Title: OAO NFL Playoffs Thread
Description: Including the "Big Game"

eStragand - January 16, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
Gee, so glad I haven't been following this thing. Just been reading the scores and seeing maybe 2 minutes of highlights.

Unless I'm mistaken, the favorite has won in EVERY game. Well, only exception being the Patriots beating the Chargers...but it was Marty "Lombardi" Schottenheimer, so that wasn't shocking at all.

I'm looking forward to sitting down for the Super Bowl and getting caught up on all the junk I missed. January typically stresses me out (even in "non-Donkey" playoff years), but it's been nice this year. Ignoring the NFL is good for my health.

jamiegeist - January 17, 2007 05:47 AM (GMT)
NFL is better than you.

Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2007 06:27 PM (GMT)
NFL = Overrated.

I'll stick with a sport that doesn't overhype a 40-10 blow-out every week non-stop on 3 different channels, or the Oakland Raiders playing on ESPN Monday night Football, with Tony Kornholer's rambling ass as a lead broadcaster.

The Super Bowl, almost always, is a disappointing game. There've been a few exceptions like the Rams/Titans about 5-6 years ago, but for the most part, the hype surpasses the delivery of the product.

And I don't watch sports for mini-concerts and wardrobe malfunctions that eat up an hour+ for "half-time".

S.T. Strickler - January 20, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
NFL is good, but college football is many times better. In college, you got guys who want to win a championship, not to collect a paycheck.

Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
College has more passion, but the ranking system leaves a lot to be desired... and there's about 800 bowl games now. For God's sake, the PAPA JOHNS BOWL!? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?

Real F'n Show - January 20, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
Peyton will choke again. Brady is clutch. Pats over Saints in the Super Bowl.

Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2007 08:10 PM (GMT)
Colts will win. If they don't, I'll flush...

Wait, I already broke that promise once.

whitemilesdavis - January 20, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
Pats - Saints

I think the fix is in for the Saints, so I'll go witht hem as Super Bowl Champs.

Scrooge McSuck - January 21, 2007 10:52 PM (GMT)
What a great game NO/Chicago has been. [/sarcasm]

Bears go up 16-0, Saints attempt a comeback, then Bears just blow them the fuck away. It's 32-14 right now, and the Saints turn it over again. What is that, 4 turnovers in this game already? And it's not like Rex is doing great. He had an awful 1st half.

whitemilesdavis - January 22, 2007 12:55 AM (GMT)
Good. We got rid of the emotional favorites. I hate that kind of crap, because the pre-game analysts just over-do the hyperbole.

Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
Agreed. Looks like we've got Pats/Bears in 2 weeks. Rematch from Super Bowl XX. :D

whitemilesdavis - January 22, 2007 01:38 AM (GMT)
I got a kick out of the bears playing Super Bowl Shuffle after the game. When I was really little, I thought that was the coolest thing in the world...except for Gary Fencik. Wow. He was white.

eStragand - January 22, 2007 06:21 AM (GMT)
After being swerved by the Saints/Bears game (turned it on when it was 16-14 and looked like a game), I bailed on Colts/Pats when it was 21-3. Made dinner, took a nap, shovelled snow....and just now I see that the Colts won.

Which means Peyton Manning's TV commercial empire has just tripled. For a guy who's in a shitload of commercials, he sure has an awful voice. Even Dan Marion hocking Isotoner gloves was at least listenable.

The Colts winning also brings the Donkeys back down to reality. Since the Patriots started winning Super Bowls, Mike Shanahan's firmly believed that they only won because the Pats didn't face the Broncos. So I wont have to hear another year of braindead Donkey fans claiming that they're the uncrowned champs and worthy of the AFC title.

whitemilesdavis - January 22, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Ummm, that has certainly never been heard outside of the immediate Denver area.

Of course, here there are even more rediculous things said about the Panthers.

That Colts/ Pats game was incredible. I don't care for either team, but that was fun to watch.

eStragand - January 22, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
Trust me, there's alot of shit around here that has no right to ever be heard outside of Denver. Stuff like "Terrell Davis was the best RB in NFL history". Or how everytime ANY public office opens up, people immediatly think John Elway would be a "perfect candidate". Fans and talk radio hosts are Really Fucking Stupid, here.

