Title: Hellboy II

I'm excited as all hell for this movie. Looks awesome.

Plus it's the first half of the one-two summer blockbuster with Dark Knight next week.

Who else is excited?

Metrodome - July 9, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, count me as excited. The first one more the exceeded my expectations, and I've heard this one is even better. Del Toro rules.

Fucking FANTASTIC movie. Absolutely stunning visually. The vilian was fucking badass. My only gripe was that there were some moments that were totally telegraphed and I saw coming from a mile away, but it didn't bring down the movie at all.

Yeah...right with ya' on the telegraph thing. The finale is given away before the credits even roll.

I'm a Marvel/DC zombie, so I've never read a Hellboy comic (just his appearance in a Batman/Starman miniseries about 10 years ago and the occassional "FCBDY" giveaway).... but this was a heck of a movie. I'd say Iron Man was the better movie, but I liked Hellboy II more.

I dug the new guy, Strauss. Liked how they addressed the obvious questions about him: "isn't he fragile" and "wouldn't he suck in a fight"? Abe the fish guy is a combo of Aquaman and C-3PO (BTW..I stil wonder: wouldn't HE suck in a fight?) . Perlman as Hellboy does a better job of The Thing than Michael Chiklis ever could. Selam Blair is convincing as the tough girlfriend....but for whatever reason it still takes her forever to pop out her powers. Ben Stiller was disruptive as the old parapelgic Demon in a Wagon, though. I really hate that guy.

I think: "Hellboy...that's Mike Mignola". But this movie is undoubtedly Guillermo Del Toro, whereas the first was mostly Mignola's. That's no knock on Mignola, though. He's done every comic book artist's American Dream (well, aside from banging Wonder Woman, that is): work for the the big two, create and own your own original character, then let Hollywood run with it while you sit back and rack in the dough.

One problem...well it's actually TWO... at the 10:40pm screening we went to , one lady brought her infant son along.

It never ceases to amaze me that parents bring infants and small children to movies that the kid will have no interest in and therefore become bored and disruptive. If you HAVE to go to a movie with a kid, at least pick a family friendly movie that the kid will understand and enjoy. Furthermore, if you HAVE to go see Hellboy II and you can't find a baby sitter - reschedule! Maybe mommy and daddy should have thought about the disruption in their movie-watching habits before making a baby. Sounds rude, I know, but really.

I liked Golden Army better than Iron Man. Hellboy felt more like a big movie experiance... Iron Man just felt like "Marvel Blockbuster 08". I'll get another one of those next year, but I don't know the next time I'll see a movie like Hellboy II.

What about a movie BETTER than Hellboy II, say...6 days from now?

I've yet to see this, but definately will when I'm on vacation. The theater where we are going is way better than the one here anyway. Looking forward to it, especially after eStragand has given this a good review, since he was completely spot-on with his Transformers thoughts last summer.

See, that's another thing, Hellboy didn't feel like a comic book movie at all. Which I guess is why I'm having trouble comparing it to Batman, Spiderman or Iron Man. It reminded me most of a movie called Mirrormask (but I haven't seen Pan's Labryinth, so I can't comment on that...). It felt more like a fantasy/epic than a big budget blockbuster.

MirrorMask was good, but it wasn't really movie material. You could almost say the same for Pan's Labyrinth, really.

If I've had any complaint about Hellboy II, having not yet seen it, it's that it looks more like Del Toro than I'm comfortable with

MirrorMask creeped me out, which is weird because I was perfectly okay with Pan's Labyrinth...fucking creepy sphinxes and gorilla penguins...

Honestly, I thought Hellboy 2 was every bit as good as The Dark Knight, though for obviously different reasons. The humor, monsters, action, acting, everything was ace in this one.
