Title: The TCE Top 100

jamiegeist - July 23, 2006 09:09 PM (GMT)
As mentioned, The Cage Effect put together a top 100. Quite a wildly varying list of contributors, although I think you'll notice a (rather expected?) lack of Puro and Mexico coming through. Here ya go:

This will be the official post for the unveiling of the list, as well as any welcome discussion. Points were awards in reverse order (Spot 1 = 100, Spot 2 = 99, etc.) for each person's list, and then the cumulative totals reflect the final rankings. First place votes recieved are in parentheses. First some fun facts about the rankings:

-8 Contributors from TCE.

-231 wrestlers received votes

-3 female wrestlers recieved votes, but didn't finish in the top 100. Mickie James (#124), Trish Stratus (#127), and Cheerleader Melissa 9 (#229).

-11 Chris/Christophers recieved votes, edging out the 8 John/Johnny's.

So without further ado: The TCE Top 100, starting with numbers 100-81.

You just gonna edit this post as more of the list comes out? That'll be good. Kinda hard to critique until we see more of the list. I would already call Steiner and Roode too low, but I am interested to see who is above.

jamiegeist - July 24, 2006 03:40 PM (GMT)
81-61 is added. My brief thoughts:

Numbers 81-61 added.

Definitely some interested trends here. Mark Henry and Big Show back to back over Marafuji will ruffle some feathers, but isn't bad for Marafuji, considering he went unranked by half of the panel. Dragon Kid and Jack Evans tying is a bit of weird poetic justice, as they are two of the top (if not THE top) high fliers in the game today.

Mark Henry even making the list just blows my f'n mind.

Updated to 41.

Mad Dog - July 26, 2006 06:20 AM (GMT)
I've got the rough draft of my first 50 done so far and I have to say the previous year has sucked balls wrestling wise. I haven't felt that any guys outside of the top 15-20 have done anything that great.

jamiegeist - July 26, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
Now posted up to #21. The top 20 comes tomorrow.

jamiegeist - July 27, 2006 04:13 PM (GMT)
Updated to #11. A damn fine start to the top 20, I think.

whitemilesdavis - July 27, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
I know you're a little sensitive about it, but I'll be treating our list in the same manner, so it's only fair:

That's about as bad of a top 20 as I can imagine. Claudio, Cabana, Rave, and Hero are way overrated. I've got to assume for them to average out that way that someone had them very high. Wow.

I'd have to agree there. I don't think Rave belongs in the top fifty. Hero, Colt, and Claudio all belong around mid twenties to mid forties in my opinion

Mad Dog - July 27, 2006 06:49 PM (GMT)
I really know some people aren't going to like this but John Cena is top 10 this year. He main evented Wrestlemania and won and he's been the biggest story all year.

I would put Rave, Hero, and Claudio all in the same boat. Colt I would put up in the low twenties.

I wouldn't put him top ten because he can't work a bit. He certainly has had a better year than last, though.

jamiegeist - July 27, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
Plus remember, the list is criteria-free, meaning people can interpret how they want on John Cena or anyone else.

While I'm baffled Jimmy Rave placed where he did, I am all for Cabana, Claudio, and Hero where they are. Hero and Claudio have carried the ROH-CZW storyline, and Chris Hero is pretty much the best heel working today, not to mention, he can bring it in the ring.

If you saw Colt Cabana's turn to the serious side and feud with Homicide, I don't know how he couldn't be in the top 20, or possibly top 10.

I would disagree on all counts, so not much else to say.

jamiegeist - July 27, 2006 09:09 PM (GMT)
Just out of curiousity, have you been watching ROH in the last 6-12 months? Again, the list is pretty criteria free, and you can only rank what you've seen.

Have you watched any Hero? Even if you've seen him in ROH, you really haven't seen much, cause he didn't wrestle an actual match till May or something.

jamiegeist - July 27, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
Just for an idea of how it balanced out, and just picking one out and going with Hero, he was ranked as such:

34, 23, 7, 12, 24, 2, 87, 15

So, a pretty good representation as his median score puts him in a similiar spot, at 19. Just wanted to toss that out there since it was mentioned that he must've gotten a huge boost from a very high ranking. Although the 2 helped, he also had a very low one, but seemed to be a (generally) consensus top 20.

dynamite kido - July 27, 2006 09:37 PM (GMT)
God damn these lists are fucking terrible. I'm personally boycotting ours as well now. I hate lists. Fuck them in their pointless annoying asses. Drum up discussion another way...

Mad Dog - July 27, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
I've seen bits and pieces of RoH and honestly I don't think anyone from there aside from the obvious few deserve to even touch the top 20. Same with almost all the indy workers out there so far. The last year has been terrible for wrestling everywhere.

Mad Dog - July 27, 2006 11:10 PM (GMT)
Also Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro are Top 15 workers this year IMO.

jamiegeist - July 28, 2006 02:38 AM (GMT)
Sweet, TCE wins! Or something.

If the lists are really getting you bent out of shape, then yeah, I would suggest dropping the idea altogehter. It is just one person's opinion, grouped with other people's opinions for an average. Not a big deal. If someone honestly thinks Mick Foley is THEIR #1 wrestler in the last year, who am I to argue with that person? They may have been more entertained by Foley than anyone else, and that is just fine with me.

dynamite kido - July 28, 2006 03:43 AM (GMT)
I just think lists are played out. Plain and simple. I doubt most people over there would even agree with this list. Like I said before, we can find plenty other ways of drumming up discussion.

ROH? Probably not from the last six months, but I have in the past year.

Hero? I've only seen promo stuff from ROH, but I've seen plenty of his matches over the years, and several from this year. The only thing I like about him is when he punches a fan in the face. Other than that, I think he is a very good example of someone who watches Japanese tapes and tries to throw the moves in his matches.

Shit, I wouldn't say Japanese at all. The last 943 times I've seen him he's gone a European with his style.

whitemilesdavis - July 28, 2006 12:51 PM (GMT)
OK, not neccesarily what I meant. I was referring to the remarks reportedly made about CM Punk upon his entrance to WWE. In other words, he seems to like to throw fancy moves in his matches for no particular reason.

dynamite kido - July 28, 2006 01:21 PM (GMT)
Ahhh.....I know what you mean.

The funny thing is I've thought for quite sometime that Punk is worlds better than Hero in the ring......

whitemilesdavis - July 28, 2006 01:35 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't argue with that at all.

jamiegeist - July 28, 2006 05:55 PM (GMT)
And the TCE top 100 listing is complete. I'm shocked AJ got so much love, and am quite surprised to see Daniels up there so high as well.

Danielson recieved 3 #1 votes, but got robbed, as one of the voters didn't even rank him. Same with Austin Aries, who would've been even higher had he not been unranked by one voter.

dynamite kido - July 28, 2006 06:41 PM (GMT)
Also, I would wonder why Shelley is listed so high too. Not that I'm not a fan, but to be ranked that high is a bit rediculous....

jamiegeist - July 29, 2006 04:06 AM (GMT)
Shelley's numbers, just for fun:

By Ranking spot:

5. 6. 16. 32. 5. 15. 24. 46.

So, by median, he pulls a 15. So it looks like his high numbers helped him, but so did the fact that everyone ranked him, something the following people can't claim:

Danielson, Aries, Christian, Rey Mysterio, KENTA, Punk, Claudio, and Low Ki.
