Since about March I've been slowly watching the "old" DC Animated shows, in order. I've been watching Batman so far, but the other week I picked up the Superman discs and watched some of those.
People love the Batman series with its dark look and tone, but I'd have to say that I like the Superman series more. Batman seems to be trying to be "grim, gritty and cool", but Superman endulges in the overal corniness of superheroics. In one of the first episodes, Superman fights a GIANT DUCK..and has trouble with it. It's funny, yet totally believable. That's a tough trick to pull off.
Another big difference is with the villains. Batman's guys are whacked out nutjobs and it's played up alot. But Superman's guys are frickin' EVIL! Parasite, Metallo and especially Lex Luthor are just nasty people. Parasite's in a cell, recovering...yet still takes a moment to zap and drain a cockroach. That's cruel! Toyman's a creepy nut job, but he mentions that he's not just out to "get his childhood back", he has a vicious vendetta. Brainiac's a misguided computer program and evil on a galactic scale.
With Superman, nothing's off limits. Time travel, dimension hopping, bank robberies, larger-than-life fights, sci-fi gizmos, guest stars, alien invasions...you get everything.
I'm not saying the Batman series is bad..I like it alot. Superman grasps the unbelievable and makes you want more. Isn't that what superheroes are supposed to do?
I like Batman more but I think that's because the animated series was the best Batman ever written. They actually used Bruce and made him feel like he had some depth which the comics rarely pulled off.
I like the Superman show but find it a little boring from time to time. The same problem I always have with Superman. You can't get into anything because he's so powerful. Though I like the guest appearances by the main man Lobo, the Flash and Dr. Fate.
The Batman/Superman movie crossover was pretty good.
Supes seems to be de-powered a bit in this incarnation. He's still strong, but he'll struggle with stuff. Example: a construction crane falls from the top of a skyscraper and he has trouble slowing it down. In the debut episode it takes him forever to stop a plane from crashing.
It continued into Justice League. He'd get zapped by a canon and survive, but he'd be knocked back about 300 feet.
Compared to the old 60's cartoons, where Superman could do a handstand on the earth, then "fly" and move the planet out of orbit.
