Deep South Wrestling Television 6-25-06
Hosts are Nigel Sherod and Bill DeMott
These are on insane tape delays so I don’t actually know when this took place. Looking at results March or April would be my best guess. This is divided into chunks so I’m just taking an educated guess at match placement. Some angles might be missing.
Backstage, Palmer Canon berates the refs. He tells them to stay away from the recently fired Nick Patrick or he’ll fire them too.
Palmer Canon vs. Ray Gordy
Canon attacks Gordy as he enters the ring. Canon sends Gordy into the ropes and levels him with a clothesline for two. Gordy ducks a couple of clotheslines and hits a flying forearm. It should be noted that there’s probably only 200 people in the arena but they’re really hot for everything. Gordy hits a clothesline, then an elbow and follows it up with a clothesline to the outside. Canon distracts the ref and the Giant Khalid enters the ring. He headbutts Gordy and it allows Canon to get the arrogant cover for the pin. Dud, nothing match. This was all storyline here as it’s about Canon abusing his power. The match was only 2 minutes or so. Canon calls out the Freakin Deacon who places Willow, a tarantula, on Gordy. They talk trash at the unconscious Gordy.
WINNER: Palmer Canon
Michelle McCool is backstage with MVP. He says the odds are 10 to 2 that he’ll beat Kevin Matthews tonight. I’m unsure of what his gimmick is.
Michelle McCool is with Kevin Matthews. This is his chance to make a name for himself by beating one of the top guys in Deep South.

Matthews hits a neckbreaker drop for two. MVP dodges a charge with a drop toe hold and finishes Matthews with the Playmaker (Skipper’s finisher). ½*, standard tv squash match.
WINNER: MVP
Matt Striker vs. Damian Steele
Steele has to be one of the most bland and boring workers ever. He’s never done a thing to entertain me. The Freakin Deacon joins DeMott on commentary and adds his usual brand of oddness to the booth. Steele’s doing a tennis player gimmick. Lock up and Steele gets a waistlock. Striker escapes with a fireman’s carry and gets a wristlock. Steele escapes and applies a full nelson. Striker escapes with a throw and tries to pin Steele’s shoulders to the mat with his feet for two. Steele rolls into another pinfall attempt from Striker for two. Striker gets a front face lock and then turns it into a headlock takeover. Steele powers out and gets an armdrag followed by a hiptoss and bodyslam. Striker begs off and while the ref’s back is turned he takes off the turnbuckle pad. Striker gets a face rake and rams Steele’s shoulder into the exposed turnbuckle. Striker hits an arm breaker but Steele fights back with punches and chops. Striker reverses an irish whip and hits a neckbreaker for one. Striker goes for a modified abdominal stretch but Steele escapes with a belly to back suplex. Steele hits a punch and then takes Striker down with a couple of dropkicks. Steele goes for a top rope move but Striker catches him and goes for an armbar. Striker lets up to work over the arm. Striker misses a corner charge and crashes into the exposed turnbuckle and Steele hits a cross body block for the three. *, the arm work saved this for the most part. Steele sells the arm after the win which is always a good thing to see. This was 4-5 minutes. Not totally sure though.
WINNER: Damian Steele
Michelle McCool is backstage with the Gymini. The tag team tournament starts tonight. Wow that only took a year to get to. Boring promo shows why they don’t talk in the WWE.
DSW Tag Team Title Tournament Round 1:
Johnny Parisi and Tommy Suede vs. the Gymini
The Gymini taunt Bill DeMott before the match to further their feud. I can’t tell the Gymini apart so I’ll just call them Gymini for this. Lockup and Suede gets tossed. Suede charges and gets hit with a shoulder block. Gymini talks trash but gets kicked in the head. Suede tries a sunset flip but Gymini lifts him by the throat. Suede hits a couple of kicks and tags Parisi in. Parisi ducks a clothesline and hits a couple of punches. Parisi comes off the ropes and Gymini hits a hiptoss. Gymini pushes Parisi down and talks trash with Suede. Parisi gets a kick and pushes Gymini down. The other Gymini blindsides Parisi. Gymini tags in and they hit a double suplex. Gymini covers for two. Parisi gets tossed into the corner and pummeled by Gymini. Gymini tags in and puts the boots to Parisi. Gymini provokes Suede while the other Gymini chokes Parisi. Gymini comes back and chokes Parisi with his boot. Gymini tags in and they hit a double elbow. Gymini applies a bear hug. Parisi tries to fight out but Gymini pushes him into the corner. Parisi tries to fight out of the corner but Gymini cuts him off with a knee. Gymini goes for a vertical suplex but Parisi reverses it into one of his own. Parisi is trying to make the tag but Gymini has him by the leg. Parisi turns around and hits a dropkick and makes the tag. Hot tag time as Suede hits the ring and charges right into a clothesline from Gymini. Suede ducks a clothesline and comes off the ropes with a dropkick. Suede hits the other Gymini with a spinning heel kick. Suede hits a dropkick on the legal Gymini and then hits a dropkick on the other Gymini on the apron. Gymini sends Suede into the corner but charges right into boots. Seude climbs to the top rope and goes for the 450 splash but no one’s home. The other Gymini hits Suede with an ace crusher and covers but he’s not the legal man. Parisi hits the ring and attacks him. As the ref is dealing with Parisi the legal Gymini covers Suede and the ref covers and makes the three count. *1/2, not a bad squash formula match. I hate the Gymini but they could be a useful monster tag team for Deep South if kept to short matches most of the time. The Gymini trash talk with Bill DeMott as they head to the back.
