Title: OVW Television 7-1-06
Mad Dog - July 11, 2006 03:52 PM (GMT)
Someone has been kind enough to post the OVW tv shows in segments on another board and I've been downloading them. The opening segment and match from this week's show is missing so I'm going to give you a few bonus reviews before hitting the actual show.
Aaron "The Idol" Stevens vs. Mikey Batts
This match aired on 5-20-06. Batts comes out with a chair and Stevens sneak attacks him while the ref tries to take the chair. Stevens pounds on Batts and then sends him into the corner. Batts jumps over the ropes and then slides between Stevens legs. Batts rams Stevens into the turnbuckle repeatedly, hits him with a dropkick and rolls him up for two. Batts gets another roll up for two. Batts comes off the ropes and gets another roll up for two. Batts hits the ropes but Stevens catches him with an elbow. Stevens hits a headbutt and covers for two. Batts fights out of the corner and takes Stevens down with a dropkick to the knee and then another to the back. Batts covers for two. Stevens rolls through on a cross body block and then nails Batts with a backbreaker and covers for two. Stevens tries to submit Batts with a hangman but Batts escapes. Back and forth until Batts hits a dropkick and covers for two. Stevens gains control with a chop to the throat and then hits an elbow in the corner and follows it up with a running knee. Stevens plays to the crowd and then taunts Batts. Batts fights back and hits a headbutt to the gut. Batts hits a flying forearm and then a dropkick. Batts comes off the ropes and then flips into a bulldog like Jerry Lynn does. Batts hits a DDT and covers for two. Batts gets the mount and just reigns down punches in the face of Stevens. Stevens bails to the outside and Batts follows. Batts pummels Stevens and then rolls him back in. Batts heads to the top but Stevens trips him up and puts him into a tree of woe. Stevens stomps Batts and goes for a baseball slide but Batts lifts himself up and Stevens is cotched on the ringpost. Batts hits a baseball slide kick to the face and Stevens falls to the outside. Batts argues with the ref and pushes him aside to follow but Stevens catches him with a chair and pins Batts for the pin. **, I liked this match a lot. It was only a little over six minutes but the action was frantic and it was a fun face underdog taking on the arrogant heel. It could've been better had Batts used a wider variety of moves but it wasn't a big deal.
WINNER: Aaron "The Idol" Stevens
Well on with the normal show says I...
OVW TV 7-1-06:
Vic Devine vs. Cody Runnels
Devine is doing a arrogant Hollywood type gimmick. I've actually never heard of either guy before so this should be interesting. They exchange hammerlocks until Cody gets a drop toe hold. Cody grabs a headlock. Vic gets Cody into the ropes to break up the hold. Lock up and Cody gets a headlock takedown. Vic escapes with a head scissor and they break it up. Cody gets another hammerlock and Vic backs him into the corner. Vic hits an elbow to the head as they break it up. Cody gets a kick in but Vic pummels him in the corner and chokes him on the ropes. They exchange punches and kicks until Vic gains control with a knee and a bodyslam. Vic covers for two. Vic hits a backbreaker and covers for two. Cody fights back but Vic cuts him off with an eye rake. Back and forth until Cody punishes Vic with punches. Cody goes for some move and Vic slams him. I have no idea what it was as Cody just kind of jumped into Vic's arms. Vic goes for a suplex and Cody rolls him up for the pin. 1/2*, I don't know what to say about this match. Cody Runnels appears to be fresh out of wrestling school. His offense was extremely basic and he did that student going for a basic move thing you see from really green guys. Vic seemed to be a decent heel but didn't get to show much. I will say as far as Cody Runnels goes that he does appear to have a decent amount of charisma.
WINNER: Cody Runnels
Backstage: Simon Dean is in Danny Davis office. He runs down Al Snow. He challenges Al Snow to a No DQ match at the Six Flags show. Pretty good promo. It's nice to see him doing something other than his WWE gimmick.
