Title: Greatest albums of all time......
Description: tounament you say?

dynamite kido - May 15, 2006 01:33 PM (GMT)
I was thinking of doing some sort of a SUPER tournament for the DWB's Greatest Albums of all time. Would you guys be up for this? I want suggestions, comments, ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 02:38 PM (GMT)
It'd have to be a hugeass tournement. There's such a large body of material that just narrowing it down to 64 (or however many) would almost need a tournement in itself. But I'd be down.

dynamite kido - May 15, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
Well, I think 64 is the number to aim for. I'm just trying to think of bracketing. Like should we group them in brackets of type of music or not? From that point on we could start nominating albums....

TheGreatWhiteChoate - May 15, 2006 03:13 PM (GMT)
64 would be reasonable. I'm not sure how we're going to determine it, because some of this is going to depend on our personal tastes instead of the sheer musical greatness of some albums, but I think we can do it.

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
Well, maybe we can have a rock oriented bracket, and a hip hop/R&B/Soul oriented bracket, so personal taste doesn't fuck everything up until the very end. But even then, I'm sure most of us are inteligent enough to at least consider the options and have good reasons for why we voted the way we did. (This is of course if we bar Scrooge)

dynamite kido - May 15, 2006 03:55 PM (GMT)
How about everyone submits 64 albums of their choosing and we work it from there? I'm sure we can get enough submissions than needed to do this and depending on those I can break them up into sections?

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 04:01 PM (GMT)
I'll give it a shot. My list will be fairly narrow, genre-wise though. There just isn't that much I've listened to. Hopfully some of you more experianced (nice way of saying older) guys will have more expansive lists, to balance mine out... I'll get on that though.

dynamite kido - May 15, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
I'm going to get started on a list of my own........

Here's Rolling Stones list to give you guys somewhere to reference for albums that I'm sure a lot of us are going to have on here.....

Rolling Stone top 500

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 04:11 PM (GMT)
See, my problem is that I've heard great thigns about a lot of albums/bands, but I haven't listened to them, so I'm not going to include them. So that's why there's no Led Zep or whatnot on my list. (I just started listing albums off the top of my head. I'm up to 24 now.)

EDIT: Yeah, out of the top twenty or so on that RS list, I've listened to two, and only liked London Calling. Maybe I shouldn't participate.

No sweat. They are YOUR choices.....

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 04:18 PM (GMT)
Are we counting things like Collection 1 and 2 by the Misfits, since they're not techncially albums, but they're the most available way to get the songs, or what?

Big F'N Swigg - May 15, 2006 04:37 PM (GMT)
Go with the actual albums, not compilations or "best of" albums

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
That's what I figured.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - May 15, 2006 04:58 PM (GMT)
Wow, I just almost threw up in my mouth. Illmatic is about 70 spots lower on that list than the Eminem Show. That's fucking terrible.

The Last Free Voice - May 15, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
I had a pretty big gripe with how low Closer by Joy Division was on that list. I didn't expect it to be anywhere near the top, but 170-something is just obscene.

dynamite kido - May 15, 2006 05:13 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that list is horrible. BUT, that's another reason why I decided to do this as opposed to us just doing our own lists.....

And Choate has sent me his list already (nice list too Choate).....

TheGreatWhiteChoate - May 15, 2006 05:17 PM (GMT)
Thanks man.

I thought I'd have trouble thinking of enough, but as it was, I left of a lot of really great albums. This should turn out to be an interesting bracket...

I would agree with that, but I would consider the Misfits the exception. They never really HAD actual albums outside of their 7' singles and whatnot. So to me, Collection I or II would be fine.

whitemilesdavis - May 15, 2006 05:53 PM (GMT)
Another Comp. that should be considered is Legend by Bob Marley. It's his definitive album, even though it's a hits package.

Yep, but I actually do think people consider that an ACTUAL Bob Marley and the Wailers album..........but I agree with you as well.

You doin a list WMD?

jamiegeist - May 15, 2006 07:24 PM (GMT)
I'm in. It'll be tough for me, as I've turned into a major Itunes head and not much of an album listener in recent history.

But I'll try my best. I'm torn on whether you should seperate by genre. One could argue (and I'm not, believe me) that the BEST rap album shouldn't make it to the Elite 8 (or whatever) over even the 5th best Rock album.

Just a thought.

I was thinking of that myself.........so I'll probably won't do it that way. Maybe doing a few mini tournaments to decide who makes it in the final 64 or something. After I have all of the lists for people that are going to do them, I'll go from there.

whitemilesdavis - May 16, 2006 12:38 PM (GMT)
I'll try to get you one by lunch today.

Question - Are my rankings gonna affect seeding, or should I just list the 64 best in no particular order?

the easiest would be 64 in no particular order. That way I'll probably either do random seedings or I'll have people chose them without them really knowing what the albums are. That way it would be the most fair.

whitemilesdavis - May 16, 2006 12:42 PM (GMT)
good.

dynamite kido - May 17, 2006 02:44 PM (GMT)
Well I've gotten a list from Choate and WMD. I have my own completed so anyone else that wants to do this send me a list by Saturday or so and we can get the ball rollin on this.

The Last Free Voice - May 17, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
I can send you a list, but I haven't been able to get to sixty-four. I just haven't listend to enough albums. I have a lot of comps and single songs I've checked out...

dynamite kido - May 17, 2006 04:31 PM (GMT)
How far did you get up to?

The Last Free Voice - May 17, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
I'm at 43 now. I'll try to think a bit harder, but I can't promise much. I don't want to start including albums I don't really dig all that much just because I like the band (See: AFI- Answer That... and The Cure- Seventeen Seconds).

dynamite kido - May 17, 2006 05:04 PM (GMT)
It's cool. Just get as many as you can then and send me the list whenever you can't get anymore.

dynamite kido - May 22, 2006 07:24 PM (GMT)
Still waiting on JG's list.........

then it's OOOOOOOON.

Too late for me to join the party? If it weren't for the flood, I would've noticed this thing way sooner.

dynamite kido - May 25, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)
No problem Rowe.......I should have this up and going in the next few days.

jamiegeist - May 25, 2006 03:25 PM (GMT)
Shit, I'll do the list this afternoon. My bad. I spaced it.

The Last Free Voice - May 30, 2006 10:03 PM (GMT)
How's this coming DK? This fourm could use some good discussion, and my last couple of attempts have bombed....

vice - July 1, 2006 07:23 PM (GMT)
Are we starting this yet? 'Cause I'd like to make my own list if there's still time.
