Title: WWE 24/7: Latino Legends (May 07)

eStragand - May 2, 2007 06:50 AM (GMT)
Regular updates, with new TNT, MNW and CWF.

But the big thing is the "When Worlds Collide" show. A lucha card from 1994, with Eddie, Pegasus Kid and and more stuff.

Also, a house show from LA in December 1988. Bossman vs. Hogan, Herc vs. DiBiase and Demos vs Power of Pain. They don't seem to show alot of 1988-1992 stuff ("my" era), so I'm pumped for that one.

Oh yeah...in keeping with the lucha theme (as in, not at all) the "Legends" spotlight is on Pedro Morales.

dynamite kido - May 2, 2007 01:00 PM (GMT)
Well at least there's one of the greatest tag matches of all time on When Worlds Collide.

Big F'N Swigg - May 2, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
I saw When Worlds Collide about a year ago, and it made me want to see more of Art Barr

Scrooge McSuck - May 2, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
That hair vs. masks tag match on WWC is probably one of the greatest tag matches I've ever seen, and I had no previous emotional commitment to it.

dynamite kido - May 2, 2007 08:06 PM (GMT)
Now I personally think that the greatest tag matches ever happened in All Japan in the 1990's and I think that match is basically on par with anything that was done there. Now THAT is saying a lot.

Mad Dog - May 2, 2007 10:16 PM (GMT)
Why the fuck do they jump around on their fucking CWF shows?

eStragand - May 2, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
They did the same with the AWA series. My guess is that they want more of a sampling of the territory. Like: "whoa, all these BIG NAMES were in there at one time". But their selection so far has been quite mystifying. The shows they have shown haven't been homeruns at all.

Mad Dog - May 2, 2007 10:58 PM (GMT)
The one on right now isn't so bad but the episode this one was recapping seemed to be a lot more eventful.

Mad Dog - May 2, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
Oh, those fucking douchebags. Right in the middle of the fucking main event the show ends.

eStragand - May 3, 2007 04:19 AM (GMT)
Yup. That seems to be typical, huh?

Most of the recaps they've shown were from their weekend houseshows. I don't think they've had any nifty in-studio matches, yet.

It's fun for a sampling and to hear Gordon Solie... but the in-ring stuff has been garbage.

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2007 11:06 AM (GMT)
CWF is batting 1 for whatever-the-fuck, and that's only because the 1 "good" show was matches from the 1987 Great American Bash tour.

Big F'N Swigg - May 3, 2007 03:14 PM (GMT)
Two good matches on Nitro so far: Jerry Lynn(as J.L.) vs. Chavo, and a great match between Eddie Guerrero & Dean Malenko

Scrooge McSuck - May 3, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
The latter shouldn't be much of a surprise. I think Eddie and Dean were incapable of having a bad match together, even if they tried to.

Mad Dog - May 3, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
Well that Morales/Murraco match sucked balls. I'm never ceased to be amazed by how utterly gawd awful Morales was as a worker.

Big F'N Swigg - May 4, 2007 05:57 PM (GMT)
I can not understand how Demolition got over.

eStragand - May 4, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
They kicked people's stinkin' teeth in.

Duh.

Big F'N Swigg - May 4, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
I never got to see that, so maybe I should watch some more of the classic stuff

EDIT: Every time I see them, I just see two middle aged balding fat guys in S&M attire. It's a little creepy to me

dynamite kido - May 4, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
If you would have grown up watching them you would know why people dig em.

Now, I agree. They do look like two balding dudes in S&M gear so I see what you're saying.

Big F'N Swigg - May 4, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
I remember seeing them as a kid and thinking "they look like tough guys." But they were right before my time, so I only saw them maybe a handful of times

eStragand - May 4, 2007 08:24 PM (GMT)
With the exception of the Adonis/Murdoch team, there wasn't really a "tough, brawlin' team" in the WWF's 80's heyday (1983-1990). So in that regard, Demolition was different.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend their July 1989 SNME 2/3 title match against the BrainBusters. That's probably the be-all/end-all of good Demolition matches.

Scrooge McSuck - May 4, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
Demolition had a good aura around them, but they were pretty lame as babyfaces. From around the Fall of '87 through their face turn a year later was their peek. I still enjoy some of their face run stuff, but not a lot, and once Crush came in...

Mad Dog - May 4, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
They were pretty solid workers and were an oddity at the time since the Mania-era wrestling fan hadn't really seen a badass heel tag team before. Plus Strikeforce was a fucking lame team and it was easy to root for the bad guys to eat them. Now they did start to slide work wise once they went face. This was a combination of having no good opponents and the health of Bill Eadie starting to slowly decline. I'd argue he was the one that really made the whole thing work. Nothing against Darsow. He just wasn't the worker that Eadie was.

eStragand - May 6, 2007 09:47 PM (GMT)
I watched the December 1988 house show from the LA Sports Arena last night. I happened to think: was this the show that Big Bossman, Slick and Akeem were hyping on the Arsenio Hall show?!

I was suprised that Superstar Billy Graham was on commentary. I thought he had left the WWF about two months earlier.

Funny interview where Rod Traumgard introduces Hercules as "Hercules Cortez". Herc looks pissed and starts singalling time out. Traumgard is oblivious to the whole thing and continues with the interview.

About halfway through the Sherri-Rockin' Robn match, I started thinking: "damn, those tights really fit Sherri". Then I splashed water on myself.