Los Locos vs. Kasey James
Los Locos are Raul and Ramon. James says that Roadkill got held up at the airport and asks for five minutes for his partner to arrive. The ref says no and the match begins. James hits the ring and fights both men off. He hits a double noggin knocker. 10 punches in the corner followed by a cross body block for two but the other member makes the save. They double team James and pummel him in the corner. James ducks a double clothesline and nails both Locos with clotheslines. Announcers finally help me tell them apart. James covers Raul but Ramon makes the save. Raul stomps on James while the ref forces Ramon to get onto the apron. They double team James in the corner and Ramon tags in. Ramon ducks down for a bodydrop and eats a boot from James. James goes for the tag but remembers that Roadkill isn't there. Ramon throws James into the corner and tags Raul in. Raul hits a snap mare and follows it up with a leg drop. James fights back but Raul regains control with an elbow to the head. James gets double teamed in the corner some more. James tries to fight out but gets double teamed. Ramon tags in and hits an elbow for two. Ramon uses a snap mare and then applies a neck crank. James fights out of the hold with elbows and punches but Ramon cuts him off with a face rake. Raul tags in and they double team James in the corner. Raul goes for a suplex but James escapes with a knee. James knocks Ramon off the apron and then levels Raul with a punch. James is too worn out to push his advantage further and Los Locos trap him in the corner again. Raul hits a snap mare and then drops an elbow to the head of James. Ramon tags in. Ramon applies the Gorey Special and Raul goes for a move but Roadkill trips him up. Roadkill enters the ring and cleans house on Los Locos. He whips both into the corner. He goes to get James for a doubleteam but James pushes him. They argue until Los Locos push James into Roadkill and then roll up James for the pinfall. *1/4, your typical handicap match. Not bad or anything but it was only about 5 minutes and was utterly forgettable.
WINNERS: Los Locos
Kasey James and Roadkill argue after the match.
Some woman named Sosay comes out. She's OVW's newest sports agent. She calls this guy a legendary daredevil. She introduces "Fearless" Jack Bull who's dressed like Eviel Kneivel and comes out to the theme of the 70s Superman movie. This is either going to be a classic or really bad.
"Fearless" Jack Bull vs. a jobber
Sosay badgers the jobber about how great Jack Bull is and Bull sneaks in and quickly rolls him up for the pin. Dud.
WINNER: Fearless Jack Bull
After the match Jack Bull pulls out a flask to celebrate while Sosay tries to block it from the view of the cameras. Bull tries to climb the ropes but he's too drunk to pull it off. I don't know what I thought of that. There's some definate potential there for a great comedy character. I'll guess I'll just have to wait until they use him a few more times.
Chet the Jet vs. Pat Buck
Buck attackes as Chet gets into the ring. Buck hits some uppercuts and then sends Chet into the ropes. Chet blocks a kick and bodyslams him for two. Buck regains control with a kick and a punch to the face. Buck hits a neckbreaker for two. Buck applies a headlock but Chet escapes with a snap mare. Chet chops Buck and levels him with a couple of clotheslines. Back and forth until Chet suplexes him for the pin. Dud, that was like a 1:40 total. Nothing filler match. Chet the Jet? Who thought that was a good name?
WINNER: Chet the Jet
Boris Alexiev and Mr. Strongko come out to double team Chet. Chet fights them off and brawls on the outside with Strongko. Alexiev stays in the ring and applies an armbar to Buck. Chet comes back and clears Alexiev out of the ring.
Armando Alejandro Estrada hypes up that Rey Misterio will defend the World Title against the winner against the winner of CM Punk/Seth Skyfire at the Six Flags show. He shows off the biggest cigar in the world.
CM Punk is backstage. He points out that he's the OVW Champion and that he should get the title shot. Decent enough promo.
