Title: WWE 24/7: Gold Rush (June 2008)

This month's gimmick is "title matches, everywhere you look". Aside from the "Shorties" this month, that's typically true of ANY month.

For perhaps the first time ever, they aired a full Stampede Wrestling episode. From Dec 8, 1979....it kinda' sucked. No matches aired in their entirety, but I think that was the norm for Stampede. Main event featured none other than Frenchy Martin, under his old ringname of "Don Gagne". For a one-time airing, it was garbage. But if they keep 'em coming (in order), it'd be entertaining.

They also just finished airing WCW Great American Bash 1992. For an all-around wrestling show, it was very good. Bad guys didn't really cheat to win, they just beat someone up, capitalized on an "injury", then pinned 'em.

Sounds good. I wish I could get 24/7.

Still unavailable on your cable?

Rowe, you're getting the online version of 24/7, right? Do they have similar themes and selections each month? Or is it a static archive of shows?

SamoaRowe - June 12, 2008 08:02 PM (GMT)
Yep, still unavailable for my current cable deal. I can barely afford the cable I currently use, I can't upgrade to the package that includes onDemand channels.

I just started using 24/7 Online. That's what I'm using to fuel those old school Raw reviews. They have set features every month (J.R.'s pick, Wrestling Hotbeds, The History of the IC title, 1993 Raw's) but there's also a random bunch of stuff added. The other night I watched a random DDP match (can't even remember his opponent) from a late 90's Nitro. That might give you an example of some of the random stuff.

If there's anything you REALLY want, drop me a line, pumpkin. I've been occasionally hooking up some dirtbag in Florida with the random 24/7 DVD-R disc.

For instance, would you want (and hopefully review) some RAW episodes from 1997?

YES!

PM me your demands.

They dug deep and aired an old episode of WWWF Championship Wrestling from 1979. Main event had a tag title match between champs Tony Gonnorhea and Larry Zbyszko vs. Johnny & Jerry Valiant (w/Handsome Jimmy).

After the Valiants win, they return for a ringside promo. Johnny's looking sloshed, wearing an ill-fitting Yankees cap and thick black-rimmed glasses that make him look like Harry Caray.

Oh, and Rowe's theory about 70's wrestlers looking like porn stars holds true. There's a poofy-haired guy named "Flying Fred Curry" (NOT the guitarist from Cinderella) who looks like he's received bukkaki on film.

Caught King of the Ring 1994, last night. Aside from a screwy run-in finish during the Bret Hart/Diesel match, I was surprised at how entertaining the show was. I usually dread all mid-90's WWF crap, but this was quite good.

Art Donovan's inane commentary was good for a laugh, too. "Wait..where's the ref going with the belt?! He stole it!". To which Macho Man replies: "it's okay, he's supposed to take the belt, it still belongs to Bret the Hitman Hart". I felt bad for Donovan, because his schtick at the time was rambling free-form monologues. Gorilla and Macho Man just did their thing and kinda' pushed him out. The poor guy should've been sent to the back after one or two matches.

Oh yeah, never knew that they got the guy from BLACKFOOT ("Traaaaain! Train!") to sing the National Anthem. So random, I had to dig it.

In "shorties", I was psyched to see they listed "Flair vs. Garvin"-- the match where Ronnie Garvin beats Flair for the NWA World Title. But, they only showed the final two minutes of the match....then 10 minutes of follow-up promos from the TBS show. What a waste. The match had a pretty cool finish (Garvin lands a sunset flip from the top turnbuckle to pin Flair), so it sucked that it was skipped over.
