Newswire For The Week Of January 16th!!!
1/17/04
ROH

January 16th: Austin Aries will defend the ROH World Title vs. Colt Cabana in a Steel Cage match on 2/19 at the RexPlex in Elizabeth, NJ. Cabana challenged Aries to the match since Aries gave him a brainbuster on the ramp. Cabana wants to keep it in the ring while this violent feud escalates. As a result of the precendence set in the Samoa Joe vs. Jay Briscoe "At Our Best" World Title Steel Cage match, the Aries vs. Cabana match can end in pinfall, submission or escaping the cage.

January 16th: Mick Foley has challenged Samoa Joe to face his mystery wrestler on 2/19 at the RexPlex in Elizabeth, NJ. Joe has accepted. Foley will be in the corner of his mystery wrestler. Foley said he will give us more information on the mystery man soon.

January 16th: ROH officials are trying to figure out who handed Foley the steel chair through the curtain at last night's event. The chair led to Foley laying out Samoa Joe. Could Foley's mystery wrestler be the one that handed him the chair?

January 16th: ROH returns to Cambridge, MA on 4/16 featuring a special appearance by Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

January 16th: Spanky has been added to the 2/25 Dayton, OH and 2/26 Chicago Ridge, IL events. We will announce matches for both shows later this week at rohwrestling.com.

January 16th: Dan Maff & BJ Whitmer will challenge Ricky Reyes & Rocky Romero for the Tag Titles on 2/19 at the RexPlex.

January 16th: If you want blood make sure to check out the new DVD release "ROH Bloodlust" featuring some of the most crimson covered contests in ROH history. It is available for immediate delivery now at ROHwrestling.com.

January 18th: Ring Of Honor is close to finalizing some new buildings in new markets and some announcements should be made soon here at ROHwrestling.com.

January 18th: Spanky and James Gibson have both recently asked ROH officials for a chance to wrestle each other. Spanky and Gibson want to showcase what they can do against each other without any restraints. ROH officials are currently shopping this match to local promoters and we will have a location for this bout by the end of the week.

January 18th: ROHwrestling.com currently has a huge sale on Secrets Of The Ring and The Straight Shootin' Series. You can now get $5 off on every edition of The Straight Shootin' Series and Secrets Of The Ring including the Mick Foley double DVD that is now back in stock.

January 18th: Allison Danger asked several wrestlers backstage on 1/15 to join The Prophecy and they all turned her down. We learned that Bryan Danielson as well as Homicide & Julius Smokes were both asked and they laughed off the invitation. The delusional Danger won't let The Prophecy die and insists that she will sign up new members in every city that ROH has shows in.

January 18th: Another team has been added for the 3/5 one night six man tournament in Philadelphia. The Second City Saints and Extreme Horsemen will merge as the trio will consist of Steve Corino, CM Punk and Colt Cabana.

January 18th: Colt Cabana suffered a neck injury as a result of Austin Aries giving him a brainbuster on the steel ramp on 1/15. Cabana had X-rays done, which showed extreme movement in both his C-3 vertebrae and a very slight nick in his C-4 vertebrae. Doctors have told Cabana to take 2-3 weeks off. Cabana says he will be ready to go for the Steel Cage match on 2/19 in Elizabeth, NJ for the World Title vs. Austin Aries.

January 18th: Steve Corino has been experiencing pain in his knee all week since Roderick Strong attacked the knee on 1/15.

January 18th: Raven has signed on with ROH Merchandise for a video series. This will be a unique series and we'll have more on it in the upcoming weeks.

January 20th: "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson has been added to the 2/19 event at the RexPlex in Elizabeth, NJ for the start of the Third Anniversary Celebration Week.

January 20th: We are sorry for the lack of Newswires this week here at ROHwrestling.com. ROH officials are now busy working on some new markets and finishing up the 1/15 "It All Begins" home release. There should be some new show announcements next week including new markets.

January 20th: ROH officials are also in the process of finalizing the 2/25 Dayton, Ohio and 2/26 Chicago Ridge, IL lineups, which is why no new matches have been announced this week. We will have several matches for each show early next week including the location of the Spanky vs. James Gibson bout.

January 20th: Jack Evans promises that he will be back fulltime starting at the 2/19 event and he will be 100%. We still don't know how Evans feels about Austin Aries & Roderick Strong splitting from Alex Shelley.

January 20th: In what could be the most bizarrely entertaining match in ROH history, The Christopher Street Connection return for "Do Or Die IV" on the afternoon of 2/19 at the RexPlex to take on The Heartbreak Express from Full Impact Pro. Tickets are only $5 for this afternoon event featuring the best talent from all over the indy world and a Homicide FIP Heavyweight Title defense vs. Antonio Banks. Rocky Romero will challenge Homicide for the FIP Title on 2/12 in Sebring, FL and if Romero wins he will take Homicide's place vs. Banks. Check FullImpactPro.com for more info.

