Title: For you baseball card collectors...
Big F'N Swigg - March 2, 2007 06:54 PM (GMT)
This is your new missionIt'll either be priceless or worthless.
eStragand - March 2, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
Wow..that looks like a shitty Photoshop job. Very shoddy work. Probably a hoax. I'd be shocked if someone at Topps actually did that.
On a nother note, is that what Topps baseball cards look like this year? Yuck.
Big F'N Swigg - March 2, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
They say it made it to print.
Of course, the dude who did that is probably canned already
eStragand - March 2, 2007 07:04 PM (GMT)
Hokey smoke. It exists! Just checked eBay and they're going for anywhere from 15 to 145 bucks!
It's 1989 all over again. "Fuck Face" Billy Ripken is rolling over in his grave!
Scrooge McSuck - March 2, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Eh? What's this about Billy Ripken?
Big F'N Swigg - March 2, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
If I remember correctly, his bat had "Fuck Face" written on it on the card.
Scrooge McSuck - March 2, 2007 07:15 PM (GMT)
... Awesome. Now Billy is famous in my book for something other than being the untalented brother of Cal Jr.
eStragand - March 2, 2007 07:33 PM (GMT)
HUGE in 1989, it was the infamous "Fleer 1989 Ripken Error". Sold for 150 bucks and drove kids and investors insane.
This page has the dealie-o and a picture:
http://www.homeruncards.com/rookiecards/bi...rror-card.shtmlAdding to the insanity was that Fleer then released two more "corrected" versions. One had a white box over the words and a second had black strike-throughs over the words. For a short while, the "corrected" versions sold higher than the error. This really spiked the sportscard boom in 1989-1990.
Search for "Billy Ripken Error" on eBay and you can find 'em for about a couple bucks. The original is the most coveted, the corrections are about 50 cents each.
Everytime guys in my age range would see Billy Ripken, we'd immediately say "hey, it's Fuck Face!"
Scrooge McSuck - March 2, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
Big F'N Swigg - March 2, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
I'd love to have been the guy writing "Fuck Face" on his bat.
Real F'n Show - March 2, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
While we're on the topic of Jeter cards, how much does a "Draft Picks" card put out by Classics go for these days? It's a shiny silver and features Jeter in a maroon Kansas City uni and says it was printed in 1992...
eStragand - March 2, 2007 11:37 PM (GMT)
I see it for 1.25 on eBay, right now
In the words of Penn & Teller,
Is THIS your card?Classics really bombed. They originally were part of some boardgame and didn't have wide distribution. They put out a bunch of rookie and draft picks sets in the early 90's and they never had much of a demand. I think another company took 'em over around 1994 or so.
I have a 1992 Classic pro football draft picks set somewhere. It was hot for about a week because it had David Klingler and Jarrod Bunch.
Real F'n Show - March 2, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
That's not exactly it but it's pretty similar, most likely from the same series. In mine he looks to be about ready to field a grounder.
Real F'n Show - March 2, 2007 11:46 PM (GMT)
This one.Worth a lousy dollar. What's sad is that like all my sports cards I still have are the Classics brand because that's all my dad ever bought me...
eStragand - March 3, 2007 12:27 AM (GMT)
Don't feel bad. I have entire cases (not just boxes--- a big 4 foot by 2 foot box with about 36 boxes) of Pro Set football from 1990.
Sportscards should be my next eBay adventure. When I would deal comics in the late 80's, I quickly found out that cards were cheaper, returned a higher profit and took up less space. I still have some of those "Michael Jordan White Sox cards" from 1991 which still go for a few bucks.
Real F'n Show - March 3, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
There's gotta be SOME Classic cards that are worth something though, right? I have tons of baseball, basketball, and football ones. I don't suppose there's a free price guide online, is there?
I really should start buying baseball cards again...
S.T. Strickler - March 3, 2007 01:03 AM (GMT)
Beckett online price guide is sorta free, if you can figure out how much the cards are worth when it's added to your collection. Other than that, pony up the money.

We thank you for particpating in this thread and certainly hope that you read the previous posts!
I don't put alot of stock in price guides, though. Especially on post-1980 cards. The old adage of "it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it" is very pertinent to sportscards. If you're ever serious about selling a card, check eBay for completed listings and you'll get a good sense of what it can net ya'.
Otherwise, you can rest easy knowing that your cards are worth exactly what you paid for 'em in the first place.

I have that card too. I also have a Topps draft picks card with Jeter AND Chipper Jones.
Yeah, that's right. M-O-N-E-Y.
eStragand - March 3, 2007 05:24 AM (GMT)
Heyyy..I think some Classic cards are semi-valuable. They made the 1989 WWF cards. They're pretty rare and you can sell most cards for at least a buck.
S.T. Strickler - March 3, 2007 02:10 PM (GMT)
I got some old WCW cards from around '89.

I have some of them shit... I used to have like 8 Bad News Brown cards. :P
eStragand - March 4, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
They're more novelty items, but you could definitely sell 'em to the right people. I had a few "Widowmaker" Barry Windham cards that would sell for curiousity's sake.
Okay, so I picked up some 2007 Topps cards at Wal-Mart last night. I got a Derek Jeter card!!! Well, okay...so I got the Rawlings Gold Glove Award Winner Jeter card.
Anyways, there's some weird stuff on these cards. I got cards of Royce Clayton and Daryle Ward... in their new jerseys. Clayton and Ward have yet to play for the BlueJays or Cubs respectively, but each is pictured in the field, in his new uniform. Unless Topps grabbed shots of Clayton and Ward last week, immediately produced the cards and shipped 'em out, I find this hard to believe. Looks like more Photoshop work on the Topps staff. After further examination, the Clayton picture shows a pefectly straight "Jays" logo, while his shirt is wrinkled.
That's just kinda' cheap, IMO. It's better than the old airbrushed jobs they used to do in the 70's, but it's still cheap (I have a Dave Kingman "Cubs" card from 1978. Looks like someone painted over his picture with a crayon and snuffed out his old team colors).
Scrooge McSuck - March 5, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)
Awesome-o! I still need to pick up some 2007 packs, for collecting sake. It's fun every now and then looking back and seeing who was... holy shit, Jose Canseco was a Yankee in 2000?!

