Title: Why I don't read X-Men anymore

The new creative team of Mike Carey and Chris Bachalo are taking over the X-Men and they are going supernova with the most volatile assemblage of X-Men yet.
The shocking new X-Men team will be made up of Rogue, Iceman, Mystique, Cable, and Cannonball. Each of these characters has a past history with one another and much of it isn't good. Mothers, daughters, teachers, and students must adapt to becoming teammates.
Plus, what is Sabretooth doing hanging around the X-Men? And what could possibly have the man who goes toe-to-toe with Wolverine on a regular basis scared stiff?
In part one of SUPER NOVAS, an all-new threat rises up to challenge the X-Men and it's up to this new X-team to gel together quick, or else they'll end up nothing more than a memorial plaque in the hallowed halls of Xavier. And what do the mysterious group known as the Children have to do with it?
Also, X-Men #188 features an 8-page bonus story featuring the first appearance of the Masked Marvel.
It's the start of an all-new era in X-history in X-Men #188. Don't miss out on this X-traordinary beginning. t. |
Seriously, every time they get new writers it seems like its "An Explosive new Team!"
Fuck that. Stick with a team. Forever. Shifting like this just annoys the piss out of me.
SamoaRowe - June 20, 2006 05:31 AM (GMT)
Can I assume that this will be taking place under Uncanny X-Men, since that's where Bachalo currently is?
And I agree. They need to have some consistent team member placements. That, and having characters like Mystique and Juggernault on the good guys side has never sat well with me, I like them evil and out of control.
Mad Dog - June 20, 2006 06:36 AM (GMT)
Juggernaugt has been a much better developed character as a hero. I think him going back at this point would be counter-productive. I believe this book is going to be X-Men. The Uncanny team is going to have Xavier and they'll be going into space.
SamoaRowe - June 20, 2006 06:54 AM (GMT)
Wonderful.
Juggernault "turned face" in the time I've been away, so I really don't know the circumstances of it happening. Care to fill me in?
Mad Dog - June 20, 2006 07:08 AM (GMT)
It's been several years but I'll explain from what I remember. During Morrison days secondary mutations started. Beast became more lion like, Emma Frost got diamond skin she could use, etc. So Juggernaut's powers were kind of fading out due to losing favor with Cyttorak. Bad timing being Black Tom's secondary mutation happened and he attacked Juggernaut. So the X-Men come to his rescue and he ends up back at the Mansion with them.
So at first it was going to be temporary. But he meets a kid named Sammy and this kind of leads to him sticking around a bit. Sammy makes a positive impact in his life and he makes up with Xavier. Later on he goes on trial but Xavier talks them into releasing Juggernaugt to his school. He also has a one night stand with She Hulk right before and they have a fight where she gets through to him about taking responsibility for his life. He comments around this time about the pointlessness of his old life and how he wants something different.
So right after this a new Brotherhood of Mutants surfaces. He decides to infiltrate them. Sammy unfortunately stumbles upon them and thinks he's betrayed the X-Men. Black Tom kills the kid and his last words are telling Juggernaugt not to touch him and that he hates him. So Juggernaut goes nuts and attacks the Brotherhood. This ends up with him and one of the Exiles getting sucked into the second Xorn's head. He did this because he wanted to be a hero for Sammy.
So he ends up on Mojoworld, escapes and joined the newly formed Excalibur. In the most recent issue he confronted Black Tom and talked him into surrendering to the law.

The saga of Juggernault sounds like it was handled pretty well. Thanks for filling me in.
Mad Dog - June 20, 2006 07:15 AM (GMT)
Austen's run on Uncanny was pretty bad but I can almost forgive his run because he did so much with Juggernaut. He really is a much more fleshed out character now.