January 20th: Austin Aries will make his first international defense of the ROH World Title this Saturday in Montreal, Quebec. Aries will take on the winner of a three-way pitting Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Steen vs. El Generico. ROH Pure Champion John Walters will also defend Pure Title on this event as he takes on Excess plus CM Punk vs. PCO, Roderick Strong vs. Franky The Mobster and much more. ROHwrestling.com will have this event for sale. Will Joe get his rematch this Saturday and not have to wait for Chicago Ridge? Can upcoming talents like El Generico and Kevin Steen make their name in one night by pulling out the upset? They have the raw talent, now they will get their opportunity. For more information go to www.ncw.qc.ca/grizzly.

January 20th: There are still no clues as to who handed Mick Foley the steel chair through the curtain on 1/15. The chair was the deciding factor in Foley laying out Samoa Joe.

January 20th: ROH is looking to add to the tag team division and will try out some new combos on upcoming shows.

January 20th: Samoa Joe will definitely get a ROH World Title match on 2/26 in Chicago Ridge, IL if he does not win it this Saturday in Canada. If Colt Cabana defeats Austin Aries in the Steel Cage match on 2/19, Cabana will make his first title defense in his hometown of Chicago vs. Joe. If El Generico or Kevin Steen win it this Saturday, they will be added to the Chicago area event to defend it against Joe

-Colt/Aries in a cage? Wow, they apparently are getting worried about Aries drawing power as a champion......or something?

Big F'N Swigg - January 18, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
I would go nuts if the mystery wrestler was Mikey Whipwreck.

Mad Dog - January 18, 2005 04:19 PM (GMT)
Something tells me RoH might be hitting the panic button soon with Aries.

I think them doing the cage match with Cabana is already kind of admitting that there is a problem. Apparently the match of Cabana/Aries(which should have been built better considering there was a solid little Saints/Gen Next fued going on over the summer)isn't drawing enough, and now they are using a cage to try and make up for it.

TehDoct0r - January 18, 2005 09:32 PM (GMT)
I think that's jumping to conclusions just a bit. Joe was put into a cage last year and no one thought it was a sign of weakness on his part. Aries has had one show as champion, I'm sure no one is panicing yet.

Big F'N Swigg - January 19, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
I think that no matter WHO followed Joe as champ, they would have a difficult reign. Only Danielson, Daniels, and Punk could do it without a problem.

dynamite kido - January 19, 2005 01:54 AM (GMT)
You do realize that the cage match you speak of was Joe's first anniversary with the title....right? Plus, they are giving Aries a cage match IN HIS SECOND TITLE DEFENSE. That and the fact that at the 1/15 show the Joe/Foley program was ahead of the ROH title match proves that other things are main eventing over their champion. It's just this time a cage is the draw instead of the champion........so it's not the same thing.

I couldn't agree with this more. Although I think Danielson would be fine regardless......he would be a draw because all the indy fans and net fans mark for him.

TehDoct0r - January 19, 2005 02:56 AM (GMT)
I agree that Aries isn't living up to Joe right now, but I think the Joe/Foley thing would get top billing over a title match even if it were Punk or Dragon who took the strap. NO ONE will live up to Joe, and even if they did, the net would still shit on them simply because they're not Joe. I admire Gabe for putting the belt on a newer guy and giving him a huge rub rather than put it on a "safe" guy. And, for the record, I think all three previous RoH champs have turned out quite well (yes, evern Xavier), so give Gabe and Aries some time.

dynamite kido - January 19, 2005 04:03 AM (GMT)
Make it clear that I'm not shitting on Aries at all, even though I'm not huge on the guy. I was just stating that with the way they are booking the shows right now, they really aren't letting Aries run with the ball. That reason to me is that they seemed to be concerned about his drawing capablities at this point. That's what I was talking about, I'm also not debating that Joe/Foley wouldn't be over anyone else......I'm also thinking that giving someone the ROH title isn't necessessarily giving them a rub either.

TehDoct0r - January 19, 2005 04:23 AM (GMT)
You pose an interesting point. Having to live up to Joe being a bad thing, being the next champion isn't really a rub. Hmmmm. I'm going to sip cocoa and contemplate this in the study.

Big F'N Swigg - January 19, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Will you be smoking a bubble pipe as well?

TehDoct0r - January 19, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
Hahaha. Bubble.... yea..... that's what you crazy kids call it nowadays.

Big F'N Swigg - January 19, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
Who are you calling a kid?

TehDoct0r - January 19, 2005 05:27 PM (GMT)
Nobody in particular, old chap. It's simply an expression.

Big F'N Swigg - January 19, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Who are you calling old?

TehDoct0r - January 20, 2005 03:40 AM (GMT)
::insert clever turn of phrase here::

Damn dude, this show is REALLY looking better to me. Too bad that drive to Dayton isn't too appealing to me after all this wonderful winter weather we've been getting.......

TehDoct0r - January 24, 2005 04:45 PM (GMT)
I bet theres some sort of Angle with GenNext either immediately before or immediately after that match. Am I a genius or what? But seriously, I hope they don't interfere.

The Last Free Voice - January 24, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
Fucking shit piss. THere is no feisable (spelling is off, I'm sure) for me to make the Dayton show. I'm sad.

Big F'N Swigg - January 24, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
Why not?

And I have to distribute posters across South Dayton for the show.