Former players, (most notbaly Alfred Williams) have claimed that the Donkey organization was always confident of playing the Patriots and treated that week as an assured win. Rumor is that one of the (many) reasons Deltha O'Neal was let go was because he basically handed the 2003 MNF game to the Patriots (Patriots' sole win against the Donkeys since 2001).

People pointed to the fact that the Donkeys have only lost once to the Patriots since the 2001 season. However, the transitive property does NOT work in the NFL ("Team A beat Team B and Team B beat Team C. So Team A should be abel to beat Team C").

Although I read one columnist this month (not from Denver, surprisingly) who felt that the Patriots would win the AFC simply because Denver wasn't in the playoffs. Again, he pointed to the overall lopsided record of Denver vs. New England. Of course, he was proved incorrect.

Real F'n Show - February 4, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
So today's the day, and I'm not even looking forward to it that much. This year I have the least amount of money riding on this game that I can remember.

dynamite kido - February 4, 2007 06:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm kinda on the fence about it myself. I'll watch most of it, but I really don't care about the game that much this year myself.

eStragand - February 4, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
It's fun to watch the Super Bowl when you don't have a dog in the fight. It's like watching a rasslin' match without being in full-on mark mode. You just notice funny things and the absurdity of the entire event. Plus, I always look for new trivia to add to my repertoire (I kick tushy at Super Bowl trivia...well as long as it's not stupid shit like exact numbers).

I always enjoy the stupid "celebrity" predictions. I mean, who does CARROT TOP want to win?! Bob Denver (Giligan) finally faded from the field when he croaked two years ago.

Watched some old Super Bowl highlight videos on ESPN2 around 2am last night. Numbers 19-21 (9ers, Bears, Giants). I had forgotten that Rich Karlis had missed TWO chip shot fieldgoals in Super Bowl 21. He missed one from the 6 yard line in what was the record for shortest miss in a Super Bowl (aka Shittiest FG Attempt in Super Bowl History).

S.T. Strickler - February 4, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
Speaking of Super Bowls, I watched part of Super Bowl XXIII last night featuring the 49ers and Bengals.

Big F'N Swigg - February 5, 2007 04:00 AM (GMT)
How many fumbles in that game? That was ridiculous

Scrooge McSuck - February 5, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
My prediction almost came true (34-17, really 29-17). If not for the missed extra point and FG by the Colts, I would've been off by 1 point.

Oh, and that game was a fucking MESS. It also didn't help the Colts monkey spanked the Bears for the last 45 minutes of the game.

dynamite kido - February 5, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was really underwhelmed by the game last night.

Was it just me that felt that by watching the game last night that neither team was the best team to be representing the AFC/NFC?

Real F'n Show - February 5, 2007 05:16 PM (GMT)
Eh, I won $20. I'm happy. Only 2 more months before baseball!

eStragand - February 5, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
Actually, only TWO WEEKS until baseball!!

The weather had alot to do with the fumbles. When it rains like that in Miami, it's basically like playing football inside a locker room shower or a sauna. The fumbles were about equal on both sides, so it seemed to balance out.

The Bears hung around long enough to keep it interesting. It wasn't until that big interception TD return that the game was sealed. The Bears basically kept it close as a result of two plays-- the big opening return and Thomas Jones' big 50+ yard run. So I'd give the Chicago defense some credit (not alot...but some). Colts didn't throw as often as they do to Harrison or Wayne, so they adjusted their scheme with all the short shit to Addai.

Wasn't a classic game, but I thought it was entertaining and that, yes, they were the two best teams in the NFL this year. I don't know who else you'd want to represent the AFC. Maybe the Patriots? But the Colts went through them, so there ya' go. Colts looked like juggernauts for the first 10 weeks of the season, too.

I also had my Dad convinced for a few minutes that "D. Rhodes" meant "Dusty Rhodes".

Oh yeah...anybody watch PUPPY BOWL III on Animal Planet? I saw it was re-running at 11pm and tuned in. Billed as a "Super Bowl Alternative", it was a big THREE HOUR TELECAST of puppies playing in a faux "stadium". That's it'. No point. They got Bissell and Subaru to sponsor it. I'm sure it was a hit with the Jean Teasdale crowd (the chick from The Onion).

