Title: Slammiversary Discussion
Big F'N Swigg - May 16, 2006 02:37 PM (GMT)
*NWA champion Christian Cage defending the belt in a King of the Mountain match against Ron Killings, Abyss, and two more competitors to be named. I expect the two competitors to be Sting and Jeff Jarrett.
*Team 3D vs. The James Gang (stipulation to be revealed)
*Rhino vs. Bobby Roode and Scott D'Amore - Handicap Match
*TNA X-Division champion Samoa Joe vs. Scott Steiner
*Kevin Nash vs. Chris Sabin (likely)
*NWA Tag Team champions America's Most Wanted vs. AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels (likely)

Didn't we just see 3 of those matches on the last PPV? And Joe vs. Steiner is going to SUCK. No one is good enough to get a good match out of Steiner these days.
3 years since the first, and I still don't know the rules of KOTM. It's like a half-assed version of a ladder and penalty box match, right?
jamiegeist - May 16, 2006 06:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I don't have a clue how a King of the Mountain match actually works.
And this is the problem with Monthly PPVs. To build a decent feud you have to put the same matches on 2 or 3 straight PPVs, yet people start to bitch because they're paying 30 bucks to see the same matchup every month.
Quite a conundrum.
Scrooge McSuck - May 16, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
I still think TNA should cut down the PPV's to 6 a year. They only have 4 hours of TV a month, and have shit for time to build up anything. 6 PPV's allows different matches and less chance of repeated booking.
WWE can get away with doing this because they have 4 hours of TV a week (and 2 seperate rosters), not including when they had Heat/Velocity to pimp things. Plus, even with the 16 PPV's a year, all of them do at least 200,000 buys, so they are making a nice profit on all of them.
whitemilesdavis - May 16, 2006 06:56 PM (GMT)
Keep in mind, though, TNA has 1 source of income. PPV's.

Don't be so quick to hate. Although I'm not expecting a classic, judging from their tag match at the last PPV Joe/Steiner might actually be an alright match.
Real F'n Show - June 4, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
Steiner's been fucking awesome lately. Best heel in TNA. The way he was throwing Don West around on iMPACT! was great and he's been really motivated since coming to TNA. He's just a guy that wants to beat the shit out of you and be a cocky asshole while he's doing it, while Joe wants to beat the shit out of you, but instead of being a cocky asshole, he just goes about his business. I'm looking forward to the match. The rest of the PPV, not so much.
dynamite kido - June 4, 2006 07:16 PM (GMT)
Honestly, I'm diggin the way that they are building Joe/Steiner. I'm just hoping that Joe can work some magic and make them have a decent/good match.
Real F'n Show - June 5, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
I can see a really fun 12 minute match. Anything longer than that could be a mess.

exactly......hopefully they don't go longer...

Anyone shelling out the cash for this one?

