Title: My Idea For Commentary
Mad Dog - January 15, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
Use Jim Cornette as the PBP and then have Kevin Nash and Konnan as the color announcers.
Big F'N Swigg - January 15, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
That would be SOOOO much better than West & Tenay.
And after watching PRIDE on FSN the other day, I think West & Tenay would be much better suited for a show like that
dynamite kido - January 16, 2007 01:03 AM (GMT)
I swear I'm the only person that doesn't mind Tenay and West.
whitemilesdavis - January 16, 2007 01:27 AM (GMT)
I actually like Tenay and West, except when they are on-screen.
Mad Dog - January 16, 2007 03:39 AM (GMT)
I'm fine with Tenay and West actually. I just think they could do a lot more with the booth. I'd put Cornette/Nash/Konnan into the booth. Then have Tenay do backstage interviews and then keep West in the shill area.
SamoaRowe - January 16, 2007 05:00 AM (GMT)
Compared to J.R./King, I have no problem with Tenay and West, except they come off as trying too hard to sell every freaking angle. It wouldn't hurt to freshen things up though and try out someone new.
Big F'N Swigg - January 16, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
I like them both, but not together in the booth.
Tenay was my favorite analyst in high school. I loved Tenay with Larry Z on WCW Worldwide. It's tailor made for his personality. I just don't think he's the guy to be your MAIN commentator
whitemilesdavis - January 16, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
I would agree with that, and he never needs to be on camera. West has improved tremendously over time, and I would agree with Rowe that they are better than the RAW booth.
I don't think Cornette would work as a full time announcer, as we all think of him as a character and that particular character could get tiring. I also remember Nash doing some color at one point, and his low key sense of humor just didn't work to get over the on-screen action. Konnan would probably do a great job if he recovers from his illness.
Scott Hudson should do pbp, Konnan on color, and Tenay as the third man in the booth.
Big F'N Swigg - January 16, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
See, I've always thought Shane Douglas would do good as color. What little I've heard of his commentating from ECW was awesome. Stick him with someone competent, and you've got a good team.
I'll admit right now, that part of my problem with Tenay as a booth commentator is that he's too willing to insert himself into the feud. I'm very much a guy who likes my play by play unbiased. Not that you can't admit that something is vicious, or ridiculous, but "GOLDILOCKS, YOU WHORE!" is a bit much.
whitemilesdavis - January 16, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
I agree with everything you said there. I don't like Tenay as entertainer, and Douglas would be fantastic, probably the best choice mentioned so far.
SamoaRowe - January 16, 2007 05:45 PM (GMT)
I actually wouldn't mind having Scott Hudson on PBP either. He is actually better than most people give him credit for.
Shane Douglas would probably be fantastic. Ditto for Kevin Nash.
eStragand - January 16, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Shane Douglas wouldn't work on commetary.. because you can't stroke your beard and LOOK CONCERNED when the cameras aren't on you.
Tenay's a good announcer...but in TNA he's been trying to be Jim Ross. With garbage like: "Damn you, Joe!!! You've gone too far!!" That should be the job of the color man, not the PBP guy. They basically have two color guys in the booth, right now.
whitemilesdavis - January 18, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
I'd be glad if neither guy made those comments. The booth should be impartial 99% of the time. That way when they break out a "you've gone too far!" it has some meaning.
They only show Tenay on camera 100 times a show. I figure that would be enough beard stroking for Douglas. The trademark evil laough would probably get old quick, though.
Big F'N Swigg - January 18, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
I don't know. I've liked what little commentary I've heard from Douglas. The one I specifically remember is Tazz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow from ECW. I think it was a Heatwave, but I know it's from Dayton, OH.
He was really good, even though he was being partial to Bam Bam. He was partial in a way that wasn't horrid.
whitemilesdavis - January 18, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
Heenan was always partial in an OK way.
Scrooge McSuck - January 26, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
Tenay and West are fine, except for the obvious problems.
1. They push EVERYTHING too damn hard. I've never heard fake-orgasms over back slides featuring bad wrestlers in my life, and I've listened to Jim Ross for the last 5 years.
2. Throw in a 3rd man who will SUBTLELY FAVOR HEELS to counter-act their babyface love-fests. And we all know with how TNA books subtle.
