Title: MTV Hour 1
Description: Firsts!

eStragand - July 28, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
VH1 Classic is airing this show over the next few days, in celebration of MTV's 25th anniversary. On August 1, they're supposedly showing the entire first day of MTV, as it aired on August 1, 1981.

For this teaser show, the original host segments were left out, but the videos were all played in order. It's good nostagia. Since MTV had no schedule back then, you never knew what would come on next and you'd have to sit through HOURS of crap to see something you liked. As a result, many people became familiar with videos that they hated or had no real interest in. Such as the following list/recap:

1- The Buggles- "Video Killed the Radio Star"
The 1st Ever Video played on MTV. Cult favorite and still as weird and wacky as it was back in '81.

2- Pat Benatar- "You'd Better Run"
1st Chic in Leather Pants on MTV. Benatar always creeped me out, but you can see how teenaged boys probably dug her back then.

3- Rod Stewart- "She Won't Dance"
1st appearance of Camine Appice on MTV. Umm..nice polka dot set, you freak.

4- The Who- "You Better you Bet"
1st decent band on MTV. 1st femmy looking sweater appearance (Roger Daltrey)

5- Ph.d- "Little Susie's on the up"
1st band you've never heard of played on MTV. 1st appearance of a Fat Chic in a Prom Dress Playing a Saxophone on MTV (a record that may still stand). Yes, Tesla covered this tune about 6 years later. Until I saw this video tonight, I had always thought "Litte Suzi" was a Tesla original. Never knew it was a cover.

6- Cliff Richard- "We Don't Talk Anymore"
1st Total Douchebag to appear on MTV. Don't laugh..this is an incredibly catchy tune and will be stuck in your head after the slightest listen.

7- Pretenders- "Brass in Pocket"
1st Skank to appear on MTV

8- Todd Rundgren- "Time heals"
1st flagrant mis-use of surrealist paintings on MTV.

9- REO Speedwagon - "Take it on the Run"
1st gay suit jackets to appear on MTV

10- Styx- "Rockin' the Paradise"
1st lead singer with Camel-toe to appear on MTV. One guitarist kinda' looks like Stan Lane from the Midnight Express and Fabulous Ones.

11- Robin Lane & the Chartbusters- "When Things go Wrong"
Apparently, their career did. 1st HUH? video to appear on MTV. There's an old tall ship, a farmhouse and horses.

12- Split Enz- "History Never Repeats"
1st hairspray violation on MTV

13- 38 Special - "Hold on Loosely"
1st Jesus lookalike to appear on MTV (lead singer). Probably the only song on this list that is STILL played endlessly at every crappy bar across the US, today.

Check this show out this weekend, if you can. Lots of goofy fun.

Fuck everything. I find Pat Benetar to be strangely hot.

I've also seen this show and it's pretty damn cool to see.