Big F'N Swigg - February 5, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
The Puppy Bowl had a "Kitty Halftime Show." Which was kittens playing in the stadium. My wife was mesmerized

Great gooly-goo. Please tell me your wife doesn't have a fake road sign on your back porch that says: "Caution: Squirrel Crossing".

I thought PUPPY BOWL III would be one of those dog competition shows. Where the dog runs through cones, up a ramp, and shit like that. But nope...3 senseless hours of an animated Puppy Calendar.

They have an entire site devoted to it. You can see what you missed, plus get tips on how to throw YOUR own Puppy Bowl party:

I thought I just resonded to this?

Anywho, I didn't enjoy the game at all, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well Prince did at halftime.

I personally thought that Prince was the most entertaining thing that happened all night.

whitemilesdavis - February 6, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
Me too.

I haven't been interested in Prince in ...decades, I guess. The sound was a little off, with Prince's guitar a little too loud. However, that allowed him to show what an underrated guitarist he is. By the Foo Fighters cover, I was pretty much like," Dang, this is good." When Purple Rain hit, I marked out like a Hulkamaniac, yelling and holding my invisible lighter in the air.

No, my wife was just giggling because it was kitten's playing with each other. It was really random, as she isn't one of "those people" who always have puppy and kitten calendars and stuff.

And yeah, I laughed out loud when the giant sheet went up and Prince started playing with himself, I mean, with his guitar

Good call.

I thought that the way they had the guitar sound up a bit did the same for him. Prince tends to be crimally underrated as a musician so I thought that was cool. Plus, the guy is pretty badass. He hasn't done anything commercially in the last few years but they are still giving him the opportunity to do his thing.

eStragand - February 6, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
Okay... Prince had THE most blatant air-guitar pantomime I've seen since Elvis. He wasn't even trying to fool anybody. Just passing his hands over his guitar. What a pile. When he said "can I play this ghee-tar here", everyone watching in the room said "No. you CAN'T".

People can say it was offensive that he was playing with his "unit" during the sheet spot....but I was more offended that he was performing, PERIOD. Proud Mary into Foo Fighters into some of his usual shit? If some clown who hasn't had a hit in 15 years playing an air guitar and free associating is up your alley, then this was your night to ejaculate.

whitemilesdavis - February 6, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
You are incorrect sir. He was playing every note of it. He was only doing left hand hammer-ons during the part I assume you are referring to, which is why his right hand wouldn't have been making contact. His guitar was louder than the rest of the mix, so when he hit a string it was evident. Seriously, whether you enjoy his music or not. Prince is one of the top few instrumentalists in pop music history.

eStragand - February 6, 2007 09:12 PM (GMT)
Let's get a video proof! Looked like total shit to me. As if the "real" guitarist was buried underneath the stage and Prince was up there strumming. I wasn't buying it at all.

Big F'N Swigg - February 6, 2007 09:16 PM (GMT)
While I agree that Prince wasn't the best choice for the big game, and most everyone I watched it with agreed as well, who else would you have had? The only current bands/stars big enough to actually fit that haven't already played the Super Bowl would be Red Hot Chili Peppers or Foo Fighters.

whitemilesdavis - February 6, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
I would bet every dime I had that he was playing it. There were even flubbed notes. If he were gonna fake it, he would have jsut used a track. Just trust me, he was playing.

whitemilesdavis - February 6, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
Are you guys frigging drunk? I thought he was incredible...and I'm no Prince fan.

I'm going with the fact that he was playing myself.

Going with the reasons WMD said, I honestly don't think Prince would get up there and play what he played if he actually wasn't doing it himself.

whitemilesdavis - February 6, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
I'll move on from the "did he play it" question, because he clearly did. What I'm not getting is the hate for the performance. I thought it was the most memorable performance since U2 did their 9/11 tribute. Chili Peppers certainly wouldn't have satisfied a diverse crowd, and Foo Fighters would have just been swallowed in that big of a setting. While I'm sure that there were other acts available, the half-time show is rarely about current acts. Last year was The Rollling Stones, the year before was Mcartney.

eStragand - February 6, 2007 09:31 PM (GMT)
I'm going to search YouTube tonight and spot the air-guitarring.

I hate all halftime shows. I would've had no music. Just the jetpack guy from Super Bowl 2. Or have a buncha' puppies run all over the field.
