started in Nashville. They are making their move towards making a name in the industry. He was going to be loyal to a company that gives him a chance, and that company is TNA. Chris wants to help make TNA a strong number two company. Chris was asked about the change from the weekly pay per views to Impact and the monthly pay per views. He says that things are different now because you are able to build things to the monthly pay per view instead of trying to do things on the weekly pay per view.

Chris was asked about what it is like to not be in a tag team since he has been involved with Triple X for so long in TNA. He thinks that he has something to do as a singles wrestler, and you will see better things with him and Elix as singles wrestlers. He feels that Triple X was a good team when they were focusing on the tag teams. They talked about the talent in the company and the feeling that you can have a good match with a lot of people on the roster. It helps to make things unpredictable with all of the X Division talent. He talks about being able to work with people like Michael Shane, Frankie Kazarian, Elix Skipper, and The Naturals. He liked working with people who will put everything on the line in their matches.

Chris was asked about his work in Japan and the independents. He was asked why he did not appear in ECW. He said it had a lot to do with logistics because he lived in Los Angeles. The cost to fly him back and forth for ECW did not make it the right situation for him. He was under contract with WCW twice, and things just did not fall the right way for him. It was a case of the wrong place at the wrong time.

Chris was asked if he should be in the main event at the show. He says there are two ways to look at it. One way is if you want to end things on a high point, you might want to end with the Iron Man match. The other way is that you should end the show with a World Title match. He thinks the World Title match should be the final match on the pay per view. Chris knows that he will put on a good match wherever he is on the card.

If someone else had said this, I'd suspect it was a company line, but having met Chris Daniels, I have no doubt that this is how he truely feels. Good interview.
