Title: OAO NFL Draft Thread

Mad Dog - April 28, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
This weekend. Discuss it.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 28, 2006 06:01 PM (GMT)
I'm waiting to see if Leinart and Young go before Cutler, so I can laugh and laugh. When will teams learn that the big guys with the superior arms make better quarterbacks?

Princess Leena - April 28, 2006 06:32 PM (GMT)
Leinart just screams bust to me. The only positive he has is "he knows how to win". Weak arm, terrible accuracy (just watch any national TV game he played), and not a great runner.

Young has undoubted talent... but, he's not a QB yet. Again, watch the important moments Texas had during the season. More than half the plays were him in the shotgun, and it was a designed run play for him. That will never happen in the NFL. He's a major project... and won't be a worthy NFL starter for at least 3 years. And in today's NFL... that will kill whatever team drafts him in the Top 10.

I concur that Cutler will probably be the best. Only thing that I don't like about him is he's a bit of a risktaker.

Mad Dog - April 28, 2006 06:41 PM (GMT)
I agree Cutler is the best QB in the draft this year. I honestly see little upside to Young. Bad throwing motion, poor decision making, typical Texas player that will underachieve in the pros.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 28, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
Leinart will be a bust, I think. I'm even slightly leery of Reggie Bush...I think he'll be a great pro, but I'm not convinced he's the second coming of Barry Sanders just because he's hooked up the ESPN hype machine.

Mad Dog - April 28, 2006 07:14 PM (GMT)
The problem with Bush is that he's never really proven that he can make people miss tackles and evade defenders. He's lived entirely off of his speed in college and he won't have that in the pros.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2006 11:57 AM (GMT)
Houston's going to take Mario Williams with the first pick and ESPN is already whining about the second coming of Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Marshall Faulk, Thurmon Thomas and Bo Jackson not getting picked first.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2006 03:49 PM (GMT)
I'm surprised at the venom for that pick. They already have Dominic Davis, so why spend a pick on Bush when that's not really what you need?

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2006 03:59 PM (GMT)
2 minute warning until the draft begins. :P

Mad Dog - April 29, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
I think it was a smart choice. Bush has bust written all over him.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2006 04:14 PM (GMT)
In previous years, I've enjoyed the draft. But this year, with all the ESPN focus on it, I'm already tired of it. It just started, and I already don't care. The fucktards at ESPN can only talk about the first ten picks, when the 3rd and 4th round are where the fun really takes place.

Not to mention, this shouldn't be on ESPN, it should be EXCLUSIVELY on the NFL Network.

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2006 04:15 PM (GMT)
Pick #1: Houston - Mario Williams DE/NC State

The crowd didn't like that one.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
And the crowd shoes why the draft should be closed to the public

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
Hey, there's nothing wrong with a crowd of rednecks, drunks, and idiots chanting "Overrated" at the #1 pick of the draft. [/sarcasm]

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2006 04:22 PM (GMT)
It would be hilarious if Reggie Bush IS a bust, and Williams ends up dominating on defense

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2006 04:28 PM (GMT)
It would be awesome, considering how bad these guys are blowing Bush and blowing off Williams... and yup, Bush goes to the Saints. No surprise there.

Edit: Please get off this "rebuild the city" shit. If I lived in NO, I'd rather have my house back than a fucking over-priced football player.

Edit #2: QB Vince Young goes to the Titans.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2006 04:42 PM (GMT)
You know, the crowd wouldn't be that bad if they moved cities every year. Take it to different NFL cities. But since they're in New York, it's all loudmouth fans, mostly Jets fans. Which isn't really fair to all the kids getting booed

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2006 05:27 PM (GMT)
Bills take DONTAE WHITNER?!

*head explodes

S.T. Strickler - April 29, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
49ers get their man by taking Vernon Davis. Now hopefully he lives up to the hype.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2006 05:56 PM (GMT)
I still can't believe Cutler went last...or that Denver got him. Who drafts for these teams, untrained monkeys?

It will take the Bills YEARS to get back to where they were. They've been going downhill since they let Peerless Price go to the Falcons

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
Well, my favorite draft time tradition is unfolding: making Mel Kiper look like a dumbass.

Big F'N Swigg - April 29, 2006 06:33 PM (GMT)
a guarantee every year

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 29, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
I can't believe he likes Leinart more than Cutler. I can't believe Arizona likes Leinart more than Cutler. I can't believe Arizona listened to Kiper.

News flash: Peerless Price signed with the Bills a couple of weeks ago.

I'm anxious to see what ES thinks of Cutler going to Denver. I feel two ways about it as a Chiefs fans.

One, it scares me, cause now they could have a great QB for the next 15 years that I have to worry about.

Or two, they just burned a pick on a guy to sit on the bench while they could be addressing their needs, like pass rush, especially after losing Pryce.

So, as Nelson once said, Only Time Will Tell.

News flash: Peerless Price signed with the Bills a couple of weeks ago.

