PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.
The Steelers confirmed the accident for WTAE Channel 4 Action News.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.
A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.
Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the Tribune-Review.
Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.
Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries. |
Hopefully he's alright, but this was brought to his attention last year as Winslow for the Browns got injured in a motorcycle accident. WEAR A HELMET.
I've also heard that this was an extremely bad accident..........hopefully, he pulls through.

You're going to hate me for this but he I can't feel sorry for him at all over this. They wanted him to stop riding after Winslow's accident and he wouldn't listen.

Shit, I don't hate you at all. It was a fucking bonehead thing to do. I actually agree with you. I just hope that he's actually okay and that this won't be that big of a deal. Too early to tell though...

Yeah, but a helmet won't necessarily protect your arms, legs, pelvis or back. That's the main reason alot of bikers skip 'em. They figure "aw hell, if I get nailed, it ain't gonna' be my HEAD".
Roethlisberger's just out there living his life and having a good time. Same thing alot of us would do. Now, if he was going all Kneivel and jumping his bike over 20 busses, then you could take him to court for being a MORON.
Strange, but true: some guys have safety clauses in their contracts. Elway had a clause in his contract that, among other things, he wasn't allowed to go skiing.

Fuck that. I see your point on the helmet thing as I feel that if you don't want to wear one........you shouldn't have to. But you'd think a guy that makes millions of dollars and is a starting QB in the NFL that he'd have enough sense to at least wear a helmet when he's riding on a street. My point is it worth putting your life and career on the line when you have THAT much to lose?

See, I heard his head nailed the windshield. There's no point to not wearing a helmet, as far as I'm concerned, and he really has to when the team that's paying him millions asks him to.

Reportedly he DID have a clause to not engaged in dangerous activities such as Motorcycle riding. However, if takes a real dick to try and bust a guy for that, especially when he just took you to the Super Bowl. Much like the Chicago Bulls and Jason Williams a few years ago, I'm sure they won't even bring it up, and just hope he does well.
I haven't heard much, since I just got home from work -- but is this like a "might not make the Steelers opener" kind of thing, or a "might not live" kind of thing?

As of right now everything is unknown. He has lost a lot of teeth, has a laceration to his head, and extensive knee damage according to local reports. So I'm assuming that this could be anything from he's out of the opener to he's never going to play again.

Charlie Batch is taking warm-up snaps from center, right now. The knee thing would potentially have the most long-term dehabilitating effects. But they also said that a plastic surgeon is being called in. Ouch.
Oh yeah, and I haven't mentioned how much I love Terry Bradshaw in awhile, so here's another affirmation:

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.
Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

I think his career is done. I think there might be a brief attempted comeback in 2 year but his injuries sound really bad. I mean both knees are fucked up now.
dynamite kido - June 13, 2006 12:49 PM (GMT)
Apparently he's not as hurt as bad as they thought so far. But I guess today and tomorrow will be the days that are going to decide to what extent he's hurt.
Mad Dog - June 13, 2006 02:27 PM (GMT)
I think it'll probably be a week before we know the full extent. He could have some head injuries that haven't surfaced yet.