I would much rather have a card of them in their old uniforms with them listed for the right team.
Scrooge McSuck - March 5, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
Yeah!
2006 Example. Cards of guys like Edgar Renteria. He's in his new uniform, but the color pattern for the card was still the Red Sox. Or Tom Gordon. He's ion a Phllies uniform, but the card reads "YANKEES", and the back has a Phillies logo.
Real F'n Show - March 5, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
I'd be pissed if I got a Royce Clayton card period. I think I'm gonna pick up a pack of Topps today...
Scrooge McSuck - March 5, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Clayton... is he on Toronto or some other team this year? I keep losing track of the bastard.
Edit: I still can't get a Kazmir! GAH! From Topps '06, I have Rocco, EDWIN JACKSON, B.J. Upton, Delmon Young, Chad Orvella, Jorge Cantu, Ben Zobrist, "Team Photo" and mid-season cast off Travis Lee (along with pre-season cast off Danys Baez).
My Yankees list is a bit more impressive... NERD ME!
Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Robinson Cano, Chien-Ming Wang, Scott Proctor, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Jaret Wright, Kyle Farnsworth, Johnny Damon, CRAIG WILSON, Derek Jeter (All-Star), Season Highlights: Jeter's 2,000th Hit, Season Highlights: A-Rod's 450th HR, Team Leaders: A-Rod (RBI) and Wang (W), Classic Duos: Cano/Jeter, DereK Jeter/Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter Gold Glove Winner.
I wonder why I have so many damn Yankees, and so few Rays. FAVORITISM IN CARD PACKS!
S.T. Strickler - March 6, 2007 12:42 AM (GMT)
I've got so many cards it isn't even funny. What I used to do on Beckett was group them by sport, but now I'm grouping them by decade (i.e.: Baseball 1980's, Baseball 1990's). Also, if I have a complete collection, like 1990 Score Football, I have a separate grouping for that. It's a little extra work to maintain it, but it's worth it, instead of looking through almost 40 pages of football cards on there.
eStragand - March 6, 2007 06:10 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah..forgot to tell ya', Scroogey: I also got lucky and got an A-rod "Game Used Bat" card. Card has a piece of his bat embedded in it, from when he hit his 100th HR with the Yankees. That's kind of cool. I haven't picked up anything like that before.
But before I get excited.. they're selling for ONE dollar on eBay. Sheesh.
Scrooge McSuck - March 6, 2007 04:00 PM (GMT)
A-Rod isn't even clutch on eBay.
Real F'n Show - March 8, 2007 08:17 PM (GMT)
Picked up a pack, and am now wishing I hadn't. Best card is a K-Rod.
eStragand - June 5, 2007 11:25 PM (GMT)
Ya' know what are some of the most boring cards ever? Fleer 2007 baseball. Every card is of a guy in the batters' box, or a pitcher in his wind-up. Same scale, too. You see each guy from about the knees, on up. Being a photographer for Fleer is the easiest job around.
C'mon, mix it up a bit. Show guys running the bases, in the field, or even the classic Spring Training Shot.
Picked up a "jumbo pack" at Toys R' Us yesterday. Yeah, yeah... I was shopping for a friend's 4 year old. Bought him a play NAIL GUN.
And a GI Joe Grand Slam figure.... but saw that it's for ages 5 and up. Welp, guess I'll have to keep that one.
Scrooge McSuck - June 5, 2007 11:27 PM (GMT)
NERD!
...
I don't even have to make a smart-ass self-insulting comment.
Fleer has always been generic. Topps 2007 aren't much more impressive. Black borders = more signs of wear.
eStragand - June 5, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
Yeah, they seem to bust out the black borders once every decade. All the way back to the 60's.
I don't know why, but I'm buying more baseball cards this year than in any year in the recent past. Screw football. If you guys want some football cards, lemme' know. Seriously, if there's a team set (baseball or football) from 1989-1992 that you want, drop me a line.
Scrooge McSuck - June 5, 2007 11:31 PM (GMT)
I forgot the last time they did that (black), but they have used green and gold borders in recent years, which is basically the same thing. Anything non-white will show damage when it comes to corner scuffing.
eStragand - June 7, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I thought I was in the Big Money when I got a Warren Moon 1985 Topps card around 1990. It was his first NFL card, on a black-bordered set. Oilers were red-hot that year and I was expecting to get 20-30 bucks for the card. Guy said he'd give me a buck, since there were some minor scuffs on the edge.
I like Topps this year, since their main design looks like an update of the 1971 series. (look 'em up).
The S.S. Nintendo - June 7, 2007 09:05 PM (GMT)
Any of you guys have cards from the Topps Heritage series from this year?
eStragand - June 8, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Naw..are those the retro looking cards, where they try to emulate old releases? I may have seen them at Target, but I want to say that they were overpriced. Like 3.95 for 8 cards or some shit.
I think I picked up one or two of those "Mickey Mantle home run cards" as inserts in the regular Topps series. Do those count?
