Title: Tournaments
Mad Dog - May 1, 2006 12:32 AM (GMT)
So I've been throwing around the idea of doing tournaments with comic characters. I thought it'd be fun and it would introduce some of the newer readers like Scrooge to some of the more obscure characters.
So what would you like to see? Spider-Man Villains, X-Men characters, Avengers members, Batman villains, G.I. Joe or DC heroes in general? Or just Marvel vs. DC?
Scrooge McSuck - May 1, 2006 12:34 AM (GMT)
Avenger Members. There's been so damn many of them, though. Or maybe G.I. Joe. YO JOE!
The Last Free Voice - May 1, 2006 12:37 AM (GMT)
I'd like DC Heros or JLA Members. Or the XMen, if you're looking for Marvel. The Avengers have just never done it for me.

By the way, the New Avengers second TPB has profiles at the end for a lot of villains. At least the hardback does.
I had no idea that there was a Scarecrow in the Marvel Universe almost identical to the one in the DC.
CREEPY

Try the New Avengers. It's actually made me believe that Bendis is a good writer

Wait... maybe the X-Men. Or Spider-Man villains.
So many characters, so little time! AHHH! (jumps out window)(
Mad Dog - May 1, 2006 12:42 AM (GMT)
The only thing with the X-Men tournament is I would ban Wolverine from it and it would include other X teams to fill out spots. But I think that one would be a good start.

The Avengers just don't do it for me as a concept. They have no unifying factor, like the X-Men or Fantastic Four do. They just seem to be a bunch of heros who get together to save the world. For some reason I don't have this problem with the JLA. Maybe it's the fact that the Avengers have SO MANY members and that the roster is changing all the time, while recently the JLA's roster has been relativly consistant. But I'll check out New Avengers. If it made you believe Bendis can write, it might be worth a shot. I've only ever liked his Daredevil stuff.
Mad Dog - May 1, 2006 12:54 AM (GMT)
The rotating roster has always been one of the things that has drawn me to the Avengers. It just makes sense to me that 75% of the heroes out there would all be on the team at some point.
And how can you hate an organization that has D-Man as a member?
The Last Free Voice - May 1, 2006 12:55 AM (GMT)
I don't hate it. I just don't have any intrest in it or any desire to read about it.
Scrooge McSuck - May 1, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)
The rotating "roster" is what I like about the Avengers, plus the fact you can see a lot of characters in 1 issue, and some time later, they change it u so it's not the same 3-4 people over and over.
For example the New Avengers I got last month featured: Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and the Sentry. I recognize America, Iron Man, and Sp-M, so that gives me a window to introduce me to new characters like Luke Cage I've never heard of, while I can see classic characters I recognize from previous Avengers (Iron Man) or from their own series period.

Another problem is that I have no attatchment to any of the characters on the roster. Even Spider-Man. I guess it's just the fact that I'm a DC Kid, but none of them do it for me.
Scrooge McSuck - May 1, 2006 01:08 AM (GMT)
That might explain it. Although I've never been high on comics as a kid, I was always more familiar with the marvel comics than DC.
Big F'N Swigg - May 1, 2006 01:11 AM (GMT)
Dude, LFV, I can't believe you don't like Spider-man.
I swear, he's like your comics alter-ego
The Last Free Voice - May 1, 2006 01:21 AM (GMT)
I'm sure I'm setting myself up for a one punch KO here, but howso? I've just never dug the "Kid fights crime, has girl problems, crushes baddies and loves his elderly aunt" thing. Just doesn't do it for me.
Though I will admit to digging Spider Man: The Animated Series.

I never thought of it that way, but it sounds like you hate Peter Parker more than his super-hero persona. Come on, you can't hate on a guy who pulls down a villains pants. That's awesome on so many levels*!
*-I'm only saying that to make it sound more important.
Big F'N Swigg - May 1, 2006 01:23 AM (GMT)
He's got wit, and he's self loathing, but not so much that you don't like him.
See, it's like a fucking mirror, I'm telling you.
The Last Free Voice - May 1, 2006 01:29 AM (GMT)
Ha. I like the comparision Swiggy.
And I guess you're right, Scrooge. But his Super Hero persona doesn't do much for me either. He spins webs and sticks to walls. Oh, and he has super strength. AND he's a genuis! It seems like they just piled shit on until he seemed less crappy.
I'm not saying I HATE Spider Man, by any means. But just like the Avengers, he doesn't appeal to me all that much.
Scrooge McSuck - May 1, 2006 01:30 AM (GMT)
I never thought Spider-Man across as a genius (other than being a book-worm dork in 'real life'), but he does have a "Spider" sense that can sense something moments before it happens. It's more like a 6th sense than being a genius.

Maybe I was just going by SM:TAS, but there he was pretty much hanging with Tony Stark on the Technology front.

He's just good with science & tech stuff. But that's part of the nerd in his character.
The Last Free Voice - May 1, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
Ah. My bad.
My brother really likes the Ultimate Spiderman stuff, but I haven't read anything after the first two TPB's. Just didn't click for me. Ditto Ultimate XMen. I prefered Morrisons New XMen or even Astonishing to it.
Big F'N Swigg - May 1, 2006 01:51 AM (GMT)
I can't say anything for Ultimate Spiderman, that's Mad Dog's books. I read Amazing & Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man.
Though I'll admit, he's one of the characters Marvel has allowed to be screwed around with WAY too much. If anyone deserves an Ultimate line, it's Spiderman
eStragand - May 1, 2006 06:54 AM (GMT)
Wait...by "tournament" do you mean "hero x vs hero y" in a sorta' quasi wrestling match?!
Um...no interest at all.
The idea behind fanboy wanking over "this hero could beat that hero because..." is one of the more laughable concepts out there. I just don't get it. This comes up EVERY week at HeroClix and it's immediately shot down ("what..this doesn't make sense! Joker shouldn't be able to take out Superman...").
The answer is "ANY character could beat any OTHER character, depending on the needs of the story".
Mad Dog - May 1, 2006 10:55 AM (GMT)
No, it's more along the lines of "I like him better so I'm voting for him." None of that so and so can beat so and so.
eStragand - May 1, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
Sorry, still not feeling the concept. I'd probably petition for Brother Voodoo or Ambush Bug, just to be a prick.
Don't get mad, LFV..but if you dug the Spider-Man animated series, yet didn't like the comic Spidey, that explains where you're coming from. The 90's FOX cartoon, right? If you're basing your impression of Spidey on that cartoon and the "Ultimate" version, I can see why you wouldn't like the character.
