Title: I watched some old WCW
Description: Thanks to Hollywood Video
Big F'N Swigg - January 22, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
I rented a WCW video from Hollywood Video last night, and here are some things that made me think:
1. In a Nasty Boys vs Steiners match, both sides cheated. But neither side used their cheating to win. Both instances involved using a steel chair, but the Nasty Boys did it b/c they were about to lose and needed to stay alive. The Steiners used it for the same reason, but to lessen the Nasty Boys advantage. It was almost refreshing to see someone cheat without winning as a result.,
2. Sting no-sold. A-lot. But, as my best friend has pointed out, it's part of his gimmick. Is that necessarily a good thing? It's the only problem I have with his matches.
3. Were there as many gimmick matches in old school NWA as it seems? Here's why: If there were, then I'm not as bothered by TNA's gimmick a plenty cards.
Mad Dog - January 22, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
The NWA was pretty gimmick filled during Dusty's run as booker.
Sting was kind of weird with the no selling. He seemed to go through phases where he'd sell everything and then others where he'd sell nothing.

Instances where Sting no selling was FUCKING AWESOME...
1. vs. Sid Vicious @ Halloween Havoc '90. He gets worked over... and pops right up, which is something you would expect from Sid.
2. vs. Hollywood Hogan @ Starrcade '97. Sting absolutely no sells everything, which is kinda cool when it's against Hogan.

That match and "FUCKING AWESOME" just don't go together. At all.
Want something where Hogan gets no sold and it kicks ass? Goldberg's title win.
Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2005 05:08 PM (GMT)
Fuck Goldberg and his talentless, charismaless, dickheaded ass. I'm glad Jericho punked his ass in 2003 backstage.
TehDoct0r - January 22, 2005 06:09 PM (GMT)
I don't like Goldberg either, but that Hogan/Goldberg match was the most perfectly booked piece of television WCW did in the Nitro era, the only possible exception being the nWo Bash at the Beach thing or the promo on Nitro right after. Heenan, Tenay, and even Tony fuckin Schivone (who I usually despise) were FLAWLESS on the announcing end. Goldberg did his schtick on the way to the ring, but with a little less animalistic-ness, and it made the match seem all the more important, like he was actually thinking about it (in the vein of Warrior WALKING to the ring at WM7 instead of running). And Hogan was more perfect than perfect. The way he tried to come across as cocky and confident to Goldberg, but at the same time you KNEW he was shitting his pants was just awesome to watch. And how at the end, when he was concerned even AFTER he had dropped the leg drop of doom, it was the biggest rub he could possibly give to Goldberg. And like it or not, at that time, it was exactly what WCW needed. Plus the crowd was hotter than hot.

Except for the several people throwing trash in the ring at Goldberg... but you have a point.
TehDoct0r - January 22, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
Yea, I did see the TP thing. Or was that a streamer? It looked like TP.
Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2005 07:11 PM (GMT)
TP... definitely TP. I've had a lot of experience with TP (flashes back to 19 years worth of bathroom visits). Those were the days...

Swiggy, since you didn't mention it......what shows did you watch?
Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2005 09:31 PM (GMT)
If he's correct with the old WCW comment, it might be Halloween Havoc 1990 (I think they fought at 1 another show during that time though). I'm not sure if the Steiners ever fought the Nasties on PPV during the Nasty Boys' 2nd WCW run.
Big F'N Swigg - January 22, 2005 10:33 PM (GMT)
Actually, it was a WCW made compilation of a few "Grudge" matches.
It included Dusty & Sting vs The Road Warriors, Flair vs Sting, Steiners vs Nasty Boys, a Bunkhouse Stampede match and Magnum TA vs Tully Blanchard in a steel cage

I thought his no selling in the rematch on Nitro was a million times better. It was great when he just starts beating his chest and screaming and Hogan looks like he's about to piss himself from fear.
Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2005 10:59 PM (GMT)
I must add in, though, that they were mainly awesome because of who he was facing (people who have a reputation of being the biggest no-sellers ever).
Yes, that no-sell was awesome too, by the way.

That's the one with the broken chair, right? I like that match. :D

Probably the best "fence" cage match in the US of all time.

a.k.a The I Quit Match for the United States Title at Starrcade 1985, available on BloodBaths DVD. Awesome match, and very brutal.
dynamite kido - January 23, 2005 04:49 AM (GMT)
It's matches like that that honestly make me wish NWA never folded when it did.
Scrooge McSuck - January 23, 2005 04:51 AM (GMT)
But on the other hand, it's matches like El Gigante vs. Sid Vicious that makes me happy they did. It's give and take really.
I think they were still using the NWA name in May 1991... Oh well, makes me glad WCW died at least.

Those are two totally different eras............and I would have realized that age 10 that I wouldn't waste my time watching that match. I admit marking out for Sid from time to time, but even the mark in me hated Gigante.

War Games makes me miss NWA/WCW too. Best. Gimmick Match. Ever... when booked properly.
Big F'N Swigg - January 23, 2005 05:00 AM (GMT)
I really miss old school NWA. If only TNA were more like old school NWA.

What does everyone think of the intitial WCW/nWo War Games match? With all the Sting shenanigans? I only ask because I'm in the process of downloading it.
Mad Dog - January 23, 2005 05:38 AM (GMT)
It's funny watching old NWA. The inring work was completely cutting edge compared to the WWF. Even moreso when you realize that it took the WWF 5-6 years to catch up. Muta was doing moonsaults and suicide dives while WWF guys were barely climbing the top rope.

That Bunkhouse Stampede made my head hurt. A battle royal in a steel cage is something I wouldn't have even done as a kid w/ my action figures . . . or even now w/ my action figures.

You FINALLY posted. Good for you... now make me more tapes, prank monkey.
