Description: What are you watching?

Watching Steamboat in Japan. Being a big Steamboat mark, I've always found it odd when I see someone online say that he "looked lost" in his Japanese matches. It's always that same comment too. So I decided to check it out for myself, and I'm convinced one guy saw one bad Steamboat match and 100 other wannabes just copied what he said. This was a really fun tape actually, and shows Steamboat in a different light than he is usually seen.

My favorite match on the tape is one against The Sheik. It is a complete wild brawl, and Steamboat more than holds his own. Lots of blood and crowd action. It really makes me wish Steamboat had done more like this in the states.

I bet the match people saw that said he looked lost was the one against Tiger Mask. It wasn't a terrible match but it was kind of bland. I would blame it more on a very green Misawa. Also, Steamboat tried to wrestle the same match against TM that he wrestled against Flair and it just didn't work. Like I said though, still not terrible.

Steamboat/Sheik??? I wanna see that fucker!

I think the Steamboat being lost has a lot to do with that match against TM, WMD. Not that I agree with it, but I could see how someone who didn't see the majority of Steamboat's work over there could come to the conclusion of....

whitemilesdavis - June 2, 2006 01:13 PM (GMT)
Watched it again last night. The Tiger Mask match really picks up after 10 - 15 minutes. It does start off slooowww, but starting to like it , more. Also, a crazy brawl with Snuka that's nearly as fun as The Sheik match. Steamboat loses it, attacks the ref and gets disqualified. Stuff you'd never see from Steamboat in the US. Also a great match with Tenryu on there. I'm loving this tape.

Watched a little bit of Forever Hardcore again last night. It's really entertaining. New Jack is hilarious and incredibly scary at the same time. Sandman is also very entertaining (he's probably crocked), but it really made me want to see the new ECW just to see these characters again. If you haven't watched Forever Hardcore, I highly reccomend picking it up.

I just ignore things like that. People that hate on Steamboat are doing it because they're puro elitist or they're trying to be uber-smarky by hating on a popular figure.

Real F'n Show - June 4, 2006 05:08 PM (GMT)
Oddly enough, I just watched a Steamboat vs. Jumbo match. Really good stuff from two of the greatest of all time.

I really wanna see this Steamboat/Sheik match now.

whitemilesdavis - June 5, 2006 12:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah, you gotta find that one. You know to be known as a "bad worker", Sheik could put on all kinds of fun matches.

Real F'n Show - June 5, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
Is the Jumbo match on your comp, WMD?

whitemilesdavis - June 5, 2006 11:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah. Nice 30 minute draw. It's a little overshadowed by the brawls on the tape, but a perfectly fine match in its own right.

Real F'n Show - June 6, 2006 04:43 PM (GMT)
Picked up TNA's Samoa Joe DVD this morning on the way home from the dentist. I'll probably be watching that this afternoon.

jamiegeist - June 6, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
You go to the Dentist alot.

Twice a year. The other time was for wisdom teeth.

Got the Dusty set last night. I had to play so I was real late getting home. Only watched a few minutes of the feature, but I'm really looking forward to watching the whole thing now.

WCW Spring Stampede 1994, a vastly underrated show featuring a good solid card of: Plillman/Regal, Austin/Muta, Rick Rude/Sting,

And the main event of Flair/Steamboat (not as good as their match from Chi-Town Rumble, but still good), and an amazingly violent (for 1994 anyway) brawl between the Nasty Boys/Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne that sees Jack take a wicked bump off the ramp.

Good stuff.

And might I add, God bless PWTorrents.

Real F'n Show - June 11, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
Watched a Dynamite Kid/Stan Hansen match this morning. Not as good as you would expect from these two, but still a perfectly acceptable 10 minute match with Hansen obviously controlling the majority of it with DK getting in his hope spots, including a nearfall off the diving headbutt. Hansen wins with the lariat.

Also just watched Necro Butcher vs. Low Ki from IWA-MS earlier this year and loved it. Started off hot with the two beating the shit out of each other in a pile of streamers thrown to start the match. After that it's 95% Low Ki as he just pummels Necro with stiff kicks and stomps. Necro gets a few good shots in including some sick punches and forearms before Low Ki says fuck it and decides to kill Necro with a top rope double stomp to Necro's back as he is leaning over the middle rope. Ki follows that up with a tree-of-woe double stomp to Necro who is propped up on a table in an awesome fucking spot. Ki applies the dragon clutch and Necro is already out of it so Ki gets the pass out win. Good stuff.

