Title: WWE 24/7 thread

Scrooge McSuck - August 19, 2006 01:10 PM (GMT)
Nothing much on selections right now, with a few episodes fof Nitro/Raw and ECW from 95/96 and some PPV's I already have (Bitches).

SamoaRowe - August 19, 2006 01:17 PM (GMT)
That's cool. I've been sort of looking into getting it now that Comcast has it. Is it still only ten bucks a month?

Scrooge McSuck - August 19, 2006 01:28 PM (GMT)
$7.99 from what my cable company said. It's worth it to me. Next month the "Territories" section starts, with AWA, Ch. Wre. from Florida, NWA and other stuff added on. :)

S.T. Strickler - August 19, 2006 01:46 PM (GMT)
Damned Adelphia. Still don't have WWE 24/7.

That's what I'm sayin....

Real F'n Show - August 19, 2006 10:19 PM (GMT)
If I wasn't so poor and going into college I could see myself wasting $7.99 a month on this...

eStragand - August 20, 2006 06:39 AM (GMT)
Oops..I had a similar thread in the WWE forum. (Props to Plague for answering me).

Anyways, my question is: is this stuff replayed in its original format? Most notably: original commentary teams? I imagine everything will have a "WWE 24/7" watermark in the lower right hand corner. But if most of it's stuff like Michale Cole and Tazz calling an old Brutus Beefcake match, I may as well masturbate with a potato peeler. Will the old Nitros have Tony Schiavone?!!?

I'm mainly into old stuff-- like 1992 and earlier. I was also a big fan of the Nitro era, from about 1997-2000. If it's original non-editted stuff with original commentary, I'll be in for 8 bucks a month to DVD-R all of this shit.

Ohhh! Plus, if a coupla' us have it, we can do a "tag-team review" of one event a month (or as time warrants). Y'know, like three different guys each do three different matches from SummerSlam 92. That'd be kinda' funny.

The Last Free Voice - August 20, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
Nope, original commentary, from what I've watched. (My brothers watch it more than me.)

I wasn't aware of the "Territories" thing coming up, which is really cool. I mayhave to start paying more attention to it now.

eStragand - August 22, 2006 04:49 AM (GMT)
Looks like they show a small portion of their monthly features for free.

I watched 4 matches from the Maple Leaf Gardens show:
-Rene Goulet vs. Nick DeCarlo
-IC Title: SD Jones (!) vs. Greg Valentine
-Rocky Johnson vs. Nikolai Volkov
-Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid vs. Goldie Rogers & Bobby Bass.

They weren't introduced or mentioned as the "British Bulldogs", which was interesting. Obviously before they were given the official team name.

Also watched an abbreviated episode of RAW from 9/9/96 with:
-Farooq vs. Savio Vega
-Shawn Michaels & Jose Lothario in-ring interview
-Various "Superstars" give "get well" wishes to Ahmed Johnson
-Undertaker vs. Salvatore Sincere

The Maple Leaf show had small "this year in history" blurbs pop-up on the bottom of the screen. One was "Singer Ashlee Simpson is born in Texas". WTF?!!

prof_plague - August 22, 2006 06:08 AM (GMT)
I watched some WWE 24/7 of MSG in June '73. All of it was original commentary and such. I can't say with the newer stuff uses the original entrance music, as that wouldn't have been part of the WWWF. The most part, a lot of the music was done by Jim Johnson (if that's the name I'm thinking), so WWE still owns a lot of music almost everything before 2000 or so. Even nowadays they own most of the music, unless it's a well known band.

Also, I feel sad knowing that I remember most of the September card. It just goes to show how much I absorbed in 1996 when I first started watching.

And if anyone gets 24/7 this month, DVD-R a bunch of that territory stuff and Maple Leaf - in particular, the Andre/Kamala Cage match. I crave to see that match. Anyone know if WWE owns the video library to Grand Prix?

eStragand - August 22, 2006 03:27 PM (GMT)
The Maple Leaf show is gone, already. Dammit. That was a big lure for me.

It's been replaced with a card from November 1988 at the Meadowlands. Bad News vs. Hogan and other stuff.