I would have to say that last nights PPV was a damn solid show overall.
Anyone else watch?
whitemilesdavis - June 19, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
jamiegeist - June 19, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
Just read about it. I've heard so many varying reports from "OMG! Worst PPV evAR!" to "Great solid show with good action".
The main event ending sounds downright silly, and I hate Hebner finishes. It would have made about 100 times more sense to use Slick Johnson, who at least has been involved in all this new Director of Authority stuff.
dynamite kido - June 19, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
On the preshow last night they had Team Canada (Eric Young/A1) vs. The Naturals in a quick match. Nothing really to speak of, but Shane Douglas came out with the pep talk to The Naturals after they lost the match.
Rating - 1/2*
Winner - Team Canada
Now it was time for the opening matchup for the PPV between TEAM 3D vs. THE JAMES GANG. This was actually a pretty good ECW style brawl (the match was actually billed as a "Bingo Hall Brawl") with both sides taking a fair share of offense. Billy Gunn really held his weight in this one (yeah, I was surprised too) getting hiptossed onto a guardrail and getting 3D'd through a table for the loss. Plenty of color going on in this one as well.
Winner Team 3D
Rating - ***
Up next was time for the Handicap matchup with Scott D'Amore/Bobby Roode vs. Rhino. Rhino and Roode had a pretty solid PPV matchup last month and I was interested on seeing what they would do this time with D'Amore in the mix. This match was nothing too bad and D'Amore did what he had to in the match to not ruin it. Roode did the majority of the in ring work only to have D'Amore come in when Rhino had already been incapacitated. Overall pretty solid match.
Winner - Rhino
Rating - **1/2
Now they went with the X-Division Ranking matchup. The participants included Senshi (aka Low Ki), Sonjay, Petey Williams, Lethal, Shark Boy, and last but not least..............Alex Shelley. This one saw solid action from all parts and I knew going into this match that if they wanted it to be good, it needed time. And that's exactly what TNA decided to give it. There wasn't any eliminations in the match until about 11 minutes in when Shark boy was pinned. From there it was a free for all among the remaining wrestlers and this was a pretty damn good match. Good showings from everyone involved and they ALL had their working boots on for this match. Perfect example of what they should be doing with the remainder of the x-division when Joe's off fighting outside of the division itself. We saw Senshi get the vitory when he pinned Sonjay as they were the remaining two.
Winner and #1 Contender for the X-Division title - Senshi
Rating - ***1/2
Now it was time for Kevin Nash to make his return to TNA against Chris Sabin. Overall I wasn't expecting much from this match and basically...........that's what I got. Sabin worked hard for Nash and I was actually surprised to see Nash out there selling for him. Then again, it was all muffed to fuck when Nash actually won the match. Granted it was with TONS of interference on Alex Shelley's part, but this wasn't what should have happened.
Winner - Kevin Nash
Rating - **
Next up would be what I would consider the match of the night. AJ/Daniels getting their last NWA World Tag Team Title shot against James Storm and Chris Harris................America's Most Wanted. This was an EXCELLENT tag team contest with near falls, good heel work by AMW, AJ/Daniels equalizer for Gail Kim being a very manly looking woman, and some pretty damn good in ring work from everyone. This match looked to be overbooked only to return to form and actually get a decent finish. AJ/Daniels pull this out with one hell of a finishing sequence to get the duke (you NEED to see this finish if you can, it was hella cool).
Winner and NEW NWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS - AJ Styles/Christopher Daniels.
Rating - ****
Now it was time for a match that I would have never thought would have been good...........but it was. Joe/Steiner is a match that I will fully admit had TNA pull the mark out of me. The promo's were BADASS, the story was good, and the stage was set. For two of wrestling's so called "Badass" guys to get in the ring and get it on. The big fight atmosphere was booming through the impact zone as this one got started and only escalated from there. The match started with Steiner actually OUT WRESTLING Joe. Then it got to the point were Joe had enough and started beating the hell out of Scotty. This match was definately of the "Clash of the Titans" variety and to me it honestly worked on all levels. I wasn't big on the finish (It was basically Steiner running at joe and joe catching him in a powerslam and pinning him) especially after both guys escaped from each others finishers. But I must say that it was a LOT better than what I had expected....
Winner - Samoa Joe
Rating - ***1/2
Now it was time for the main event of the evening.............aka the King of the Mountain match. Earlier on in the evening they announced that the new face of TNA/Commissioner/President/etc would be none other than Jim Cornette. Cornette came out and gave an impressive interview basically stating that he wouldn't be pushed around or manipulated like prior TNA managments have. Nice to see Corny here finally. Anyway, the main event would be what you would expect with guys fighting all over the place. There were a few big spots (nothing REALLY spectacular) and an overall solid main event. But the end of the match saw Jeff Jarrett get the title hung above the ring only to have them go off of the air without a champion. This happened because that at the time Jarrett was hanging the belt he should have been in the cage because he was just pinned prior to it happening. Cornette then came out to get the title and had it in his hands as the PPV went off. There's expected to be an announcement this Thursday about it on Impact.
Winner - Jeff Jarrett?
Rating - ***1/4
Quick Match Results:
whitemilesdavis - June 19, 2006 04:58 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the review. Sounds good except for the main. I would love to see Steiner and Joe in an extended feud. Those two could be elevating the world title right now.
jamiegeist - June 19, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
You know, even though a non-finish to a PPV should be unforgivable, they have managed to create their first cliffhanger, which is good.
And Joe won with the powerslam? That is awesome. He snaps that thing off so hard and awesome that I'd been waiting for someone to get pinned by it.
I'm downloading the show right now, and your review got me amped to check it out.
So, they announced that Joe would defend the X Title this week on Impact. Would I be right to assume the #1 contender will be getting that title shot?
Ki v Joe?
whitemilesdavis - June 19, 2006 05:18 PM (GMT)
