Title: MD's Wacky World of Virtual Console

Mad Dog - September 4, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
This might turn into a blog eventually but for now I'll post my thoughts on the week's newly released VC games for the Wii. It'll be a straight up thumbs up, in the middle or down system.

9/3:

NES - Adventure Island

You have fond memories of this game, I have fond memories of this game. Well don't believe them. Sometimes memories and nostalgia are best left in the past. The sequels are far superior to this game.

Thumbs down

NES - Donkey Kong Jr. Math

Another in a long line of shitty Donkey Kong games released on the NES. If you even consider buying this game just tell me and I'll punch you in the face.

Thumbs down

Genesis - Landstalker

A forgotten action RPG on the Genesis system. A very solid game and worth a look if you accept that it's dated by today's standards and that it won't be the greatest thing ever. On a scale of 1-10 it would be around a 7.

Thumbs up

T16 - Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure

The Bonk games are usually worth the $6. If you're a Bonk fan I'd say get it, if not probably just avoid it.

Thumbs in the middle

Overall Thoughts:

Not a week that has a game I'm real passionate about and a step down from the quality we'd seen since about mid-July on the VC. I'd give the week as a whole thumbs in the middle. Landstalker is solid enough to drag the average up a bit.

Another week and 3 more games to the happy VC library. So here we go.

9/10:

NES Play Action Football

I am not a fan of this game at all. I just remember passing being hard as hell in this game. I believe this game has a fanbase, it just wasn't for me.

Thumbs down.

Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog 3

This is without a doubt the best of the Sonic games ever. I remember loving this game when I started playing it. Though I recommend going out and buying the Sonic collection for $20 and getting all the games instead of just paying $8 for this.

Thumbs up.

TG-16 - Neutopia II

This is a pretty shameless Zelda rip off. I've heard good things about it but never played it and don't plan to. So we'll just N/A this one.

Overall thoughts:

The streak of good weeks continue on the VC. I'll be starting to keep track of the streak good or bad and keeping a last 10 weeks as a record. So we're at +2 and 2-0 as far as these writings go.

Mad Dog - September 11, 2007 12:48 AM (GMT)
The top 10 stays the same. Sonic 3 would be 11 or 12 on the list in case you were curious.

SamoaRowe - September 11, 2007 11:24 AM (GMT)
Paper Mario was awesome, indeed. I'm tempted to download it and replay it (borrowed the N64 cartridge back in the day).

prof_plague - September 11, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
Toejam and Earl is simply one of the greatest games...EVER~~~~~!!!!!!

Knuckles' Chaotix is left out of the collection, most likely simply because "Sonic" is not in the title.

I'm nostalgic for Knuckles' Chaotix and was hoping that it'd be in the collection. Unfortunately, no-one seems to remember the game because it was only released on 32X and had mixed reviews when it came out.

It's worth it. The game holds up really well but then it's not that old to begin with.

Better late than never says I. Sorry, I've been sick and have just been wiped out after work every night. So let's get to the show this week. An oddball week this time around as there isn't any NES games for download. The last time that happened was back in June.

N64 - Yoshi's Story

What can I say about this game. NOT WORTH IT. This was not a very good sequel to Super Mario World II. It was way too easy and just lackluster in general. I wouldn't call it bad but it's not good either. At $10 the game is not worth it at all. You might as well just go get Super Mario World II for the GBA for a bit more and get the superior game.

THUMBS DOWN

Genesis - Super Thunder Blade

This is a shooter styled game. Really this game is just there. If you wanted a solid 8 or 16 bit era shooter there are about 30 good to great ones I can throw out there before I'd even consider this. Save your money and get Space Harrier or R-Type III for the SNES. You'll be much happier.

THUMBS DOWN

TG-16 - World Class Baseball

This is another one of those "why would you buy this when all these other better games are out there?" kind of game. In fairness to this game it's probably the best baseball game on Virtual Console but then it's really only competing against Baseball for the NES which sucks balls. So we'll give it...

THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Overall Thoughts:
A shitty week finally kills the hot streak we had been enjoying since August. Can't win them all I guess. Hopefully they start getting some of the heavy hitters like Super Mario RPG and Super Mario III on there for the holiday season. So -1 on the streaks and 2-1 so far for this. See you next week.

Mad Dog - September 26, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)
A quick round for this week:

Kirby's Avalanche: Thumbs Up

Streets of Rage 3: Thumbs Down

Legend of Hero Tonma: N/A

So we'll say it's a good week just barely to get us to a +1 streak and we're looking at a 3-1 record since I started.

This week was Mario Lost Levels which sucks and an import which never saw release here before. I'm going to download it over the weekend and see if it's any good.

ProjectSelfRevolution - October 4, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
Lost Levels was pretty fun. I remember playing it on Super Mario Bros. All Star for the SNES. Great times.

I'm emulating it, along with the rest of Super Mario All-Stars- the SNES game that had Super Mario Brothers, the American Super Mario Brothers 2, Lost Levels, and Super Mario Brothers 3.

Its good. But its hard as shit.

Mad Dog - October 4, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
My thing with it is I hate games that are hard just for the sake of being hard. As in there are things that are unfair and totally fuck you over and there's little you can do about it.

Mad Dog - October 8, 2007 11:12 PM (GMT)
This week is all Neo-Geo games which I have not played. So no reviews.

Mad Dog - October 17, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
This week features Ninja Gaiden II and Metal Marines. Both are easy thumbs up and the ways pretty much go without saying.

Mad Dog - October 24, 2007 05:13 AM (GMT)
A new week and new releases. Let's see what we've got.

On the NES we have Lunar Pool and Ninja Jajamaru-kun. Lunar Pool is a pool game. I'm not really a fan of the genre to be honest. So I'll pass on that. Ninja Jajamaru-kun is another translated import. From what I know of the game it's pretty awful. So pass on that one.

Over on the Genesis you have Golden Axe III. I've played the game before and I remember liking I and II a lot better for whatever reason. It's hard to say if it's a good or bad game as I think I was just burned out on them rehashing the game over and over again. So whatever. Just go get that Genesis Classics game for PS2 for like $20 and get this and a bunch of other games for cheap.

Yeah, so a pretty crappy week for me personally. It's probably good for someone if Golden Axe III and Lunar Pool light their fire.

They really need to fucking get Pro Wrestling released. I want it. It can't be had for cheap elsewhere and it hasn't been collected to death. Plus, it's easily top 10 ever for wrestling video games.

Mad Dog - November 2, 2007 01:25 PM (GMT)
Castlevania II this week. If you own a Wii buy it now or I'll hunt you down and buy it for you.

Mad Dog - November 6, 2007 05:06 AM (GMT)
Super Mario 3 this week. Some consider this the best Mario game ever. I do not though. I consider World and 64 to be superior games but this game is still fucking awesome. My top 10 has yet to change really. Mario 3 would probably be running at 11th or 12th on the list.

Whatever happened to the Koopa Kids. Seems they were becoming standard but then got dropped after Mario World and haven't been seen again.

Also go out and by the craptacular Super Mario 3 cartoon on DVD at a local DVD type place near you.

SamoaRowe - November 6, 2007 01:48 PM (GMT)
Haha, I was looking at that DVD set last night, feeling tempted. I remember a handful of episodes from when I was a kid, but it's not a show that I get seriously nostalgic over.

The S.S. Nintendo - November 6, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
I bought the Super Mario Bros. 3 DVD. Yes, the show may be corny, but I liked it.

By the way, download Alien Soldier. That's also one of this week's releases. If you never heard of it, it was on the Japan-only Mega Drive, or if you had the Sega Channel.