Here's another question: what happened to Maggot and Celia Reyes? They were both being introduced and pushed heavily around the time I stopped reading.
eStragand - June 20, 2006 04:58 PM (GMT)
Quick answer: their pushes failed. Both made a few random appearances over the next few years, though.
I think Maggot's dead and Dr. Reyes was de-powered as a result of the Scarlet Witch's "House of M/No More Mutants" thing.

Why can't they leave space to the Fantastic Four?

'Cuz it's a long part of their history and the most memorable X-men story occurred in space. So every three or four years they feel obligated to toss the X-men back into space.
Now, Alpha Flight, Defenders or New Warriors in space...yeah, that'd be a mismatch.
Big F'N Swigg - June 21, 2006 02:00 PM (GMT)
Is Claremont writing it? Because I might forgive if he is
SamoaRowe - June 21, 2006 02:54 PM (GMT)
Merh... I usually don't care for "X-Men in space" stories unless it involves Jean Grey attempting to destroy the universe. Does this mean they're dropping the current team angle with Psylocke, Marvel Girl, and Nightcrawler, or are those same going into space for a bit.
And Claremont writing does give me hope.

Claremont has been replaced by the New Messiah of comic books, Ed Brubaker
Mad Dog - June 22, 2006 01:06 AM (GMT)
Claremont is doing New Excalibur and Exiles currently. Though he's had some health issues as of late.
D.A.V.E. - June 22, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
He's doing neither, actually. Frank Tieri is writing New Excalibur, but Claremont has a hand in the plotting (although Tieri is fast throwing stuff leftover from Weapon X into the book), and Bedard is staying on Exiles, with possible Claremont plotting, for the forseeable future.
Claremont's next project, which he won't start until he's up to it, and Marvel won't solicit until it's near ready, is something called GeNEXT, which takes the position of the X-Men growing old in realtime and seeing how things go. His insistence on taking his last Jim Lee issue and ignoring everything since then, means I'm not going to check the book out.

Is that the basic premise of the series? Meaning he'll pick-up continuity from 1991 when he was suddenly "fired" from the X-men books?
That sounds like a fanboy wanking idea...since the stuff that's come out since 1991 HAS happened. You could draw a line and say that 1991 is when the X-men began to slide with the stupid blue & gold teams.
I haven't really cared for the X-men since the split, but I don't want yet another "alternate continuity" take on all things X. Plus, it seems like the only reason he's allowed to do it is because he's the Granddaddy of the New X-men. Sounds lame.
D.A.V.E. - June 22, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
Quick survey? Did anyone like any X-Men books between 1991 and Grant Morrison. Because I can't think of any. Mutant X for chrissakes.
eStragand - June 22, 2006 10:44 PM (GMT)
I'd go back a year, as I think X-men really began to slide with "The X-tinction Agenda"...a big clusterfrick of a story involving Cameron Hodge and Genosha.
The "Age of Apocolypse" will probably get some love. Those were interesting and despite what folks might tell you, it was fairly easy to follow at the time. I was bummed that a few of the concepts didn't transfer over to the mainstream Marvel U. Especially Sunfire's re-design.
D.A.V.E. - June 22, 2006 10:48 PM (GMT)
I actually recently ordered the Age Of Apocalypse book one, of the re-collection Marvel did recently off Amazon. It should get here next week.
I feel ridiculous typing what I typed above. I'm heading on a 3 hour train journay tomorrow, and sitting on top of a pile of stuff to go in a bag, is a "Origin Of Generation X" Trade i picked up a few weeks ago but never read.
Mad Dog - June 23, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
Honestly, I didn't even like Morrison's run on New X-Men very much after the first couple of arcs.
D.A.V.E. - June 25, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
I'm...ambivilent, aout it, but I'd really like to hear other people's opinion of the stuff before i go piss someone off
Big F'N Swigg - June 26, 2006 01:10 AM (GMT)
Other than "Age of Apocalypse" and the Onslaught stuff, I haven't been able to get into X-Men. And it's mostly because as soon as I get into a team, they shift them. Either that, or I can't tell the difference between the books