I'm thinking I'll go ahead and subscribe, this week. I'm getting sick of Skinemax's constant re-runs of "Hotel Erotica" (which is just...bad. Weird looking broads and horrible situations).

dynamite kido - August 22, 2006 04:17 PM (GMT)
If anyone here has DVD-R capabilities or can at least VHS this stuff contact me if you want to setup some trades. I want to catch as much of this stuff on the territories as I can....

The Last Free Voice - August 22, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
I have a DVR but no way of making it into anything. No DVD recorder and my VCR is about to die. Unless there's some magic thing I'm missing about DVR, which is very possible.

I wasn't talking about a DVR LFV. I was talking about DVD-R which is recordable DVD's.

The Last Free Voice - August 22, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
I'm an idiot. I think we all know that by now. Message boards plus me in the mornings is never a good thing. Though it looks like my DVR box has a USB Cable output that I could run to my PC which DOES have a DVD Burner. I should probably look into that...

prof_plague - August 23, 2006 01:15 AM (GMT)
:Gives LFV a DVD...by that I mean a Death Valley Driver.

Feels bad and gives him a DVD.:

The ES Complex is equipped with a DVD-R.

Get back to me in about a month :)

Watched ECW from 5/27/95 to 6/12/95 tonight (3 weeks worth). Coincedentally, this was when they stopped showing ECW in my town. So I'm right back where I was 11 years ago. I could do without the Taz/zz intros, though. "Hey, lemme tell ya'...this is a brutal match. I knew these guys and lemme tell ya', they're more tougher than anyone other out there". He did have one funny joke about his own "dog collar match" in a hotel room, though.

The "shorties" section has stupid vignette of wres, errr..SUPERSTARS around the world. Including a Kuwait clip from 1996-- where Davey Boy Smith tries to drown Shawn Michaels in the Persian Gulf. Heh.

I think it's completely worth the 8 bucks. Less than the price of one DVD. I think I'll even be recording the recent stuff. Oh yes...there's even an episode of TNT!!!

The Last Free Voice - August 23, 2006 12:34 PM (GMT)
The Shorties section is usually pretty bad. The only good one they had was in May, whenthey had a tonne of Lucha stuff for Cinco De Mayo.

Scrooge McSuck - August 23, 2006 01:07 PM (GMT)
The Hogan/Brown match in question features Hogan wearing a goofy-ass helmet with a fist on top of it. It actually works into the finish of the match.

Also added was the 7/5/85 episode of TNT, and the next 2 weeks of the Monday Night Wars (9/9 and 9/16).

The fabled Hogan Helmet is in that match?! Sheee-oot, Cooter...that's worth 40 bucks right there!

Yeah, I wanna' catch that TNT show tonight. Plus the 45 minute Nikolai Volkov documentary. I'd say pop culture has reached new levels of excess, when someone makes a Nikolai Volkov Documentary.

And I pay for it.

Scrooge McSuck - September 1, 2006 01:07 PM (GMT)
You're not alone...

WOOO! Greg Valentine profiled this month! That's about 500x better than Volkoff's old, wrinkled, 154 year old commie butt.

Real F'n Show - September 1, 2006 02:26 PM (GMT)
Greg Valentine matches all month? Fuck, I wish I could afford this...

The Last Free Voice - September 1, 2006 02:57 PM (GMT)
The new Territories thing is Ace. Ace I tell you. Old school NWA and AWA? Fuck yes.

Real F'n Show - September 1, 2006 04:12 PM (GMT)
Stop trying to tempt me into buying it. I probably have most of the stuff already anyway. They don't have like semi-rare stuff on the channel, do they?

Put! On! The Glasses!!

Another tease that'll get you to buy: there's an old 1983 tag team match with Dizzy Hogan and Sweet Brown Sugar! C'mon now... Brutus and Koko! Together!

Honestly, it's becoming a bit much for me. There's no way I can watch all of this. I'm already hearing "wotta' manuever" in my sleep. But for what I do watch, it's definitely worth 8 bucks.

October's Hall of Fame spotlight is on Harley Race.

