Title: Fucking DC
Mad Dog - April 25, 2006 03:56 PM (GMT)
2 issues into Nightwing and 2 issues into Birds of Prey and there hasn't been a single mention of what happened to the Dick/Babs engagement. So either they're pretending it didn't happen or will be making us wait until whenever they decide to mention it in 52.
The Last Free Voice - April 26, 2006 12:01 AM (GMT)
Well, isn't the idea of 1YL to leave that gap for 52 to fill? Obviously SOMETHING happened, so wouldn't it be smart to try to get the fans who want to know to buy 52, if only that one issue?
Mad Dog - April 26, 2006 02:26 AM (GMT)
Not really. If they don't tell that story until say issue 42 then you're making fans wait a long time to get the answer to something that could be completely mentioned in passing.
The Last Free Voice - April 26, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
So you'd rather have it mentioned in passing than get a solid story out of it? I mean, they're hyping Nightwing up as one of the big Saviours of the DCU, so I'm thinking it'll get a good long explanation...

That was actually almost funny.
Yeah, 52 has the potential to be a major bust, but it's still more interesting and innovative than anything Marvel has been trying to do lately.
eStragand - April 26, 2006 05:45 PM (GMT)
52 issues to tell a story is "innovative"?
Big F'N Swigg - April 26, 2006 05:48 PM (GMT)
The dudes name is "DiDildo."
That may be the most appropriate name for him

It's not just one story. Well, it's the story of the whole WORLD. Trying to tell a story of that scale, in real time (or as close to real time as Comics can get) is pretty innovative, in my book.
Mad Dog - April 26, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
I'm getting 52 but I see it being a total disaster. They can't even get monthly books out on time so I have little faith that they'll get this right. If they can't get it out in 13 months then I'm calling it a disaster on their part.
eStragand - April 26, 2006 07:34 PM (GMT)
See, I don't view it as an essential story of the whole world. Example: Batman's in Gotham and working with Jim Gordon again. That's not an innovative ongoing story that needs 100+ bucks from me. Hee hee.. next thing you'll tell me is that Superman is susceptible to kryptonite. The One Year Later books that I've picked up haven't screamed to me "there's something IMPORTANT I'm missing. Must. Spend. Money."
But I'm probably numb to this stuff. Guys tweak or shake things up all the time and it all smells "been there/done that" to me. The whole knock on 90's comics was that they would change things just to sell comics. Aquaman gets his HAND cut off!! Superman DIES! Wonder Woman is FIRED! NOw it's the same stuff, but they don't want to sell ONE comic...they want to sell at least 52 comics. In a marketing way, this is like mid-90's DC on steroids.
All we're missing is the chrome/die-cut covers. But those are now cleverly disguised as "alternate covers" (see: every issue of Infinite Crisis).

Like I said earlier, I am getting the story. But I will drop it the second I don't like it. But the idea does annoy me to a great degree. It seems like a cop out so writers can do whatever they want and when fans complain they can just say "it'll be in 52." And it also feels kind of lame considering the fact that not very much really changed.
BTW E, during the one year Batman was with Tim and Dick rebuilding their relationship.

..so what's he been doing with them for the last 12 years? They've been tight ever since Bruce came back at the end of "Prodigal" in 1994. The goofy "Wargames" mixed things up a bit, by re-assigning Robin away from Gotham... but as recently as 2003 the "Bat-Family" was pretty tight. There was a scene in "Gotham Knights", circa #45, where they all have a "company meeting" in the Batcave and Nightwing brings bagels. Nighwting lost it a bit with the whole banging Tarantula/almost married Tarantula/ Renegade/working with Deathstroke bit, but I didn't get the sense that he was cast out of the Bat Family. Guess I never saw the big chasm between 'em that DC saw.
The Last Free Voice - April 27, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
I think it was more about Batman trusting people again, after the whole OMAC thing. I don't really follow the bat books though, so I could be wrong.

Identity Crisis basically led to Batman cutting all ties to everyone.
eStragand - April 27, 2006 06:03 PM (GMT)
But the way I was reading it (y'know, in "Batman" and "Detective"), he was still buddies with Nightwing and Robin. I remember Bats and Nightwing fighting Amazo late last year.
"Bruce Wayne:Murderer" also led to Batman cutting ties..but they were re-established a few months later.
And you're absolutely right about "52" being a catch-all safety net for Shit They Haven't Gotten Around to Explainin' Yet
Mad Dog - April 27, 2006 06:14 PM (GMT)
It just seems like they could do a lot of damage if they don't reign in the writers. Take Nightwing as a prime example. No mention of the engagement and Dick is off character wise. I blame this for how terrible Jones is but OYL is being used to excuse the bad characterization.
