I keep 'em turned off, too. But height starts to add up and adds tons of scrolling for minimal content. Especially when you have a one or two line post. Sorta' looks like this:

Just looks like crap when someone has to scroll vertically to read one thing. The majority of real estate in any post is then 2% content, 98% repeated image. I think it's stuff like that that keeps newbies away.
