Title: The Mighty Marvel Reading Project

Mad Dog - May 29, 2006 12:54 AM (GMT)
This is what I'm currently working on with my downloading and purchases. Basically I'm going to get entire runs of Marvel books and then start reading them in order. So like June 1970 would come around and I'd read all of the books from that month and when finished would move on to the next month.

I'm hoping to start this hopefully in July but August is probably a more likely starting date. I need to find a copy of the Fantastic Four 40 Year Collection before I start. It's too important of a book to skip.

Due to my previous readings the official start month for me will be cover issue July 1970. My goal at this moment is to do a month a week. I might do more like 2 months a week until I hit the late 70s. Here are the series that I'm aiming to have for this:

Avengers
Amazing Spider-Man
Spectacular Spider-Man
Web of Spider-Man
Spider-Man
Sensational Spider-Man
Captain America
Daredevil
Iron Man
Fantastic Four
Uncanny X-Men
New Mutants
X-Factor
Excalibur
Thunderbolts
Wolverine
Incredible Hulk

I'm also hoping to add the Defenders, Avengers West Coast and maybe the Silver Surfer. Thor probably won't be included. If there are any books you feel should be added please toss them into the pile and I'll see if I can get them. Just note that it was to be in 616 Marvel continuity.

Yes, I am very aware of how much of a nerd I sound like right now.

Jesus... That's quite an undertaking. Have fun with that. I'd add something, but it's been demonstrated time and time over, I know all of nothing about Marvel.

Mad Dog - May 29, 2006 02:16 AM (GMT)
I take it back on Thor. I'll try and get the comics for this as well.

There's a few early-to-mid 70's anthology books that might have single issues worth checking out. I'm thinking of "Amazing Adventures" with Beast, Inhumans and Black Widow. "Strange Tales" and "Dr. Strange" has some oddball continuity. The Jim Streranko Nick Fury issues in "Strange Tales" and "Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD" are highly regarded. "Champions" had all of 18 issues, so it wont hurt ya'. "Captain Marvel" has some good cosmic stuff that was often used in FF, Thor and Avengers.

And Sweet Christmas! Whattabout "Luke Cage: Hero for Hire/ Power Man/ Power Man & Iron Fist"? If you're going through the 70's you NEED that book! I'm also a Micronauts mark, so I'd recommend them as well (yes, they're in mainstream Marvel U-- met the FF, Ant-man, X-men, Plant Man, Capt. Universe, Psycho Man, Man-Thing, Arcade and others). But in the grand scheme of Marvel continuity, the Micronauts are pretty worthless.

You could probably skip the "Monster" books..unless you REALLY want to read the first appearance of Moon Knight in "Werewolf by Night". But you'll miss Brother Voodoo....

"Marvel Team-Up" and "Marvel Two-in-One" aren't essential, but if you can get 'em, they're good 70's stuff. "Team-up" had the same formula in almost every book, but "Two-in-one" really developed the Thing.

Good call on Power Man and Iron Fist. I'll add that if I can get the entire run. I'll look into Marvel Team-Up and Champions as well. Not sure about Captain Marvel, I do have the series from the 90s though. Micronauts I'll try to add.

-It's not essential, but "Invaders" is worth checking out. I always look for 'em, cheap nowadays.

-70's Captain Marvel is much better than the 90's series. Rick Jones played a major part, and you kinda' have to follow him if you're going through old Marvel (well, skip his years with ROM).

-Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel had alot of forgettable stuff, but are noteworthy because I believe they're the first solo female books in Marvel history. She-Hulk's first series came later, but isn't worth reading.

-Ghost Rider, Master of Kung Fu, Journey Into Fear, Sgt. Fury and his Howlin' Commandoes and others are 100% skippable.

Big F'N Swigg - May 30, 2006 01:33 AM (GMT)
Did Moon Knight's series first pop up in the late 70's?

eStragand - May 30, 2006 03:51 AM (GMT)
I think his solo title wasn't until 1980. He went direct-only along with Ka-Zar and Micronauts, around 1982. Think the first series lasted until 84 or 85.

They had a second series in 1985 or 1986. It was supposed to be a second ongoing series, but after the 6th issue was out, it suddenly became a "6 issue limited series". Riiiiight.

I ordered the Fantastic Four and X-Men DVD Collections today. Got a pretty good deal on those. So now all that's left is reading about 50 issues of Daredevil and a ton of FF issues.

I really don't want to bother with books like Ghost Rider and Punisher but I probably should. Nothing about Ghost Rider has ever been of interest to me though.

So..any update on this?

Ghost Rider's 70's series was completely different from the 90's series. They tried to make him an actual superhero and he even shacked up with Karen Page for a bit.

I'm still working on finding some things here and there. Ghost Rider is still one of the ones I'm trying to find.

Mad Dog - September 3, 2006 12:13 AM (GMT)
Got the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider series downloaded. It came with Champions which I was having some trouble getting.

Mad Dog - September 25, 2006 02:24 AM (GMT)
Finally got my hands on the Defenders.