WINNERS: The Gymini
Michelle McCool is with Mike Taylor. Taylor looks kind of like Cassidy O Riley when he was in the Hotshots. Pretty awful promo here as Taylor comes off as your typical indy guy that has no clue on how to cut a promo. Next…
Derrick Neikirk promo. I do like how they have guys cut promos right before their entrance. He mentions that he put Taylor out of action for 3 months and that he’s the greatest champion Deep South has ever had. Well considering the only other champion was the Miz by this point I guess we can’t debate that fact. Not a bad promo at all.
Main Event:
DSW Heavyweight Title Match:
Derrick Neikirk © vs. Mike Taylor
This is kind of odd as both of these guys are half of two of Deep South’s higher card tag teams. I guess that’s what happens when you only have about 20 guys on the roster. Lockup and Neikirk gets a headlock. Taylor escapes with a quick belly to back suplex. Lockup and Taylor gets an armdrag. Taylor gets a waistlock and trips up Neikirk for a takedown. Neikirk rolls Taylor for a one count. Taylor goes from the waistlock to a front face lock and then rolls Neikirk over for a two count. Lockup and Taylor gets a wristlock followed by a headlock takeover. Neikirk rolls Taylor for a two count but Taylor keeps the headlock. Neikirk manages to escape with a head scissors and works the hold. Taylor manages to power out of the hold and grabs another headlock. Neikirk gets it standing but Taylor works him back to the mat. Neikirk grabs an arm and uses it to fling Taylor to the mat. Neikirk works over both arms on the mats before hitting a knee and covering for two. They head to a commercial break and come back with Neikirk still working the arm. Taylor tries to fight him off but Neikirk uses a wristlock takedown and then slams Taylor’s bad hand into the mat. Neikirk covers for two. Neikirk goes back to the arm but Taylor fights out. Taylor sends Neikirk into the corner but then charges into a boot. They exchange blows until Neikirk drops an elbow for two. Neikirk goes back to the arm. Taylor tries to stand it up by Neikirk takes him down and adds a head scissors to the mix. Taylor kips out of the move and then takes Neikirk down with several forearm shots. Taylor hits an atomic drop and follows it up with a leg lariat for two. Taylor goes for a standing moonsault but Neikirk gets his knees up. Neikirk gets a nearfall after a boot to the head. They exchange blows and then do a double clothesline spot. As they slowly get to their feet the Gymini come out to confront Bill DeMott. After a staredown they attack Mike Knox at ringside. Neikirk leaves the ring to save his partner. It spills into the ring to cause the no contest. That ending was kind of annoying. Big brawl with all three teams in the ring. This is going to set up a 3 way tag team dance next week in the main event. The Gymini clear the ring and then taunt Bill DeMott. **, decent main event. With 5 more minutes they could’ve maybe gone somewhere with all the arm work and stuff.
NO CONTEST
Overall:
Deep breath. Wow was this show a mixed bag. First the things I liked. The show feels like the studio matches that you used to see. It's a very nice feel and the crowds are hot for almost everything. While the matches weren't great everything but the main event was under 5 minutes. So at least the bad stuff was short. The announcing is top notch as DeMott and Sherod are very good. I liked how the wrestlers did a little interview before their entrance.
Now for the bad. The wrestling on this show wasn't anything special. Most of these guys are super green and so a lot of the wrestling was basic. There's a lot of hosses floating around down here with the Great Khalid, Freakin Deacon and the Gymini. Other losers on the roster include Damian Steele who's as bland as bland can be. Guys also being green means the promos are really hit and miss. Some guys like Mike Taylor were really bad. And come on the Gymini?
Overall, I would watch this if it was on tv. Wrestling is wrestling and the storylines are halfway decent.
