Title: What Happened To Thanksgiving?

Mad Dog - November 15, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)
Seriously. The Christmas commercials started the day after Halloween. My mom saw some Thanksgiving decorations she liked at a local place and went back like the Saturday after Halloween and they had been taken down already. All of the stores here have Christmas stuff up already.

It's just insane to me.

dynamite kido - November 15, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
Christmas is nothing like it used to be.

Now the only thing it means in this country is that greedy corporations get to fill everyone with "come and buy now" mentality so that they can make out good this quarter.

BLAH.

Scrooge McSuck - November 15, 2006 02:23 PM (GMT)
Humbug. 99% of America has the wrong opinion of Christmas... and the 1% is religious fanatics no one wants to pay attention to.

whitemilesdavis - November 15, 2006 02:56 PM (GMT)
Personally, I don't get all the Christmas hate. I love it all - Santa Claus, Baby Jesus, packed stores, heavy-handed marketting, awkward time with distant relatives...seriously, I love all of that.

Mad Dog - November 15, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
I'm just not ready for it yet. It starts for me the day after Thanksgiving. But I also hate going anywhere around Christmas as stores are disaster areas.

Real F'n Show - November 15, 2006 05:02 PM (GMT)
Don't be such a Scrooge McSuck.

Big F'N Swigg - November 15, 2006 05:15 PM (GMT)
I hate what Christmas has become. It's a greedy grab fest for major corporations, and a political stepping stone for conservative pundits.

Whatever happened to Santa and the baby Jesus?

eStragand - November 15, 2006 06:09 PM (GMT)
You're right....we should all put on a play, depicting the true meaning of Christmas. I'll carry my blanket around and tell the story of the Three Wise Men. Then we'll have a dance. I have a buddy who can play the piano...and his dog can dance on top of said piano.

Good grief.

Ignore it. No reason to let it steal your enjoyment of the holidays. Who cares what 85% of the world is doing. Me and my little crew are gonna have a good time.

I think this year will be better than last year. I moved back to Tennessee, and it's not as "politically charged" as where I was living in Ohio. Especially the family around me in Ohio

My Mother-in-law chewed me out last year for saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Ironically, I've always said Happy Holidays instead of Christmas. And she's half-Jewish.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - November 16, 2006 05:41 AM (GMT)
I still love Christmas. It's what you make of it, really.

whitemilesdavis - November 16, 2006 01:07 PM (GMT)
And I love you, Choate.

Tennessee eh? Looks like Santa's bringin someone a bottle of moonshine this year.

Big F'N Swigg - November 17, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
Especially since I just found out that my great-grandfather and his family were moonshiners back in the day

Bah! Humbug. Just another excuse to pick a mans pocket every December the 25th.

Christmas gives me a couple days off of work. Therefore, I like it.

SamoaRowe - November 30, 2006 04:07 PM (GMT)
Well, it gets me a day off from work, but two months of intense headaches too. I'm not sure which is better.

eStragand - November 30, 2006 04:55 PM (GMT)
I had a client out of Fort Collins around 1999-2000. Fairly big company, and they gave everyone four weeks off for Christmas, each year. The offices would be closed from about Dec 9 until Jan 3. They were my main client at the time, so it gave me four weeks of farting around.

Oh, I watched the Thanksgiving parade last week... on the Spanish channel. I couldn't stand all the brainless English commentary. Stuff like:
"If you were to fill this balloon up with milk, it'd be enough milk to supply the town of Boise for three months!"
"Mmm.. hope they like MILK!"
"Gobble gobble!"

Or Al Roker's interview with "The Cast of Heroes".
"You're all on the show Heroes, is that right?"!
"Yes, we're on Heroes, it's great. We all play different characters"
"So isn't it great being here at the parade?!"
"Yes, it's great being here. We're enjoying this!"

At least the Spanish commentary was stuff I wasn't meant to understand. That was good.

Yeah, retail jobs. :(

Christmas is fun now that I don't have to see any family. So, I can relax all day and play Skies of Arcadia. A new yearly tradition.
