Title: The Psychobilly Thread
Description: Where to start?
The Last Free Voice - April 27, 2006 01:50 PM (GMT)
Okay, I'm quite digging the Tiger Army stuff I've heard, and I've had people reccomend The Cramps and The Meteors to me, but no one tells me WHERE to start with them, so Swiggy and WMD, I'm lookin at you two. Help?

First thing I'll tell you is I don't like Psychobilly as a genre, so I'm not the best guide on this. The Cramps, I would not classify as Psychobilly, but as early punk influenced by a lot of other stuff. Rockabilly, Surf, psychedelic music. A good place to start with the Cramps would be Bad Music for Bad People. It's kind of a collection of singles and B-sides, and everything on it is pretty listenable. Once again, I'm not sure it will satisfy your psychobilly longings, but it is pretty good and a pretty good view of The Cramps.
As far as other stuff to listen too, Rev. Horton Heat is pretty good stuff. Daivd Childers and the Modern Don Jauns is good too. Once again, I wouldn't classify either as psychobilly, but both have elements of that, and may be worth checking out.

Awesome, thanks. I've been trying to branch out a bit, musically, from the straigh up punk/goth stuff I've been digging lately, so I appreciate the reccomendations for older stuff.

Thought of some more that worth checking out - these fit the genre of psychobilly a little more closely.
Elvis Hitler - This is kind of the definitive Psychobilly. CRAZY stuff here. Fun at times.
The Defever Brothers - (I think that's the name. I'll have to look.) I'm not sure how this comes across on tape, but live, it's something you have to see. One brother plays guitar and highhat, the other plays upright bass and kick drum. Crazy raw punk energy. If you can find this, you should definitely check it out. I'll look to see what I can find.
Tater - A newer band that is gaining following. They're pretty good.

What?! That sounds insane! Good lord... I can't fathom that. Perhaps it's my lack of coordination, but I think I'd trip and impale myself on my guitar if I tried that...

Exactly. And they do it really well. And fast.

I'm not an expert on this genre, but howabout Revered Horton Heat? I like the 1994 album "Liquor in the Front".

WMD is all over it. I was talking to a friend at work who said they'd burn me a mix cd, so hopfully some of this stuff'll be on it.

<---Must. Read. All. Of. Thread.
Okay, in a meager attempt to contribute something original: there was a band called "16 Horsepower" about 10 years ago. Local guys out of Denver/Boulder. They did some really weird stuff that would sometimes get categorized as psychobilly. But they're definitely different from Horton Heat or the Cramps.
whitemilesdavis - April 27, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
Once again, everything they do isn't purely Psychobilly, but that's such a narrow genre you'll have trouble finding something that is 100% psychobilly.

I had a crazy idea that probably couldn't work out involving Swigg, WMD and I starting a Psychobilly band using the internet to send various tracks to each other to make a whole song.
Have either of you guys listened to Tiger Army at all? I just got their Early Years EP and it's really good stuff. They did a cover of American Nightmare by Glenn Danzig...

Having not listened to much of what you reccomended, I can't say if you'll like it, but I do. I think they have some songs up on thier site still @ tigerarmy.com.

Since I been harping on you to try out new things, I'll give it a listen and let you know what I think.
whitemilesdavis - April 27, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
Much to my surprise I'm kinda digging it.

Which songs are they? I haven't been on in ages.

I'd second WMD's love for The Cramps Bad Music for Bad People.

The songs are down. I watched a video of a song called Rose of the Devil's Garden.

Goo Goo Muck!!!

Rose of the Devils Garden is okay. It's off their newest CD. It's not even one of the stronger songs on the album, IMO. I quite liked Santa Carla Twilight off that album, in particular. They're actually on Tour with MOZ in England right now.
