The next show I think of will probably be a WCW event.

I personally think this was a decent Wrestlemania, although I can see where most peoples hatred for it comes from. Wrestlemania is suppose to be the place to finish feuds, except here the two undercard Titles had a Disqualification finish, and all the matches with actual angles either ended without a clean finish, or just kept on going for several months.
Tatanka/Michaels was a pretty fun opening match, although the dumb finish ruined it. Steiners/Shrinkers was a much better match than I expected, and featured some cool and dangerous spots. Finish was a little botched, but still good. Crush/Doink I'm sure even knows sucked, but it was a cool angle... for about 13 seconds before it became over-used.
Backlund/Ramon was just too short to matter, and sicne Backlund was already on the Job Squad, it didn't matter. the Tag Title Match was pretty fun I thought, although again it ended with a bad finish. Luger/Perfect had a slow portion near the end, but overall another entertaining match. I hate though, that Perfect has jobbed at almost every PPV ever since 1989.
Gonzalez/Undertaker... I think everyone feels the same about this (CRAP!). Bret/Yoko was the best match you could expect from Yokozuna in a normal singles match out in the hot Las Vegas sun. The Hogan portion made very little sense, but I'm not complaining. I don't think this was the WORST Wrestlemania, as Wrestlemania's II, XI, and XV come to mind way before IX does.

I was totally into the first two matches, even tho the opener was a bit of a Dusty finish. It was still a very good opener, and the second match was a decent tag. It was all downhill from there, as the main event wasn't good enough or long enough for a Mania main event, in my eyes. Nothing else is even worth mentioning.

How dare you no-sell Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake. When I was your age, wrestlers knew 3 moves... and we appreciated it!

I liked Rick Steiner doing that awesome suplex during their match.

This IMO, is probably the worst of all the Mania's......except for MAYBE 15 and that is pushing it. The finishes were terrible, the matches were terrible, and the Hogan title win wasn't enough to make up for the show(at the time it wasn't enough either, and I was a major Hogan mark at the time). I liked the "theme" that they were doing as it gave the event a different feel, and the announcing team of Savage/Ross/Heenan was great for one night too.

That got me thinking about the Broadcast team. What a weird combination for a Wrestlemania, Savage, J.R., and Heenan. Savage I think could've had a small angle at least and have a match, which probably could've boosted the match quality ratio up.
I'm surprised Monsoon didn't do PBP too. IIRC, he did commentary for all of the WM's (1-VIII), and then here was just a roaming reporter or something.
I'm not complaining though, because the commentary was quite good and covered up some of the not-so-good stuff. IIRC, they also did commentary at King of the Ring (although that show was pretty good, thanks to Bret Hart having 3 pretty good-kick ass matches in 1 night)

I know everybody said it was a bad WrestleMania, but I pretty much enjoyed it, even though it had a high crap factor. Seeing an event outside like that was pretty interesting, until WCW did the same with Bash at the Beach in '94 and '95.
By the way, what does IIRC mean?
Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2005 09:48 PM (GMT)
It can be two things...
If I recall correctly, or just substitute recall with remember.
I'm also very partial to out-door wrestling events, incase I didn't mention it in the first post. Such a nice atmosphere. Even the crappy-ass shows can be entertaining, like Road Wild 1998.
TehDoct0r - January 21, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
Didn't Road Wild 98 have a kick ass Horseman/Flock tag, or am I hallucinating again?
Scrooge McSuck - January 21, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
Not to my knowledge. Only Flock match was a Triple Threat between Raven, Saturn, and Kanyon IIRC.
PedigreeMC - January 21, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
I liked this one for the ending alone. There really wasn't anything else at all that I cared about or that sticks out in my mind besides the main event. Hogan and Hogan alone could do such a thing.
I could just hear his mind turning....
Hogan : "Vince...how about you let Bret get pinned and I come out and do in 10 seconds what he couldnt do in 10 minutes? Thats the only way I'll work the program brother, take it or leave it dude!"

Perhaps that was a different Road Wild? I remember the match being awesome, but the stupid biker hicks shit all over it.
Nevermind. It was Benoit vs Malenko, not a tag. In 96.

Uh... is that insulting Hogan or liking him?
