Streak: 1 win

New York Yankees:

Streak: 1 win

Top Hitters:

Bill Skowron .370 BA, 2 HR and 9 RBI
Mickey Mantle .366 BA, 5 HR and 15 RBI

John Gabler 1-0, 1.54 ERA, 11.2 IP, 4 K
Bill Short 1-0, 2.19 ERA, 12.1 IP, 2 K

Overview:

The Yankees had a rough stretch after starting 5-0. Roger Maris missed a few games and Yogi Berra played in right field. Berra is horrible in the field and really brought the team down. The Yankees have also been plagued by inconsistent pitching and the inability to bring in runs without using the longball. With Maris back in the lineup the team is starting to look more like it did.

Mad Dog - January 21, 2009 10:12 PM (GMT)
Boston Red Sox:

Record: 5-7
Last 10: 3-7
Streak: 1 win

Bill Monbouquette 1-1, 3.18 ERA, 17 IP, 13 K

Overview:

Boston is lacking in general. The offense is poor when Ted Williams isn't in the lineup. The team lacks power and speed on the bases. The pitching lacks any sort of depth outside of a few guys.

Early Wynn whitewashed Baltimore on 2 hits at Memorial Stadium as the Chicago
White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 1 to 0.

Wynn(2-1) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Baltimore offense.  He
gave up just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 1.04 to
0.68.  Baltimore had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Hoyt Wilhelm(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 9 innings and
surrendered just 4 hits and 1 walk. 'He came out with good stuff,' Al Lopez
said about Wynn. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.'

of 6 to 4 at Griffith Stadium.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings.  Cleveland won it in the 12th
inning.  After an out was recorded, Tito Francona started the attack as he

the season).  Washington was out-hit by Cleveland, 13 hits to 10.

The winning pitcher was Johnny Klippstein(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and
2/3 innings. John Briggs earned the save, his 1st.  Jack Kralick(0-1) was

McDougald who excited the crowd when he doubled plating three runs.  New York
finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Dick Hall had a strong outing and Bob Cerv had 4 hits as the Kansas City
Athletics clobbered the outmatched Boston Red Sox, 18 to 2.

Cerv was a one-man wrecking crew.  He banged out a single plating two runs in
the 1st inning, emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd of the
season) in the 3rd inning, hit a one-base hit which scored a run in the 5th
inning and slapped a single bringing in a run in the 6th inning.  Kansas City
bats were hot in the 1st inning with 5 runs on 4 hits and the 3rd inning when
they had 7 runs on 4 hits.  Kansas City finished with 20 hits in the victory.

The win went to Hall(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Tom Brewer(0-2)
absorbed the loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 14 hits

Pittsburgh Pirates:

Record: 11-5
Last 10: 6-4
Streak: 3 wins

Top Hitters:

Honestly, the whole starting lineup is hitting well and no one stands out above the rest.

Top Pitchers:

Same deal as the hitters.

Overview:

This team has been a beast in the NL so far. They pitch well, they field well and they hit well. They're easily the most balanced team in 1960. I see them easily winning the NL and walkinging into the World Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers:

Record: 11-6

Larry Sherry 2-1, 2.38 ERA, 22.2 IP, 13 K
Don Drysdale 2-2, 3.29 ERA, 41 IP, 44 K

Overview:

The Dodgers are a solid pitching and defensive oriented team. The offense has overperformed to this point but seems to be falling back to earth. It should be interesting to see if they stay in the hunt all year.

The Giants have sported the best pitching staff in the NL over the first month of the season. They've also sported one of the worst offenses in the NL.

Mad Dog - January 22, 2009 06:47 PM (GMT)
Milwaukee Braves:

Record: 7-7
Last 10: 4-6

Top Pitchers:

Lew Burdette 2-0, 1.26 ERA, 28.2 IP, 15 K

Overview:

Where's Hank Aaron you ask? Well, Aaron has struggled during the early goings of this season. He's batting a weak .211 but is getting on base at a rate of .308. So it's not all bad. It's still early and he should easily rebound from his bad start. The Braves have atrocious pitching and it's been killing them throughout the season so far.

Cincinnati Reds:

Record: 8-9

Top Pitchers:

Jim O'Toole 2-0, 2.39 ERA, 26.1 IP, 18 K

Overview:

This is an interesting team. They have a high powered offense that can hit the ball out of the park at anytime. They also have one of the worst pitching staff's in the NL. The Reds have the second best offense in the NL and the second worst pitching numbers. They've been up and down all season so far.

Top Hitters:

Jimmie Coker .283 BA, 2 HR and 12 RBI

Top Pitchers:

Curt Simmons 0-0, 2.51 ERA, 14.1 IP, 6 K

Overview:

The Phillies are statistically the worst team in the 1960 season. The fact that they're 7-10 right now is a miracle. Strangely enough, they seem to have Pittsburgh's number lately.

Stan Musical .259 BA, 3 HR and 7 RBI

Top Pitchers:

Larry Jackson 2-1, 3.31 ERA, 32.2 IP, 18 K

Overview:

One of the worst performing teams during April. They've slowly rebounded and started winning a few games. This team really needs their star players like Ken Boyer to start playing to form. He's currently batting .220 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. Not good at all.

Bob Anderson 0-2, 3.58 ERA, 27.2 IP, 17 K

Overview:

The Chicago Cubs are a study. Can one man carry an entire team on his back and be successful. So far this season the Cubs have won solely on the back of Hall of Famer Ernie Banks. He's had some unreal performances so far this season. 2 HR and 6 RBI on Opening Day and another game with a HR and 5 RBI.

Cardinals pulled out a win over the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to
3 at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Joe
Cunningham lined a base-hit.  George Crowe stepped up next and he grounded
into a double play.  Bill White then drew a walk.  Ken Boyer was up next and
he banged out a single, and an error was also committed.  Musial stepped into
the box and was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Daryl Spencer added
his contribution to the rally and drew a walk resulting in an exciting win
for St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  The
teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.

Lindy McDaniel(2-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Chris Short(0-2)
ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and 3 walks in 2/3

Ellsworth(1-0) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Bob Friend(2-3)
