As reported yesterday, MTV has made the decision to pick up the Big Vision Entertainment "Wrestling Society X" pilot and the show will now become a full fledged series on the network this year.
MTV has yet to issue an official press release about the project, but are expected to do so after contacting wrestlers affiliated with the original pilot on July 7 that they would be picking up the show and their contracts. Wrestlers still involved with the promotion after the original pilot taping back in April in Los Angeles includes Sean Waltman (who went by Six Pac at the TV taping), Vampiro, Jack Evans, Matt Sydal, Teddy Hart, Alter Boy Luke, Lone Star and Kaos. Additional talent are being discussed by MTV and Big Vision to bring in.
According to reports, the series is currently being designed to run four seasons with a set of 15 half hour programs being taped over a two week span in Los Angeles. Wrestlers involved will be paid for the tapings and will also be paid booking and appearance fees for live events as well. Although it remains to be seen if this same goal is in mind this time around, the original idea was to incorpoate live bands with the wrestling events. The pilot taping in April featured the band Black Label Society playing live throughout the entire show.
The WSX promotion as a whole will carry a very underground, "Fight Club" look to it as the original pilot was taped in a Los Angeles warehouse designed to look like a rundown club. One report even described it as CBGB's meeting the ECW Arena. The entire crowd at the pilot stood around the ring so it had a mosh pit feel to it. The ring was also designed to look makeshift by carrying a dirty look, no mats around the outside, no aprons so you could see under the ring and turnbuckles that had dirty rags taped in each corner. The first pilot TV taping had the following take place which looks to be the first episode to air on MTV soon:
- Jack Evans vs. Matt Sydal.
- Black Label Society performance.
- Over The Top Rope Elimination Ladder Match with 2 WSX contracts hanging above the ring featuring: Six "Sean Waltman" Pac, Vampiro, Teddy Hart, New Jack, Lone Star, Kaos, Puma, Al Katrazz, Justin Credible and Chris Hamrick. Eliminations during the match were described as being thrown over the top rope through a table or onto an "exploding" fence.

This should have good trainwreck appeal to it. How much you want to bet it's 90% music and then 30 second clip jobs of matches?

I've heard before that it is supposed to be very character driven, so I don't know what they'll do to accomplish that. It's an entriguing concept, really, but from a wrestling perspective it's gonna blow.
Good to see Chris Hamrick on there though.

Finally remembered what this reminds me of-- the 1989 RollerGames show. It was roller derby....then they'd skate around an alligator pit. then they'd have a "victory party" with a "live" band, like Warrant or Lita Ford.
or..it reminds me of Nitro in the Summer of 1999, when Megadeth, Some Country Singer and KISS all "performed" on Nitro.

Apparently Vampiro's "band" will be playing for some of these shows, and he has a hand in the booking and will be a top character. Joy.

A spot monkey match is about the right speed for MTV.

I'd love it if they wore those same monkey suits from PTL.

Apparently you haven't seen much work from Sydal recently. He's been pretty damn good, and not as spotty.

Not necessarily about Sydal, but you know, I can appreciate a good spot monkey. I like some diversity in a wrestling show, and not every match on a card should be a ***** classic. If you've got a spot monkey who can go out an hit his spots cleanly, keep it short and I can find it very entertaining.

Actually, now that I think about it. I don't think you can say that Evans OR Sydal would be a pure spot monkey. Both guys hit their spots clean and Evans is a while new breed of flyer. I'm not saying either of them is the best worker in the world, but they are much better than your average indy spot monkeys.
Spot matches are extremely fun when you're there live, but on tape or TV, they don't do much for me personally.

If kept short, I can definitely enjoy a good spot-fest as an appetizer to a more meaty main event.
I would consider both gus spot-monkeys, though they are both good at it. I think Sydal has started inching towards a more traditional style of working, but Evans seems content to go out and do some gymnastics.

The thing about Evans for me though is that he honestly has the ability to make guys look like a million bucks. Obviously that's his job, but he's gotten to the point where I would put him up there with guys like Mysterio/HBK/Bret Hart at making people look good. Now, I'm not saying he's the worker than any of those three are, but as far as selling and making people look like monsters there are few better in the business today as good as it as Evans has become.

In all honesty though, to me, the fact that he weighs about 135 detracts from that. Even Rey has a build that makes him look credible, so when he sells it means something. With skinny little guys like Evans, it wouldn't seem hard to make an opponent look strong.

I would agree with you........if that were the case. But Evans does it in a way that is unreal. Because of his athleticism he can go the extra step. He's the only guy in wrestling that can do some of the stuff that he does.....so that definately helps.
whitemilesdavis - July 12, 2006 04:50 PM (GMT)
I will add I have seen zero of Evans in '06.
Big F'N Swigg - July 20, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
Evans, to me, is a lot like Spike Dudley, with a gangsta twist. I used to not like him, mostly because I thought he was just a spot monkey. But the last few times I've seen him, he was entertaining as a character, he was entertaining with his work, and he made his opponents look good.
Not to mention, I've never seen anyone do anything he can do. Check out the next to last Dayton show. He did an AMAZING spot that started with him in the middle of the ring, and ended with him hitting a hurricanrana on BJ Whitmer OUTSIDE the ring.
jamiegeist - July 20, 2006 04:26 AM (GMT)
I've definitely become a bit of an Evans mark. He was on quite a tear over the last few ROH shows I watched, and is looking really good. He was headed to DragonGate last I knew, so not sure if he is back yet or not.
Just to toss it out there, he ranked #21 on my Top 100. I'm sure I'll catch hell for that one, but he does things I've never seen another human being do, doesn't blow spots, and is an entertaining wigger.