He was originally with the Bills. He and Eric Moulds were a dangerous duo with Bledsoe & Travis Henry in the backfield, and Jay Reimersma at TE.

But Buffalo let Price go to ATL, and Reimersma went to Pittsburgh, and the Bills haven't been the same since.

After ATL, Price went to Dallas, and I guess he's now back with the Bills.

jamiegeist - April 29, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
Alright, Tamba Hali for the Chiefs. Guy seems hardened by some tough life, and hits like a frickin train. I like it.

jamiegeist - April 29, 2006 07:44 PM (GMT)
I gotta say this as I watch this long ass draft: Chris Berman is SO FUCKING ANNOYING!

Seriously. He needs to die and move on. I'm tired of his fuckin schtick, and he is so goddam grating.

Everytime Tagliabue heads to the stage to announce the next pick, Berman obviously see's it about 5 seconds earlier, for TV purposes, and then he teases something, giving away the pick. Its annoying. We want to be suprised, thats why we're watching. Not to hear your stupid fat ass giving away every pick just so you can steal the spotlight and feel like you mean something to Sports still today.

I also hate Suzy Kolber. She is the ugliest women-sports-chick-thing. I want to drown her.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2006 07:48 PM (GMT)
I just want to say thank you to Dish Network for getting the NFL Network so I can watch real coverage of the draft. It's so nice not having people screaming at each other and the usual ESPN bullshit.

This draft has been terrible though. People are really reaching on some of the picks this year. A lot of guys with injury problems going early.

Scrooge McSuck - April 29, 2006 07:54 PM (GMT)
The Cubs announcers on WGN were ragging on how long it takes for the NFL Draft to finish. And when someone on ESPN said "17 hours of coverage for the NFL Draft", you can't help but agree with them.

eStragand - April 29, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
Wow..you guys are WATCHING this? All the paint must be dry in your towns.

Jay Cutler?!! Sucks to be Jake Plummer...sucks even more to be Bradlee Van Pelt. Plummer not only has to hear about the Shadow of the Elway, he now has to hear about the approaching spotlight of Jay Cutler. Sales of #16 jerseys just took a nosedive.

Barring an injury, Cutler will see limited or mop-up duty this year. 2007 will be his year to start. But for Cutler, until he starts and gets the team to 4-0, he'll hear comparisons to Brian Griese. But unlike Griese's botched situation, I don't see any controversy over Cutler being the eventual starter in 2007 (in 1999, there was a wide-spread belief that Bubby Brister was the starter.. until he was benched and Griese became the starter in late August. Completely killed the locker room and fucked the team over)

Another thing Cutler wil hear about... the last time the Donkies drafted a QB in the first round, his name was Tommy Maddox.

Mad Dog - April 29, 2006 09:17 PM (GMT)
I just wanted to add that ESPN has made me hate Reggie Bush and I hope he's an utter failure just to spite them.

Mad Dog - April 30, 2006 03:26 PM (GMT)
Check out the cons list for Vince Young:

QUOTE
Cons: As a passer, he needs extensive work in all areas to be ready to start in the NFL. During his collegiate career, his throwing mechanics were barely adequate, and with some valuable time with an NFL QB coach, he can round out his game tremendously during his rookie season. He has to be considered a developmental player. His footwork needs improvement to make quick, accurate throws, and he probably needs to sit for at least one season.

The love affair with running QBs in the NFL has to end.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 30, 2006 05:21 PM (GMT)
The Falcons have had three friggin' picks so far, but at least I've liked all of them.

But man, what the hell is Buffalo doing? They haven't made a good pick yet.

I hate the idea of the running quarterback. It's just shoddy quarterbacking. And showboating. Bastards

Mad Dog - April 30, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
I agree. My opinion has always been that they're running QBs because they don't have the decision making abilities to be a pocket QB. Randall Cunningham of course is a rare exception to that rule though.

Big F'N Swigg - April 30, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
I also think that a running QB doesn't work as well in the NFL as it does in College Football. The defensive players are better at watching the whole field.

eStragand - April 30, 2006 10:11 PM (GMT)
When you use the guy exclusively as a runner, that usually meets with disappointment. But if your QB can run, it's a good thing. It opens the offense a bit. The other guys will keep a LB in as a "spy" and your tight end can get open more easily. Frm 92 to 98, John Elway and Shannon Sharpe made their living with this.

Let the running compliment the passing. This is why I think Dan Marino was one of the most overrated QBs in history--sumbitch had all of 87 yards rushing in his CAREER. Usually the running QBs in college do so because their passing skills lack, typically in arm strength. Guys like Darian Hagan, Tommie Frazier, Corby Jones and Everyone Who's Ever QB'd at Nebraska. Vick was drafted into the NFL because his arm strength and passing mechanics showed promise. So they're not drafting guys who are exclusively runners. They want them to be mobile, but not runners (does that make sense). Until the Single Wing offense returns to the NFL, that is.