I enjoyed the Volkoff special. He really was a top-level guy in the 70's. I was so used to his lumbering character of the late 80's who never got to sing the entire Soviet National Anthem. But yeah, he was a bad-ass in the 70's.

Not surprising, but they included NO mention of Vokoff's 1994 run as DiBiase's man-servant. Was there ever a pay-off to that angle?

Crap..I watched SummerSlam '96 last night. Sucked. Only match that I mildly got into was Shawn Michaels vs. Vader, just cuz' I like usually like Vader and HATE Michaels. I was hoping for a butt-bomb on Michaels. No luck.

The Taker vs. Mankind Boiler Room Brawl was wretched. Does it have a reputation as being a "classic"? It was like watching two drunk guys trying to find the exit. Someone falls off an 8 foot ladder into a cushion. Joy. Just comparing it to the Roddy Piper vs. David Keith Back Alley Brawl, which OWNED!

Greg Valentine is good and all, and I do have a bunch of his NWA stuff, but I have better matches with Johnny Valentine to cruise-through first. If you dig Greg Valentine's stuff, search some old NWA with Johnny Valentine first, get your money's worth.

Real F'n Show - September 4, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
I have a lot of his stuff already. It's all fairly common stuff it seems on WWE 24/7, with Garvin and Steamboat stuff. I was hoping they'd show some really rare stuff.

Scrooge McSuck - September 5, 2006 01:30 PM (GMT)
They showed him winning the IC Title from Chico Santana, and a random match pulled from World Ch. Wrestling against Roddy Piper from March of '83.

I love 24/7. :P

Too bad they didn't show the Ventura hosted TNT episode. They skipped ahead to the next weeks, featuring a managerial bidding war for Savage. Heenan, Blassie, and Hart arguing over each other = GOLD. The rest of the show reeked.

eStragand - September 5, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was bummed that they skipped over the Jesse-hosted TNT. Was there a reason for that? Is Jesse TOO EXTREME for VOD TV?! Or did Jesse actually make good on his promise to bring in Prince as a guest?!

Or...was TNT originally pre-empted that week and did Vince simply screw Jesse out of the host-spot with a set-up? That'd be kinda' funny, actually.

The Hall of Fame segments aren't too bad. They conclude with each guy's Hall of Fame induction. They're not in-depth career retrospectives, but a good presentation of a guy's overall work.

Watched the Dusty Rhodes documentary last night. They spend a good portion on his 1977 series with Superstar Graham. Recorded it and passed it off to my dad. The old man dug it. He's convinced that there's a Rasslin' Hall of Fame and that we need to visit it. (Y'know, isn't there one in Oklahoma? Been around about 20 years, I think).

Probably because of the lawsuit they settled with Ventura years ago, they would have to pay him royalties off of it.

Scrooge McSuck - September 6, 2006 01:06 PM (GMT)
Only on DVD's/video releases. They have his voice and likeness on everything on 24/7.

But is it only on stuff that has been released by them?

Because I think that lawsuit would cover something people pay for like on demand TV.

Scrooge McSuck - September 9, 2006 01:16 PM (GMT)
Hm... good question. I should look into that, since most of the stuff they put on is either PTW (hosted by Gorilla/Heenan), TNT (McMahon), and old PPV's.

HOWEVER! They recently aired an AWA crap show hosted by Okerlund that had Ventura plastered all over it, and I don't think AWA released many videos featuring their TV shows. :D

eStragand - September 9, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
I think the Crappy AWA Show was put together around 2001 or so and released by another company. Before Okerlund (and maybe even Hogan) went back to WWE. I'm guessing Vince bought the rights to that show when he got in bed with the Gagnes.

Since it wasn't an official WWE release, I'm guessing there was no lawsuit with Jesse over it.

The PTW shows have part of "Superstars" with Jesse calling the action. Same for some of the other clips spaced throughout the service.

--BTW, the only "highlight" of that AWA show: Da' Crusher.

I'm a bit disappointed the AWA and CWF series aren't going in chronological order. Maybe if they were GOOD shows, but this month's AWA had jobber squashes for Chico, Hogan, Patera, the High Flyers and...wait for it.. wait for it..... Jerry Blackwell.
