Title: DWB Movie Club
Description: if there'd be any interest...

Metrodome - July 7, 2008 04:42 AM (GMT)
Maybe something to liven it up around here?

DWB Members watching the same movie every week and discussing it?

Basically how this would work is whoever is interested would let me know in this thread, and I'd make an order of who gets to pick the movie of the week. Some of you guys have pretty good sized movie collections, plus with NetFlix, Blockbuster, and the internet, it shouldn't be too difficult to get ahold of at least MOST of the movies.

Thoughts and feedback? Again just say so if you want in...

These Are All Gay! - July 7, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
Why the hell not?

whitemilesdavis - July 7, 2008 01:21 PM (GMT)
I'm in.

SamoaRowe - July 7, 2008 02:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah, this could fun with this group of peeps.

Metrodome - July 7, 2008 03:57 PM (GMT)
List updated. I'll give this awhile before we have our first selection, so everyone who wants in can say so. Probably won't start until after the 20th, as I'm on vacation until then...

SamoaRowe - July 7, 2008 04:18 PM (GMT)
I'm going to be on vacation from around the 15th until the 29th. Feel free to start it without me, I'm willing to catch up.

The Last Free Voice - July 7, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
I can't make any promises, but I'll contribute when I can.

Erick Von Erich - July 7, 2008 04:37 PM (GMT)
I'm sure this club can meet right next to the DWB/NWA club, who are seated next to the "Match of the Week" club....

Hey, that DWB/NWA game lasted a good six months before it died an anticlimatic death.

And where's this match of the week, did I start it, and anyhow, can I get that shit up and running again?

Eh, it's a lot less work to watch a movie and reply with your thoughts than it is to update an EWR diary or whatever...I don't remember the match of the week either.

LFV, you'll have to PM me your movie pick when it is your week to pick, so you'd have to pay at least some attention. I'm not saying you'd have to discuss every movie we watch, but I don't want one of your MIA periods when I'm trying to PM you to get your selection...

EvE, you in?

The Last Free Voice - July 7, 2008 04:55 PM (GMT)
And it could always go the way of the Music Video of the Day thread. Which is still kicking.

EDIT: I'll be around here regularly again. Plus you guys can use the DWS myspace to get a hold of me now too, should something come up.

If you want, we can wait til August. I'm in no hurry to start this, and I aim to please.

Erick Von Erich - July 7, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
I remember some thread-- probably two or three years ago-- where youse guys all wanted to do a "roundtable discussing the best match of the week". People were supposed to pick among the best weekly match on RAW, Smackdown, etc. That match would then get a gold star or some shit and be up for debate in "Match of the Year".

In my experience every "recurring feature" proposed never becomes a regular thread and/or never receives consistent input. I don't know if it's because it seems like "homework" or what, but those always die out.

Jillie - July 7, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)
I'd probably be in on this, but I'm a picky movie watcher (for instance, I refuse to watch Nicolas Cage movies anymore). I'll watch the ones that meet my criteria, though. ;)

The only Nick Cage movies I can stand are Adaptation and Raising Arizona...everything else...terrible.

Howzabout "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"? Okay, so it's kinda' dumb now, but it was edgy and COOL for its time.

And I thought "Amos & Andrew" was kinda' fun.

SamoaRowe - July 7, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
When I was in junior high, I really like Con Air and even Snake Eyes.

Ah, love the movie, forgot he was in it.

Erick Von Erich - July 7, 2008 08:25 PM (GMT)
Nicolas Cage is sort of a box-office pariah nowadays (although his flicks still do good business), but I'll agree with Rowe and openly admit to digging "Con Air" and even "The Rock".

Like all actors, I think it's a little unfair to label all of their movies as universally stinky. Everybody's been in a stinker...and some stinky actors have surprised.

Metrodome - July 7, 2008 08:56 PM (GMT)
And then you have that turd Russell Crowe.

Erick Von Erich - July 7, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
Hey now..I know a few of us on here liked "3:10 to Yuma"

Metrodome - July 7, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
He was good in L.A. Confidential, decent in 3:10, and that's been about it. I know it's not a popular opinion, but Gladiator bored me to death. Don't even get me started on A Beautiful Mind. American Gangster (along with fellow overrated actor Denzel Washington) was too long and neither leading guy did anything to hold my interest. Master and Commander...sucked.

Erick Von Erich - July 7, 2008 09:18 PM (GMT)
Agree 100%, Metro.