No. 1 Contenders Match:
Seth Skyfire w/ Shelley vs. CM Punk
The Miz comes out and runs down both guys as not deserving the shot against Misterio. He berates Punk before getting a fist in his face. Pretty good promo I have to say. Lock up and Punk gets a headlock. Seth rolls him into a two count. Punk escapes but keeps the headlock. Seth powers out but Punk gets a single leg takedown. Punk goes back to the headlock and then covers for two. Test of strength leads to Seth getting a monkey flip and covering for two. Seth gets a wristlock and then uses an armdrag when Punk escapes. Punk ducks a kick and then gets into the ropes. Punk gets a monkey flip after a test of strength and tries to flip into a cover but Seth blocks. The exchange pinfall attempts. Seth ducks a corner charge from Punk and gets him with a monkey flip. Seth goes for a cross body block but nobodies home. Punk covers for two and goes for a second pin attempt. Seth rolls to the outside and it's commercial break time. As they come back Seth is laid out in the ring with Punk hovering over him. Punk goes for a vertical suplex but Seth rolls him up for two. They do that spot way too much in OVW. They exchange punches until Punk gets a cover for two. Punk applies a leg scissors around the waist to work over the injured ribs of Seth. Punks rolls him into a two count. Seth punches his way out of the hold. Punk covers for two. Punk pushes Seth into the ropes and jabs him in in the injured ribs. Punk does the same move again and then covers for two. Punk goes for the move again but Seth catches him with a knee this time. As Gorilla Monsoon would say he went to the well too many times on that one. Seth charges but Punk catches him with a knee and covers for two. Punk applies the abdominal stretch which is a smart move considering the storyline they're going for. Seth manages to reverse the hold. Punk tries to escapes with a hip toss but Seth rolls him up for two. Seth fights Punk off with elbows and punches and then hits a clothesline. Double axehandled followed by a spinning heel kick by Seth. Punk ducks a kick but charges into another one. Seth covers for two. Punk goes for an STO but Seth pushes him down and hits a standing moonsault for two. Punk gets hit with an enziguri and barely kicks out of a cover. Seth tries to go to the top rope but Punk catches him. Punk lifts him into a fireman's carry and hits a gutbuster for a near fall. Punk hits several kicks to the back and covers for two. Punk hits a rock bottom and then applies the anaconda vice. Seth manages to roll into the ropes to break the hold. Seth ducks some punches and then pulls Punk into double boots to the face. Punk slaps Seth a few times but Seth rolls him up and grabs a handful of tights to get the win. ***, pretty good match. A little slow due to the whole injured ribs storyline but still a good tv match.
WINNER: Seth Skyfire
Overall:
Decent enough show I guess. The bad stuff was kept pretty short and the main event was pretty good. The WWE's roster problems have really bled into OVW though. Guys who were mid-carders or tag team wrestlers just a year ago are upper mid-carders now. I'm sorry but Seth Skyfire isn't a top of the card guy. He's nothing special and it shows how decimated the roster is that he's getting the kind of push that he is.
There's a lot coming up. I have an episode of Mid-South television. 2 more episodes of OVW, some Deep South Wrestling and potentially 4 episodes of CWF Mid-Atlantic should I decide to do more reviews.
whitemilesdavis - July 11, 2006 04:12 PM (GMT)
I want to see the CWF reviews.
Mad Dog - July 16, 2006 10:48 PM (GMT)
Ha, I'm a total retard. Cody Runnels is actually a Dusty Rhodes spawn. The name should've been a dead give away.
whitemilesdavis - July 19, 2006 04:37 PM (GMT)
So Cody doesn't see quite ready yet?
Mad Dog - July 19, 2006 04:45 PM (GMT)
If I had to guess he's seen less than a year of ring time, maybe even less than six months. They're taking a smart route with him. Short matches where he sells for most of it before picking up the win. He's got loads of charisma though. I'll probably do another review of OVW this week.
whitemilesdavis - July 19, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
I've seen a picture of him, but haven't seen him in action. I am happy he's getting into the business though. I wonder how long it'll be until Reid Flair gets into it.
Mad Dog - July 19, 2006 05:00 PM (GMT)
He definately has star potential as long as the WWF doesn't try and bring him up too soon. He needs to stay in OVW for 3 years at least.