I got the Dusty Rhodes DVD today and watched the whole thing. Pretty good. My only complaint is that HHH always has to give his 2 cents on these things.

Mad Dog - June 18, 2006 10:57 PM (GMT)
The Dusty DVD has gotten me wanting some old school stuff so I've been watching the Wrestling Gold DVDs. If you don't own this set... GET IT!!! Dave Meltzer and Jim Cornette's commentary alone makes this worth the cost.

Mad Dog - June 19, 2006 08:38 PM (GMT)
I took the plunge and bought that XWF DVD. I was in the mood for some crappy wrestling and this seemed to fit the bill with the possibility of having some decent matches buried in the garbage. I'll probably do reviews next week.

whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 12:58 PM (GMT)
I'm not that into the Dusty DVD. The promos are good, and some of the matches are OK. I found the feature to be quite boring. I've got some matches from Dusty that were really good bloody brawls, but most of what is on here just falls short for me.

Mad Dog - June 21, 2006 01:09 PM (GMT)
I think that was the best you were going to get from a Dusty Rhodes set.

whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 01:19 PM (GMT)
No, I've watched a lot of Dusty over the years, and generally I defend his work. I think one issue would be video quality of some of the older arena matches. Also, just the layout of the whole thing. It more gave a breif life history of Dusty rather than delve into the major angles. I would have rather seen it laid out like Flair's disc where several major feuds were given ample time.

Mad Dog - June 21, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I found that to be disappointing and they obsessed on his WWF work way too much. But match wise I was happy with it. His best work was with Dick Murdoch IMO and they gave us 3 of those. The only match that really bugged me was his ECW match with Corino. They could've found something better.

whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 01:39 PM (GMT)
Well, I like that they finally acknowledged Corino's existence, but yeah, not a good match. My least favorite of the bunch was the Billy Graham cowrope match. Just terrible.

I think they wanted to make the disc into this nice story about him and Dustin, but as far as on screen stuff goes, there just wasn't much to it.

dynamite kido - June 21, 2006 03:10 PM (GMT)
Wow, i'm surprised to hear that about the Dusty DVD. I've been wanting to pick it up pretty badly lately, but the fundage is low until I get paid.

whitemilesdavis - June 26, 2006 03:47 PM (GMT)
I just for the first time last night watched ECW One Night Stand from last year, and I've got to say, what a great show!

Lance Storm vs. Jericho - Here are two guys I really need to see back in the ring. Great for an opening match. I haven't heard it get much praise, but I really enjoyed it.

Super Crazy vs. Tajiri vs. Little Guido - Another very fun match. Since when did Super Crazy become Satoru Sayama circa 1983. Man, he just looked incredible in this match.

Rey vs. Psichosis - Just didn't click. Rey has slowed down, and Cosis just doesn't seem to have it any more.

Sabu vs. Rhino - OK, fun match. Nothing blow-away great, but not bad.

Benoit vs. Eddie - I had forgotten this match was on here. It was really sad seeing one of my top 5 favorite wrestlers ever, and knowing that he is gone. Perfectly acceptable match here, maybe not as much as you might have expected from these two, but good to see nonetheless.

Awesome vs. Tanaka - Amazing how these guys click together. Another fantastic match, and the fact that nether of them died is astounding in its own right.

Dudleys vs. Dreamer and Sandman didn't do a lot for me, but every guy worked hard and bled buckets.

The melee at the end was fun, especially keeping an eye on JBL pummeling Meanie.

whitemilesdavis - June 28, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
The JBL commentary is the hidden jewel on the disc.

"B14...Bingo!"

QUOTE (whitemilesdavis @ Jun 28 2006, 01:22 PM)
The JBL commentary is the hidden jewel on the disc.

"B14...Bingo!"

Not to mention he has the quote of the show.

"I got a ticket, ya little Mexican!"

whitemilesdavis - June 28, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
That was good, and there were too many to count during Awesome / Tanaka -

"My doorman is dead."