I think the issue with Crowe is that, after his breakout starring performance in "Gladiator", he was booked as a main event talent. "A Beautiful Mind" and "Master & Commander" were set up as Oscar vehicles for him.. and they both sucked.

He was just "some dude" before "Gladiator". But Hollywood fell in love with and suddenly thought he was a heavy, like Mel Gibson or something. Also helped that housewife soccer moms were creaming their ho-ho's over the guy, too.

Jillie - July 7, 2008 11:55 PM (GMT)
I've never seen a bad Russell Crow movie, but that's probably because I don't watch chick flicks. He was super in Gladiator and American Gangster. Can't think of another one that he's been in off the top of my head that I've seen...

Con Air ruined Nicolas Cage for me. He was SO bad in it. Then I watched Face Off and now I can't take the man seriously at all. I find the same with Val Kilmer. If I see he's in a movie I think to myself "well, that's going to be cheesy as hell."

On the other hand, I do have my favourites that even if they have a teeny weeny role the movie HAS to be good if they're in the line up. Morgan Freeman, Edward Norton, Forest Whittaker, Julianne Moore, and Jody Foster are all suuuuuuper great. Runners up are Brad Pitt (and no, I don't think he's hot. Well, ok. He's hot. But that's not why he's one of my faves. 12 Monkeys and Snatch is why he's one of my faves), Colin Farrell and Al Pacino.

I hear ya' on Brad Pitt....except I don't think he's hot. Right as he was blowing up and becoming uber-famous in 1995, he popped up in "12 Monkeys" and "Seven" within roughly two months of each other. After seeing him in both of those (especially "12 monkeys"), I liked him and thought : "good for you, bub. Two good movies. Hope ya' get laid!"

Thought the same thing about Mel Gibson, about 10 years earlier, when he suddenly became the big movie hearthrob after "Leathal Weapon". I was thinking: "hey, that's MAX! He's cool and okay with me. I'm glad chicks dig him."

Metrodome - July 8, 2008 06:39 AM (GMT)
The thing with Val Kilmer is, I really don't want to take him seriously, but can still enjoy him. Sure he's great as Doc Holliday in Tombstone, but for me his best roles have been in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Real Genius, and Top Secret...

Metrodome - July 12, 2008 04:53 PM (GMT)
So 6 members isn't too shabby, should be easy enough to get ahold of you all for your picks barring no one falls off the face of the earth.

The way this will work:

*I'm just gonna go with the order that we signed up as far as picks go:
1. Metrodome
2. These Are All Gay!
3. whitemilesdavis
4. SamoaRowe
5. The Last Free Voice
6. Jillie

*Will start on Aug. 1st, so start thinking of ideas.

*A thread for the following week's film will probably open while the previous week's film is still in discussion. This will help people in being able to track down the movie before the discussion begins.

*If anyone else wants to join this along the way, they are welcome to.

*I'm gonna keep a list of our picks, both for convience and because it'll be fun to look back on. I'll hyperlink to the threads of the movie discussions, and also add who picked it.

*When it's you're week to pick, I'll send you a PM asking for the movie you have chosen. I'll then make a thread for discussion of that movie.

*Discussion threads can obviously be done however you want. Full reviews are welcome, as are short posts on what you liked and disliked about the film. I'll post helpful links in each thread, including Wikipedia, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDB pages for the movie chosen.

*Again, please make sure the film you are choosing had a wide release on DVD and is somewhat easy to find, via NetFlix, a videostore, or purchase. Nothing crazy obscure or discussion will obviously be lacking.

Still sounds fun. Not like it's a big commitment or anyhting. And when did Eve turn into jamiegeist?

Watch The Sultan Sea it's great and it's mainly because of Kilmer.

That's The Salton Sea. Phenomenal film, with great work by Kilmer AND Vincent D'onofrio

whitemilesdavis - July 17, 2008 12:21 AM (GMT)
You might want to skip Wonderland. Took what should have been an easy incredible story and made a terrible movie out of it. And Kilmer pretty much sucked in it. He was pretty good as Jim Morrison though.

Jillie - July 17, 2008 03:45 AM (GMT)
Are there going to be any rules about what movies we can pick other than those that are widely available? Like, can we pick a movie that we personally have seen a million times but are looking for an excuse to watch it again? Because I totally have my first movie in mind...

I vote yes. It would allow you to contribute more to the discussion as well.

I vote no porno though.

Hey, that's a good point...

Is there going to be a rating cap or is everyone here of legal age?