And you guys DO know that Demolition's costumes were taken from both "The Beastmaster" and "Road Warrior", right? The masks from "Beastmaster" and the outfits from Lord Humongous--- ruler of the wasteland and ayatollah of rock and rolla. Fear is our ally.

Mad Dog - May 6, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
I watched that show yesterday. I'd give it a solid B-. Some solid matches and they gave everyone a lot of time. Poor Powers really got his ass handed to him on there though.

Scrooge McSuck - May 7, 2007 11:54 AM (GMT)
Good.

whitemilesdavis - May 7, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
I never could get over the LOD ripoff. Just bothered me as a kid. Had I known at the time that Eadie had been the masked Superstar, I might've given them a chance.

eStragand - May 12, 2007 08:46 PM (GMT)
Everybody had the LOD rip-offs back then. Well, except the AWA who kept running with the prettyboy babyface mullet teams. I think the Nasty Boys even did an LOD rip-off at one point, circa 1988.

Watched the 5/18/87 Prime Time last night. Another good lineup for a PTW episode, and there were hardly any filler matches. Nick Kiniski vs. Frenchie Martin went on WAY too long, but it was interesting because I never knew Kiniski was in the WWF. Much less on TV.

The Patera/Heenan angle got good exposure with a Patera/Hercules match. It's still amazing how everybody NOT named "Patera" got that angle over. There's also an Islanders/Demos match and even a watchable 6-man with the Bulldogs/ Santana vs. the All-Star Jobber Team (Jimmy Jack Funk, the Gladiator & Barry O).

Oh yes....and Iron Mike Sharpe wins a match!! Yarrrrgh!!

Studio segments are great. Heenan does his famous midget line. "I told Bundy: never touch a midget, you don't know where they've been". The camera crew can he heard, laughing, off-screen.

The S.S. Nintendo - May 12, 2007 09:18 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. Don't have the Prime Time on mine. Ah well, I was satisfied enough watching the Mysterio/Psychosis match and the December '88 L.A. Sports Arena card.

Big F'N Swigg - May 12, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
I loved Mikey Whipwreck's "Training" on ECW

eStragand - May 12, 2007 11:47 PM (GMT)
Is that the segment with Public Enemy and the ladder? Where Johnny gets shitfaced by chugging a six-pack. Haven't watched that episode yet, but yeah, it's fun. It was also on the Rise & Fall of ECW DVD.

SSN-- If you'd like that PTW episode, I can mail you a copy. Most of the 80's stuff I end up recording.

Don't have to worry about that. I wasn't really paying attention to what I have, and yes, I do have said episode of PTW.

Scrooge McSuck - May 14, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
Dumas. :D

I barely watch my 24/7 anymore. I make sure to catch the old PTW/TNT and arena shows, but that's been pretty much it.

dynamite kido - May 14, 2007 05:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I haven't had a chance to watch a lot on there lately myself.

eStragand - May 15, 2007 01:05 AM (GMT)
The "When Worlds Collide Show" was pretty good. Well, "good" for Lucha. I liked how Mike Tenay and Chris Cruise would take time to explain the little nuances and Weird Shit of the characters, history and matches. For instance, I've probably seen dozens of Konnan matches, but I never knew how he got his ring name, or that he was a Cuban immigrant and a boxer in the US Navy.

Was Fuerza Guerrera Juvy's real dad, or just his kayfabe dad?

It sounded like the show was put on by WCW, as the announcers plugged "Clash of the Champions" on TBS. Did they do any others, and was this show promoted on WCW telecasts?

Oh yeah- I need to change the title of this thread, as it's not "Lucha Libre", but "Latino Legends". So in that regard, Perdo Morales is 100% appropriate.

dynamite kido - May 15, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
I'm pretty sure he's Juvi's real dad. At least that's what I've always heard.

I don't think they ever did any other of the shows. Hell, I don't even think the show was promoted by WCW, they just owned the rights. It has something to do with Eric Bishoff promoting some of this stuff though to get AAA guys in WCW.

eStragand - May 15, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
The 24/7 preview announces the show as "WCW: When Worlds Collide". But no WCW logos were used on the event. I'm sure it was part of the WCW video library, so that's probably why the WWE 24/7 production team is billing it as such.

I also thought it was some cross-promotion to get those guys in WCW. But the date was November 1994, and most of those guys didn't make it into WCW until much later. Benoit and Eddy went to ECW a few months after the show and made it to WCW in September 1995 or so. Mysterio and Konan didn't arrive until mid-1996. Juvy and Psicosis until fall 1996.

Now that I think about it, most of the guys went to ECW after this (was Juvy ever in ECW?)

Nonetheless, it took awhile to get all of the mexicans working visas and for Bishoff to convince people it was a good idea. While they were in the states they would be brought into ECW and shortly thereafter they ended up in WCW.

Juvi was also in ECW in 95. I believe he and Rey had a Mexican Death Match in ECW that I can remember.

The 11/15/85 TNT episode was awful. One of the studio guests was TIGER CHUNG LEE. He runs through an obviously scripted introduction, where they try to goof on Alfred Hayes for using a feminine word.

Then they show an old clip from about 1981 or so, with Fred Blassie and Vince hyping up Lee's ability to chop bricks with his hands. Lee tries several times and can't do it. Vince and Blassie start cracking up as the segment ends.

There's some goof in the live TNT crowd wearing a sherpa hat. He keeps trying to pop his head into the camera while flapping the tassles on his hat.
