Title: The New AWA Champion
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 01:39 PM (GMT)
Takao Omori won the AWA Title last night.

That belt looks like shit IMO. I don't know if I really care as the AWA has basically been a joke since the early 80s. I also can't take a belt seriously that was once held by Evan Karagias.
Scrooge McSuck - January 24, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't say the AWA was a joke until around 1985-86 when Vince had finished scooping up everyone that had talent and leaving a lot of green wrestlers and people past their primes.
Big F'N Swigg - January 24, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
You know, I can understand wanting to keep the old belt for tradition, but this is getting ridiculous. Between this and the NWA belt, I'm really disappointed.
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
I actually like the NWA belt.
Big F'N Swigg - January 24, 2005 03:05 PM (GMT)
I can't understand that, but OK
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
I like it because it's unique and it gives a sense of tradition. Though I admit I would feel differently if the belt sucked in the first place. I would rather they keep it then failing at making a new belt. I think going with the older style World and Tag belts was a good idea. I would prefer the big gold belt but that won't happen.
Big F'N Swigg - January 24, 2005 03:12 PM (GMT)
I have to admit that I'd be afraid that Jarrett would have a belt made with guitars on it or something like that.
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 03:15 PM (GMT)
The other reason I like it is because most Indy belts look like the old I.C. title just slightly altered.
Scrooge McSuck - January 24, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
The NWA belt looks OLD SCHOOL~!, and NWA-TNA was suppose to be about "Tradition" until that went out the window 5 weeks into the companies run.
TehDoct0r - January 24, 2005 04:47 PM (GMT)
I thougt Vince had the AWA's footage and rights and stuff. Does the mean he doesn't?
And yea, I dig the old school NWA belt.
whitemilesdavis - January 24, 2005 04:56 PM (GMT)
Vince does own the old footage and what-not. He apparently didn't care about the rights to the name as one of the Gagne's (Dale?) is promoting this whole thing.
NWA belt = cool
That AWA belt is horrible.
So, is Omori any good? I've never heard of him.
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 05:10 PM (GMT)
Omori is good with the right opponent. He has some cool moves but usually depends on his opponent to string the match together.
whitemilesdavis - January 24, 2005 05:15 PM (GMT)
Which AWA affiliate does he wrestle for? I know the new AWA affiliate here in the Carolinas (CWF) is pretty much wretched.
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 05:23 PM (GMT)
He wrestles mostly for NOAH but also appears for Zero-One.
dynamite kido - January 24, 2005 05:23 PM (GMT)
Zero One Max bought the right's for the AWA titles and name......

The finals to fill the vacant AWA World Heavyweight Championship saw the following tournament results from a sold out Korekuen Hall, in Tokyo, Japan:

AWA Title Tournament (3-way match): Takao Omori defeated Kensuke Sasaki & Kohei Sato in 8 minutes, 8 seconds when Omori used an Axe Bomber on Sato for the win and advance to the finals.
AWA Title Tournament Finals: Takao Omori defeated Steve Corino in 24 minutes, 53 seconds with the Axe Bomber to become the 32nd AWA World Heavyweight Champion. |

Yeah, that would be Zero-One. I'm trying to find a review on the match since it was Corino and all. :D
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 05:36 PM (GMT)
The decision still confuses me because everyone knows it's going around Corino's waist sooner than later.
dynamite kido - January 24, 2005 06:09 PM (GMT)
WOW, I didn't realize that they were going to do the tourney in that fashion.....that's fucking horrible.
whitemilesdavis - January 24, 2005 06:28 PM (GMT)
That does look rather bad, as they could have had some good match-ups among the six guys in the tourney. The stills of the show look pretty strong, but then again everything at Korekuen Hall has that majestic kind of look to it. I'd like to see the final match, but that's about it.

So they can use the belt and the name, but Vince can still use the footage on his 24/7 thing if he wants. Sounds good.
Scrooge McSuck - January 24, 2005 07:33 PM (GMT)
Vince owns the tape library of Gagne's AWA. He does not own the actual name. Simple as that, eh?
Mad Dog - January 24, 2005 08:08 PM (GMT)
I guess Vince didn't want to shell out the extra $20 to get the rights to the name.
Scrooge McSuck - January 24, 2005 08:10 PM (GMT)
Maybe he didn't care enough to get into a legal scuffle over $19.49 + Tax. Vince owns all the NWA/WCW footage from the JCP NWA, but he doesn't own the name NWA.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense in this topic, but it just proves you can own the footage without owning the actual name.

You wasted time to mock everyone repeating themselves? For shame Willie.

Actually, according to the AWA's website, Zero-One is an AWA affiliate. They won the rights to the AWA title tournament.
And yes Dale Gagne runs the AWA, and Vince owns the classic footage but not the name.
whitemilesdavis - January 25, 2005 01:47 AM (GMT)
So vince can use the footage, but Dale Gagne can still use the name? Great.
dynamite kido - January 25, 2005 10:31 PM (GMT)
Best. Picture. Ever

prof_plague - January 26, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
The AWA title belt is the original, traditional title belt. Think back to the title belts of the early 60s.
SamoaRowe - January 27, 2005 02:45 PM (GMT)
That Corino/Amori match must've been great. I haven't seen Amori perform (yet) but he has great stats in EWR.
Scrooge McSuck - January 27, 2005 05:51 PM (GMT)
I'm 99.99999999995% sure his name is Omori. :D And I've only seen him wrestle once (vs. Ken Shamrock in NWA-TNA) and the match was quite shitty.
SamoaRowe - January 27, 2005 07:13 PM (GMT)
Hehe, my bad.
Shitty, you say? That's disappointing, maybe he improved since.
Scrooge McSuck - January 27, 2005 07:14 PM (GMT)
He looked bad in the 1996 Rumble match too?
dynamite kido - January 27, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
Omori is actually not bad at all. Personally, I would put him above Corino as far as in ring work. He's pretty much been a solid tag wrestler in Japan for quite sometime now.
Mad Dog - January 27, 2005 10:55 PM (GMT)
Corino is just bland to me in the ring. He's always bored me to tears even after his supposed revival in Zero-One a few years ago.