Doubtful. I'd think they'd build to that.
dynamite kido - June 19, 2006 06:32 PM (GMT)
I would think doubtful too, but if they did it all they would have to do is have Steiner interfere and their feud can continue while Joe moves on without the title.
Then again at the PPV last night Monty Brown hinted in an interview that he and Joe could be feuding next as he called him out during it.
Not the big match feel that Joe/Steiner had, but it also could have potential.
jamiegeist - June 20, 2006 08:04 AM (GMT)
Just watching Slammiversary. I'll finish tomorrow, but I have to comment thus far:
James Gang v 3D
Fun, fun brawl with good work by everyone. Tons better than I thought it had a chance to be. Loved the cold open with them brawling out of the entranceway as well.
Rhino v Roode & D'Amore.
I would never guessed D'Amore would have skills even close to that. This was an entertaining match. The heat segment on Rhino might have been a little long, but this is pretty much as good as a handicap match gets. D'Amore came off very strong, which probably isn't a good thing. Very surprised, again.
X-Division Contenders Match
So now supposedly Low Ki is the #1 contender, and Joe will defend on Impact. I'm hoping they at least ADDRESS this. Joe shouldn't be defending against anyone, when a #1 contender has been named. Anyway, the match was a fucking great spot fest. Low Ki continues to nip at Joe's heels for my favorite worker right now. The fact that they'll lock up in the near future has me VERY happy. The Ghetto Stomp is the most badass finish in wrestling today. I just love any version of the double foot stomp. Me = Low Ki mark. Loved his rifle dropkick into the corner too. Just pretty much loved it all, except Shelley losing so early.
Which was made up for by Shelley's AWESOME post-match promo. "It was a tough battle. I don't know if you were watching the monitor, but there were like 10, 20 guys out there. Some of them had knifes, I think I saw a few gatts....you know, guns. You might not have saw, the camera adds 15 pounds..."
Goddam. That was a great promo. I love Alex Shelley.
Nash v Sabin was inoffensive and fun. The crowd turning on Sabin is so lame though. Sometimes I wish fans could just be good fans and stop trying to be cool and smart. Good match though, and Nash sold a ton of Sabin's offense. Love seeing Nash up in the cradle shock. Shelley v Sabin should definitely be on the next PPV.
Tag Title Match was GREAT. Thing was hot from start to finish. Daniels especially was controlling alot of the match very well. Loved the comedy spots in the beginning with the drop toehold, and then it breaks into a brawl, and some giant crossdresser kills Gail Kim with a chokeslam. I'm glad they went back to a match from the overbooking, instead of going straight home from it. Great match.
Now, on to Joe-Steiner. Love the video package, even though I've seen it before. This was actually also ALOT better than I'd thought it would be. Steiner held his own, and didn't look bad at all, aside from the selling of the Choke. Really, I just didn't like the booking of the Choke. That thing has destroyed everyone, and Steiner just kind of walked out of it. I liked the quick finish, even though Steiner missed the ropes on the stun gun. Steiner's half nelson suplex was AWESOME, and this thing was very enjoyable.
Now on to the Main Event. Holy crap was this a clusterfuck. I don't like the rules, the penalty box, or any of that shit, but they had some entertaining moments. Sting diving off the box was cool. Abyss through the tables was nice. Killings almost winning while everyone was brawling was nice as well. And amazingly, I LOVED the ending. Zbysko hitting Christian came out of nowhere, and then Sting knocks him out. Only to have Hebner of all people shove Christian AND Sting to the outside as their on the top fighting over the belt. Jarrett climbing as the ring is just destroyed with trash looked AMAZING, and puts it all over.
So many dynamics in that Main Event. Sting-Christian finally having an encounter, and it looks like Sting DOES want the belt, which is good for the future. Jarrett doing whatever it takes, playing on his paranoia even more, especially with a new TNA guy coming in. Zbysko turning because he feels ousted by the Board of Directors. The only thing I don't like is Hebner. It would've worked perfectly with Slick Johnson, and gave him some serious momentum as a character.
And then Cornette on the stage, taking the title. Nice touch, and they've got their first cliffhangar. I'm avoiding Spoilers, which means they've effectively roped me in as a fan for the first time in a long time.
I liked this show alot.
whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
They really need to find a way to get the title on Steiner, and then book Joe to chase him. I think that could end up drawing big for them.
JJ getting the belt back is horrible. Sting should have gotten it and been murdered by Steiner shortly thereafter.
dynamite kido - June 21, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
From the spoilers, it looks as if they are going to be pushing Joe to better things sooner than expected....
whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 05:21 PM (GMT)
I'm cool with that, but there are several things that need to play out first. You gotta do something with Christian. Don't make him the next Rhino or Raven who lose the title and instantly stop mattering. A heel turn seems natural, but with JJ as the champ, what's the point?
Gotta do something with Sting. If he were to take the title from JJ, he'd need to keep it 6 months or so, and sense Joe's a face, he'd have to wait.
Then there is the whole situation with Steiner and how to resolve it.
TNA really did the wrong thing giving JJ the belt. It screwed up so many potential programs.

I totally agree with what you said about Christian. At this point, they should really turn him heel or do a tweener deal with him. Anything to keep him as one of the main focal points of the show.
I wouldn't say that Joe is a face at all. Joe comes across like a new version of Stone Cold to me. Like, fuck everyone I'm here for me type character.
If anything, i think that Steiner has proved he deserves a decent spot on the roster too. Not too many guys on TNA's roster can give a match the big fight feel that Steiner seems to. I was never big on him in the Big Poppa Pump character but he's really done a good job since coming to TNA.
I agree totally with you on give the title to JJ too. It's just a step in the wrong direction as they should've said it was vacant and it would open up EVERYTHING for them as far as feud possibilities.
whitemilesdavis - June 21, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
I really think Sting should've gotten it. He's a proven draw, and a legit main eventer for any promotion. Then it would set up the Steiner / Joe title feud that I guarantee would be the biggest thing TNA has had since Raven's destiny.
