Title: What are you reading?
Description: April edition
Big F'N Swigg - April 24, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
I figure this would be a good way to keep a montly thread, kind of like the what are you watching threads.
I just finished V for Vendetta & Conan: The God in the Bowl TPB's.
I've also been reading:
Moon Knight #1
Swamp Thing 25 & 26
Wolverine 39 & 40
Superman 650
Transformers 3 & 4
Silver Surfer: Annihilation #1 of 4
Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman #7

Good Call. Past couple of weeks have been kind of slow, letting me catch up on some IC and 1YL tie in stuff I'd been meaning to get to. I've added Birds of Prey and Green Arrow to my reading list, and finally got Day of Vengance, which is my second faveourite of the four IC tie in mini's, outside Villians United.
This week will be the VU Special and Ion, and I get the feeling I'm forgettnig something else.
Astonishing needs to ship soon.
Mad Dog - April 24, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
I just got my sub shipment in from MyComicShop.com today. In it:
Birds of Prey #93
Nightwing #119
Robin #149
X-Men #185
Uncanny X-Men #472
New Avengers #18
Ultimate Spider-Man #93
I can't recommend Robin enough to you guys. Get issues 148 and 149. It's easily been the best OYL title so far.
I'm debating if I should just wander over to the comic book shop and pick up Checkmate and Ion when I go to get the Thing on Wednesday. I'm curious about the books but not sure if they're interesting enough for me to buy on a monthly basis.
Scrooge McSuck - April 25, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
Finished reading Uncle Scrooge #336 (Christmas Edition)... okay, throw crap at me for reading a comic intended for young children.
Mad Dog - April 25, 2006 01:38 AM (GMT)
I won't. Hell if the original Uncle Scrooge series didn't cost so much I'd probably buy them.
Scrooge McSuck - April 25, 2006 01:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah, the price is a bit.... yuck. The comic above cost $6.95! I only bought it because I had a few extra bucks to spend after buying some Graphic Novels, and wanted to see if it was worth the price. Reminds me of the Disney Adventure comics back when they frequently used DuckTales, Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck, and other Disney Characters that ruled. Nostalgia = awesome.
(busts out old Disney Adventures to read the comics)
Mad Dog - April 25, 2006 01:42 AM (GMT)
Go buy Robin #148 and #149.
Scrooge McSuck - April 25, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
NEVER!
I'm just now getting into Marvel. Tomorrow I finally get to see where the cliff-hanger of the crappy New X-Men Academy goes.
Mad Dog - April 25, 2006 01:49 AM (GMT)
Give the Ultimate books a try for Marvel. Less history to bog things down. Ultimate Spider-Man is a pretty good book.
Robin wouldn't be a big deal to get into. It's a Bat-Family book so you'd know the main players outside of Cassandra Cain who is the current Batgirl.

Here's a tip: whenever you wanna' impress comic-o-philes, mention that you read Uncle Scrooge or the Disney Ducks. If they laugh at you, you can thumb your nose at them and tell them THEY are the imbeciles.
Seriously, Uncle Scrooge is one of the most respected and appreciated comics in history. You can name drop "Carl Barks", and you'll instantly gain credit.

Comics Poseuring 101- Professor E. Stragand
But ferserious. I can't stand the Ultimate Books. Part of the appeal of comics to me is the history behind everything, even though its sometimes ignored entirely. The idea of "Let's forget everything we've ever done so we can start over and sell more books" is just a shitty concept to me.
Big F'N Swigg - April 25, 2006 02:43 AM (GMT)
I like the idea behind the Ultimate books. I'd like it better if they stopped printing every other book. Having two continuities at once is a bit difficult to explain to people who don't read comics regularly
eStragand - April 26, 2006 03:45 AM (GMT)
I've never seen the appeal of the ultimate stuff, either. "Ultimates" (Avengers) had its moments, but I like comics that are, y'know, on time.
It seems that there's only so far they can go. Ultimate Spidey...he's met Electro, Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Black Cat, etc... gee, how CREATIVE! Plus, I count roughly four Spider-Man canons in current pop culture. Movie, tv shows, ultimate comics and marvel comics. Confusing as all fuck when I try to explain this to my non-comic-reading buddy who plays HeroClix.
"What's Ultimate Spider-Man"?
"Oh, he's a different Spider-Man"
"Like the movie version?"
"No, he's comics"
"Then how's he different?"
"He's a different, updated comic version"
"So he has different powers?"
"No, they're the same"
"Does he, like, go out in space, or fight new villains?"
"No, same kind of stuff he's always done"
"What the fuck?!"
You don't walk up to your buddies and say "hey, didj'a watch football last night". "Which football? NFL Classic, NFL ReDUX, Plain NFL or NFL 2K6?"
I also feel like it's sucking away from the value of the older comics. Not monetary value-- story and significance value.

(hides Ultimate Spider-Man comic)
Mad Dog - April 26, 2006 04:11 AM (GMT)
I love Ultimate Spider-Man. It came along just as I had given up on the regular Spider-Man books forever. It gives me the Spider-Man I want.
Scrooge McSuck - April 26, 2006 12:11 PM (GMT)
New X-Men Academy X #11. Last month I commented that it was stupid crap that should be outlawed... and now this issue tops it all!
2 pages in, and it's set about 5 years in the future (but the storyline makes no sense then, since to become President, you have to be 35 years old, and the main character was in HIGH SCHOOL last issue), and it's just a steaming pile of crap.
Thank God it's a Flip Magazine, with Astonishing X-Men #11 with it to save me from the turds.
Edit: Now I know why he suddenly became president between issues #10 and 11....It was all a fucking dream. How pathetic is that, especially to stretch a "dream sequence" over the course of 2 issues?!
The Last Free Voice - April 26, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
Shadowpact was the last one I was forgetting. Am reading now.
Mad Dog - April 27, 2006 05:56 AM (GMT)
I ordered Ion, Checkmate and The Thing this week from mycomicshop.com and they'll be in next week's shipment.
I'm really digging the online sub service through them. I get a decent discount rate and it's really nice not having to run to the shop every week and knowing that I'll actually be getting the right stuff. Plus I can piggyback regular orders on my sub orders and save on shipping costs that way.
