Of course this isn't accurate and proves nothing. Feel free to discuss.

Well, if people here HONESTLY think that is the MOTY, they either haven't seen all the matches listed.......or they have lost their minds. That match IMO, if far from MOTY.

SamoaRowe - February 8, 2005 02:28 PM (GMT)
I'm guilty of not seeing all the matches listed, but the Wrestlemania main event is one of my all-time favorites, partly because at the age of 20 I was shouting "tap out you sonofabitch" during a predetermined, "Fake" wrestling match.

I tried downloading Joe/Punk last night, but I'm not sure if it was a success or not. I'll find out later when i get home.

Random thought I had the other day....

You know how people always say that "MOTYC" suffer from being early in the year? I think the past two years have showed that's pretty much bullshit. I mean this year the vast majority of people clamored for the Mania 3-Way, and the next biggest hype I saw (and the one I agreed with) was for Eddie/Brock from NWO. Now of course you had your support for Joe/Punk and some puro, but the vast majority of people went with one of the first two matches. They both happened in the first 1/3 of the year. In 2003, Benoit/Angle ran away with the shit, and it happened in January. Now, I don't know about 02 or beforehand, but it seems that matches don't get hurt by being in the beginning of the year. If anything, I bet people have a stigma towards picking later in the year matches because they think they like it just because its "fresh in their mind."

NOTE: I definetly think Angle/Benoit and either the Mania 3-Way or Eddie/Brock deserved those honors, I'm just making a point.

2002 PWI was between Michaels/HHH (Summerslam) and Rock/Hogan (WM X-8) IIRC. Definitely not a good year.

Honestly though, the only reason why those matches were the leading votes were because those are the matches that the MOST people have seen.

Triple H vs. Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels from Wrestlemania XX - This to me is the most overrated match of the year. Now, don't get me wrong....I do like the match. Actually it's one of the best if not THE best 3 way I've ever seen. But as far as MOTYC's go......it falls short. At least in my opinion.....

WWE Royal Rumble Match - Good battle royal....MOTY? Not a chance in hell.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar- WWE No Way Out - I talked about this in one of my posts in the "what are you watching" threads, clearly IMO it's better than the Mania three way and is probably the WWE MOTY.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle- WWE Wrestlemania XX - Solid match here. I would put it around ***1/2-**** range......it's just not the MOTY.

Randy Orton vs. Cactus Jack- WWE Backlash - Easily said Orton's best to date effort, and Foley did a hell of a job trying to get Orton over during the course of this feud. It falls short in the match of the year category however. Too much hardcore, and still has holes that hold it back. Great match nonetheless....

Eddie Guerrero vs. JBL- WWE Great American Bash - I have not seen this match.

Bryan Danielson vs. Homicide- ROH 4/24 - First time I watched this match.....I didn't even like it that much. There is plently of "smart" work in this one, but the match is booked incredibly good. This one is up there, but if falls short of the match of the year IMO.

Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk- ROH 6/12 - Great match. I really enjoyed this one and was glad that it sprung two other awesome matches. Also, this is the match the finally sold me completely on Joe as a worker. I thought he was good.....but not as good as he would be in this one. MOTYC for sure, but it may pale in comparison to the ones that I see as better for this year......and there are only about two matches better than this one, which is impressive in itself.

Bryan Danielson vs. Austin Aries- ROH 8/7 - This match is kind of one that gets on my nerves when people tell me it's the match of the year. They were going long in this one just for the sake of going long. There is too much dribble in the middle and your left looking for more substance that's just not there. It's a good match, definately something to check out if you haven't seen it, but honestly it's not any better than ***1/2.

Bryan Danielson vs. Samoa Joe- ROH 10/2 - I REALLY enjoyed this match as I remember watching it just days after the first Joe/Punk match on 6/12. Dragon and Joe seem to have really solid chemistry in their matches and apparently improved quite a bit since the last time they fought in a singles match (First Year Anniversary) and they did a great job on the booking in this one too. I liked how they played off the fact that Dragon was the last person to defeat Joe in ROH and this match just worked. There is a little bit of stuff in this match for everyone as they go at it on the floor, in the ring, trade holds. Really really good one. I would recommend this as a must see in the year 2004. Also, if you were wondering....I'd give it about ****.

Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk- ROH 10/16 - Plain and simple. This is your MOTY. There hasn't been anything in North America that could touch this matches brilliance in sometime. GREAT work by both guys and the crowd just adds to the goodness that is Joe/Punk II. This match is a MUST SEE for any smartmark that hasn't seen it. It gets the DK seal of approval.

KENTA/Marufuji vs. Misawa/Ogawa- NOAH 4/25 - This is up there with some of the best matches all year. I don't think it would be unfair to call this the tag team match of the year. My rating? ****1/2

Kenta Kobashi vs. Yoshihiro Takayama- NOAH 4/25 - This match is awesome and is still one of the more underrated matches of the year. Also, Takayama won me over in this match as I loved the dynamic between him and Kobashi in a "I kick ass better than you" kind of way. It sucks to see Tak get hurt so badly this year as this is a rematch I wanna see in the baddest of ways.

Kenta Kobashi vs. Jun Akiyama- NOAH 7/10 - IMO, before Joe/Punk II happened....this was your MOTY. Unreal work by both guys and some mind boggling spots that you come to expect from Kobashi. Great match and definately the best from Japan that I've seen from this year.

I've noticed this too. A lot of the RoH mutants are falling into this "if it's longer than 30 minutes it must be good" kind of mindset. Some people need to remember that length doesn't equal quality.

Pretty much every Ironman Match in recent history (WWE) is like that.

"OMG! Bret/Shawn was the greatest match of all time!"
"OMG205! Brock/Angle was the greatest match of all time!"
"OMG!Benoit/HHH is the greatest match of 2004 and ever~!"

I hate long matches, mainly because at least half of it is resting.

Word. I think about 20-30 minutes is perfect time for a match.

Mad Dog - February 8, 2005 11:43 PM (GMT)
I don't hate long matches. I hated Bret/Shawn because it was boring as hell and didn't have enough material to fit 60 minutes. I don't care for Joe/Punk because I hate investing an hour into a match for it to only be a draw. Good matches but in the end I feel pissed off and cheated.

I like Flair/Steamboat because they wrestled a smart match and filled 60 minutes. Same with a lot of the mid 90s All Japan Triple Crown defenses. As long as you have the material to fill the time and have a winner I'm fine with length.

Scrooge McSuck - February 9, 2005 04:36 AM (GMT)
*I hate long WWE matches, because the style of wrestling is just too damn slow and boring to warrant anything longer than 15-20 minutes.

""OMG!Benoit/HHH is the greatest match of 2004 and ever~!""

Who said this? ;) Every comment I can remember about this was along the lines of "disappointing, maybe ***1/2, good but not great."

Scrooge McSuck - February 9, 2005 06:41 AM (GMT)
Just proving a point that everyone seems to wet themselves every time WWE does an Iron Man Match.

It's kind of CB's style. He's always quoting things that aren't really quotes.

Scrooge McSuck - February 15, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart and Angle/Brock are often reffered to be as "great" matches, while, in my opinion, both matches are nothing but long rest periods (a.k.a the first 30-35 minutes of the match), then a bunch of shit thrown together.

Rock/HHH can be in the same category, except it didn't bore me to tears like the above two.
